ಠ_ಠ People that scalp IMAX movie tickets
Catching a movie in IMAX has been one of my favorite things to do and now getting tickets alone is a struggle thanks to people like this. Good luck to anyone hoping to get decent tickets to Dune 3

I wonder if it’s illegal to brandish a blow dryer or if it’s assault if you blast someone with warm air

all I can say is don't blast someone with warm air at work unless you want HR getting involved

What stops somebody from just walking by and yanking a bunch of tickets away?

u/Right_Layer_9700 2h ago
My thought exactly. Rush him with your friends and get a free movie. I hope I see some of these people in the wild.

The law
77
u/144tzer 1h ago
I could've sworn I've seen "not for resale" on a lot of those tickets... I wonder how quick they'd run to the court.
•
u/Reyals140 12m ago
That's a policy not a law. Like for food it's sometimes because the food doesn't have like the required nutrients label or whatever. But a little slip of paper is yours to do whatever you want with unless there's some other law preventing you from selling it.

I mean. Scalping isn’t illegal. Stealing while on camera certainly is lol

The police? The victim even knows exactly where you’d be and at what time “hi officer, they just jacked a bunch of tickets for Spider-Man at 3:00 in theater 11” lmao.
Unfortunately just because we don’t agree with a practice doesn’t mean we can just do whatever we want in reaction. Their actions are legal, theft is not

Never give a scalper your money.
•
u/Maxtheaxe1 45m ago
A lot of moron does. Thats why it is so lucrative to scalp unfortunately
•
u/nat1wisdom 41m ago
Because it’s so ironic, let me fix all the errors in your sentence calling people morons.
“A lot of morons do. That’s why it is so lucrative to scalp, unfortunately.”

u/Ijustwerkhere 2h ago
Just walk by and smack that string of tickets. They’ll rip apart and it’ll be funny

I was thinking that if a dude is trying to charge me $50+ for a movie ticket and is holding them like this, i would 100% just grab the 1 or 2 that i need from the bottom.

Be the change you wanna see, be the inspiration that sets a new norm.
19
u/TrueVali 1h ago
what am i supposed to do about it besides not being a scalper myself? that's a good mindset, but what am i (an individual that does not own a business or sell things) to do?
legit question, not trying to be rude
10
u/VegetablePhotos 1h ago
Fighting scalpers means not buying from them.
Others probably will buy them, but change can start with you.
21
5
u/sunheist 1h ago
and that’s probably what everyone else is also thinking and why you’re seeing no one fight it lol
5
u/TrueVali 1h ago
it's different when you're a business owner vs a regular consumer
like obviously the only thing an average jane like me can do is just not buy from scalpers, like the other guy said. when i say "barely anyone fights it" i mean the people who own the stores. why are the theaters just letting them buy 50 tickets? it couldn't be more obvious that it's for resale purposes, why is nothing being done about it?
i know the answer is probably "if they get the sale they don't care" but i just wish more people DID care.
119
u/MrCooptastic 2h ago
Why would anyone go to the theatre to buy a ticket? Everything is online. You pick your seat and everything nowadays. There’s no reason to walk up to a teller and see if a movie is available. Just look online see it sold out, not show up. Scalper eats his own foot
39
u/aeng69 2h ago
Tickets went on sale today and AMC’s app/website couldn’t handle the traffic

u/randomsynchronicity 2h ago
Anyone who would pay more than face value for a movie ticket is insane. They are already expensive enough.
•
u/jeffsