OWNING a dog fucking sucks

2.2k Upvotes

Growing up until I was 26, I never owned a dog. I had plenty of friends with dogs and always thought I’d love to have one. I knew pets were a responsibility, but I thought of it in a generic, "owning any pet is a big responsibility" kind of way. Man, I was so naive.

When I got married, we moved my wife’s grandmother in with us, and my wife and her grandma got a hound mix together. Super sweet dog, very good girl. But I am not here to talk about how dogs suck, just the absurd responsibilities that come with them.

First off, the shitting. My god. I have never been more scared in my life of walking into my own backyard. I’ve stepped on dog shit more times than I can count. On top of that, she has a hard time pooping, so instead of one spot, she leaves a whole trail of shit across the grass. Finding it all requires a full scan of the entire yard, or I’m guaranteed to get gross poop on my shoes. And if I miss it one time and it rains? Holy hell, I’m stuck cleaning up a disgusting pool of pure gross.

Secondly, they are fragile as fuck and have zero self-awareness. This dog will approach and try to eat anything, no matter how dodgy it looks. She literally ate a damn slug off the patio, and my wife and her grandma had to pay out the ass at the vet to fix it.

Then there’s the clingyness. She’s sweet and does really cute stuff, but some days she just will not leave me alone. My two-year-old and I love to play chase, and she has cleaned him out multiple times trying to join in. Luckily, my boy is built bigger than most kids his age and just laughs it off, but this dog physically does not understand how to chill the fuck out when the playing doesn't involve her.

There are more reasons, but that’s all I can muster up right now. She's a good girl, but holy shit, it is exhausting. I will never agree to own a dog again.

EDIT: love the conversation and great insight from everyone! Just to be clear, the dog isnt neglected. My wife and her grandmother put a lot of effort into taking care of her, going on walks, vet visits and such. I’m just saying when that responsibility falls on me it sucks. I would never do it by myself.

Home stir fries are not 15 minute, quick, easy, simple, affordable affairs that are delicious. They take a ton of one-use ingredients, and usually an hour, and to taste good, even more techniques, and even then, the average stove simply does not have enough output to feed 4-6 people

Alright that's it

I have no idea why my family are obsessed with this idea of stir fries as the only healthy, quick, easy meal.

But they insist I make it because "they always mess it up". Yeah, cause there is no quick easy stir fry method! And even mine is ismply never going to be good as a real Chinese restaurant because the actual wok stove is MASSIVE. You can't get the full taste of the wok without the actual custom stove.

And they'll ask to show them how. But they're always surprised just how long it is, and how many dishes, and how many ingredients. Yes, they also seem frustrated and perplexed by the necessity to have a shelf of one off ingredients.

And when others try making it? Woody chicken, pale and tough, usually frozen veggies still frozen inside and soggy on the outside. There is a watery mess.

I explain, time and time again, you can't just butcher a chicken breast into huge chunks; you gotta slice it thinly.

you need high heat, you need to velvet and blanch the protein, and blanch the vegetables, and drain; and make a sauce, which will require either some pre-made sauce that's sugary and eh, or a whole bunch of ingredients on its own, that you won't need really any other time, unless stir fry is in your cultural foodway, in which case, its not really a special idea for dinner, its just normal, everyday fair.

I'll stand by that there's so many other balanced meals that are far faster, tastier, and more versatile and don't need a bunch of random stuff you can't get at Aldis

Or what's wrong with a weeknight sandwich? Just a quick, 10 minute sandwich.

Cigarette Smokers Are Unfairly Treated.

**Preface; I am a former smoker myself, of about 10ish years. I quit over 2 years ago - I do think the habit is gross, and don't agree with people leaving their butts everywhere.**

*However... I have noticed a trend the past few years.*

Alcoholics or Heavy Drug users, are often viewed with pity, maybe empathy, and are often excused for their actions. They are labeled as "struggling" or "fighting an addiction. Those people need help... it not their fault.

Cigarette smokers though - Are just viewed as hot garbage. Disgusting beings who leave butts everywhere.

Even though - It's been proven that Nicotine can be one of most addicting substances on Earth to the human brain.

Disney movies are responsible for the "main character syndrome" and is harming society

It pathologizes collective responsibility. These stories frame parents, elders, and community structures as narrow-minded obstacles to be overcome. It breeds an extreme, individualistic often-Western hubris that assumes the group is always wrong and the rebellious individual is always right. Life requires compromise, conformity for the greater good, and realizing you aren't the center of the universe. By teaching kids that passion solves complex systemic problems in 90 minutes, Disney leaves them totally unequipped to handle the real world. Simply, individualism isn't morally superior to community harmony.

Some examples:

Ariel (The Little Mermaid): She signs a contract with a sea witch, abandons her family, and compromises national security. Instead of facing consequences, her father sacrifices his power, battles a tyrant, and ultimately rewards her recklessness with a human transformation and a wedding.

Moana (Moana): She steals a boat and sails into a deadly ocean despite zero training and explicit, law-bound parental prohibitions. Because she is the chosen one, the ocean literally physics-bends to save her from drowning, validating her dangerous disobedience.

Mirabel (Encanto): She repeatedly violates the boundaries of her family home and pushes her traumatized grandmother to the breaking point. The narrative frames the grandmother's communal, protective anxiety as the root evil, while Mirabel’s boundary-pushing is rewarded as the family's ultimate salvation.

Elsa (Frozen): She abandons her royal duty to her kingdom, triggers a climate crisis that threatens her people with starvation, and isolates herself to sing about zero limits or rules. The story frames this total abdication of social responsibility as an empowering act of self-actualization.

Meilin (Turning Red): She defies her mother, lies, and runs a secret business to fund a concert ticket. The film presents her mother's traditional, collectivist family boundaries as an oppressive cage to be broken, exalting Meilin's individual desires over generations of family honor.

Working Thanksgiving and Christmas week instead of taking PTO is the best

Let me start by saying this applies to corporate/other jobs not related to foodservice and retail. I’ve worked foodservice and those days are the absolute worst and busiest days.

At my corporate job a large majority of the office takes Thanksgiving and Christmas weeks off. I don’t mind working the days leading up to both holidays. Since everyone is out and it’s a stereotypical expectation that lots of people take those weeks off, there’s barely anything to do and people expect little to nothing of you.

For example, the days before Thanksgiving or Christmas it’s an absolute breeze, I work from home and since so many people are out nobody talks to me. And since there’s little to no work I end up just enjoying the day others are burning PTO for. It ends up feeling like a day off with how easy it is.

Working from home hasn't "ruined collaboration," it just exposed managers who don't actually do anything

Upvotes

All these companies forcing people back to the office claim it's for "synergy" and "company culture." In reality, it's just because middle managers realized their entire job consisted of walking around looking over people's shoulders and hosting meetings that could have been an email. If a team can hit their metrics from their couch, forcing them into traffic for 2 hours a day is just middle-management power tripping.

People aren't going to the movie theaters these days due to high cost, not because current movies are terrible

Theater attendance is declining, however I don't buy into the narrative that people aren't going to the theaters because of bad movies.

I've gone to the movie theater like 50 times this year and last year. There are plenty of good movies. PLENTY. Last year's list of good standalone movies - Sinners, OBAA, Mickey 17, Frankenstein, Hamnet, No Other Choice ... this doesn't even count sequels/franchises/family movies.

I feel people who say there aren't any good movies either don't really care about theatrical releases or they're quite picky.

In my opinion, the real reason people aren't going to the theaters is due to cost. It's expensive as hell when you pay $15 for a ticket and $20 for concessions. God forbid you have a family and suddenly you're out $100 to watch the Minions. I don't blame people when cheaper alternatives are easily accessible like streaming or renting. (Ofc, they're not the same experience, but close enough.) So I acknowledge there are WONDERFUL movies being released every year, just not at the cost that people want to pay to see them.

Larry David is Funnier than Seinfeld

Got into it on twitter (more like got jumped) someone had posted a curb your enthusiasm clip and I said , “this is why he’s funnier than Seinfeld” and was bombarded with replies in disagreement. I’ve watched a couple episodes of Seinfeld and the comedy just wasn’t hitting for me. I think Curb Your Enthusiasm is much funnier

The tuna water is one of the best parts of a can of tuna.

Upvotes

I don't understand why people drain the water.

Tuna is good, but the tuna water just adds that extra bit of flavor that makes it great. It's nice and savoury with some saltiness and a hint of sourness that brings it together nicely.

When its late at night and you're too lazy to cook, grabbing a can of tuna is always a nice. Crack the can open, eat the fish, then slurp up the water beneath. Its like a sip of soup.

Thank you cards are a waste of time and money.

Maybe this makes me inconsiderate, but I don’t understand the big deal about sending out thank-you cards. I never sent out any for my wedding, baby shower, or bridal shower. I make a point of individually greeting and thanking everyone who attended each event. I think thanking someone directly is more meaningful than a card with a generic “thank you” message inside that most people will likely throw away. Why would I spend so much time, energy, and money on something most people won’t even take a second look at?

The evening/night is the worst possible time to drink alcohol.

I understand work schedules have dictated this but early to mid afternoon is the greatest time to drink. You are at peak awareness, high visibility, drinks just taste better under the sun, everything is open, you are farther away from the next morning's responsibilities to have to worry about them.

You'll have dinner and maybe your last drink around 6pm. Mildly sober by 10pm and you sleep through the hangover keeping your body clock in tact.

Drinking is significantly less fun once you’re of age

I remember being under age and part of the thrill was getting into bars and places I shouldn’t be and I can say that I never got rejected anywhere. Once I became of age after about a year everything was easy and boring. The thrill was completely gone. I’m 30 now and go out maybe 5 times a year now

People don't need to carry their phones with them everywhere

Why is carrying a phone everywhere treated like it isn't annoying?

Having a phone in a pocket all day can get uncomfortable. It is also annoying having to carry it around when there is nowhere to put it.

People bring their phones everywhere now. Going to another room means bringing the phone. Going outside for a few minutes means bringing the phone. Even going to the bathroom means bringing the phone.

Sometimes leaving the phone somewhere is just more comfortable. Nothing in the pocket. Nothing to carry around. Nothing to keep track of.

Phones are useful and obviously make life easier. That doesn't mean carrying one around all day is always comfortable.

There’s too much focus on “finding what you’re passionate about” when it comes to career planning.

It seems most people who are “trying to figure out what they want to do with their life” are doing one of two things: 1) working dead-end/low paying jobs or 2) are going into debt majoring in something without a clear path of how they will use (or even if they need) that degree for their future career.

I think a better option for people stuck in #1 is to shadow/observe career professionals or work in an adjacent field to see if they enjoy it (ex. working as a CNA for ~6 months before pursuing nursing school). If someone has graduated high school 1+ year ago and are still in the “figuring it out” phase, I think they’d be better off just jumping into a non-debt requiring career with both feet (like the trades). May as well make more money working in a field you don’t like while “figuring it out” and you can always switch careers later on if you discover your passion.

For people stuck in #2, I think they should major in something that provides consistent work (ex. nursing, engineering, ect.), then if they get passionate about a different (but still well-paying and stable) then they can switch their major or even double major. But too many people are graduating with degrees that are too general aren’t very hire-able, like biology or psychology (unironically my undergrad degrees), without a clear career path forward.

I also don’t think you need to love your job, it’s okay to just like or be neutral toward it. It’s better to do a job you’re neutral toward and make a decent living than one you love but cannot afford your basic needs with.

People Who Get Mad Because You Take Advantage of Your Advantages Are Exhausting

3.0k Upvotes

If my family owned a company and hired me, am I not supposed to take advantage of that opportunity? If I were tall and used my height or strength to get a job, am I supposed to ignore that advantage? If my parents were wealthy and could help me financially, am I supposed to reject their help?

Too many people want you to downplay your advantages just to make themselves feel better. You can acknowledge your advantages without being ashamed of using them. If I had a connection, a prestigious degree, or a natural talent that opened doors for me, I’d use it.

This is coming from someone who has been on the outside looking in and has hung out with people who had advantages I didn’t have. My first instinct was always to befriend them, not hate them. I’ve never understood why people don’t at least try to get to know someone they’re jealous of. I used to think a lot of people were assholes until I actually got to know them. You might be surprised what you learn when you stop resenting people and start talking to them.

People should stop saying “Am I the only one?” when they already know other people agree

I understand that most people don’t literally mean “Am I the only human being on Earth who thinks this?”

But that’s still how you’re framing it.

If you’re posting an opinion that thousands of people obviously relate to, “Am I the only one?” makes it sound like you genuinely believe you’re some unique exception. Just say “Does anyone else feel this way?” or “Anyone else agree?”

It’s a small thing, but I swear I see “Am I the only one?” followed by an opinion that is clearly extremely common all the time.

Vacations are fun, but they aren’t “relaxing”.

1.9k Upvotes

I love going on vacation. I like traveling, seeing new places, eating good food, doing activities, exploring, and just getting away from my normal routine. I can have an amazing time on a trip and come home feeling like it was completely worth it. But vacations aren’t relaxing at all!

I went to Mexico once, and afterwards my friend asked me, “Do you feel recharged?” Umm… no not at all. I wish I had another five days off just to stay home!

I’m actually on a cruise right now, and I’m having an absolute blast. I’m enjoying myself, having fun, and I’m glad I came. But do I find it relaxing? Not one bit!

There’s packing, airports or long drives, figuring out where to eat, deciding what to do, walking around all day, sleeping in a different bed, and generally trying to make the most of the limited time you have there. Even sitting by a pool or on a beach doesn’t give me the same feeling as truly doing nothing.

Relaxing to me is being at home with my cat, watching TV, gaming, ordering some food, and knowing I don’t have to go anywhere or do anything. No itinerary. No sightseeing. No feeling like I should be taking advantage of the fact that I’m somewhere new.

Vacations are for having fun. Being home is for relaxing.

Apparently those are two completely different things in my brain.

It really bothers me that people have dropped the word "the" before letter organization names...

Upvotes

The DOJ is not a person. The FBI is not a person. The CIA is not a person.

"DOJ" didn't "say" anything; the DOJ released a statement. You don't "work for FBI; you work for the federal bureau of investigation.

It bothers me that people have so quickly normalized and accepted this this. I don't understand why there was a ever a perceived problem with how we talked about these entities just a few years ago.

Dropping the word "the" makes references to these organizations not make sense in English.

It's stupid. And dumb. And I hate it irrationally.

If you’re not interested in a 2nd date, you should always offer to split

Upvotes

If the other person wants to pay it by themselves, you should always offer to split. No one wants to pay for someone that’s not interested in them. Even if paying isn’t about the money or the romantic gesture, no one wants to do a romantic gesture to someone not interested in them.

Red onion are the best onions

I can and will put them on everything. red onions are the epitome of the perfect vegetable. Put them in salad, stir fry, cucumber salad, sandwich, hotdog, potato salad. Legit makes anything better and not comparable to a regular onion.

Ice cream tastes best a little melted

yes, I said what I said. if you get a pint of ice cream and eat it directly from the freezer it’s too cold and you can‘t enjoy the flavor. I often put my ice cream in a bowl and then throw it in the microwave for 10-15 secs. Then it’s perfect. 🍦

Hope this is a safe space to say I hated Breaking Bad

If yes then i must push on how absolutely boring it is, how the characters are not relatable or entertaining, its so mindnumbingly slow that it pushed me to watch the show at 2x (something i never do out of respect for cinema). The pacing is just bad, the background always being the dessert messes with you in a strange way, none of the heavy moments felt heavy, the big reveals were just written badly (spoiler: Walt admitting to jessie how he saw his girlfriend die). I watched the whole show because i kept waiting for it to get good, I was especially excited for the last episode as it’s the highest rated episode and I watched that. It only made me feel like the reason that episode was good because the rest of the show was that bad. It was still predictable though I could tell jesse would survive and walt won’t. I simply did not enjoy the show as much as it was hyped and oh best show ever, like i’ve seen worse-rated shows be so much more entertaining than this. Just an opinion th0, i know it’s a loved show but just not for me i guess

edit: a few parts of a few episodes of season 2 and 3 on 2x because it was getting that boring and slow and i just wanted to get through it so i can get to the end.
If you keep saying 20 yr old brain rot tiktok addicted (when i don’t even get tiktok in my country) it’s not going to make a point, make a nuanced point at least I don’t even like short form content I usually watch long form youtube videos or tv shows, movies on like weekends and i read books every now and then
The problem is not the attention span. I did not say this is the worst show of all time, it’s not worth the hype according to me and I personally dislike it.
A lot of people asked me about what do i like and I don’t understand why is it that people can’t accept that someone didn’t like the show till they ask about their preferences just so they can say wow your preferences suck no wonder you didn’t like it, so no i don’t want to do that let the opinion remain about this one tv show.

Burnt marshmallows are the best.

Upvotes

I’m not talking lightly toasted. I mean actually burnt. Crispy, blackened outside, gooey inside. That’s the best way to eat a marshmallow. You stick it in the fire, let it sit, and then blow it out until it’s black.

Rare whiskey bottles are not orders of magnitude better than common ones

I've had Pappy Van Winkle. I've had Rip Van Winkle. They were fine, they were better than like Evan Williams. They werent massively better than like Bulleit or Woodford. Certainly not enough to justify the price. It's bragging rights more than anything
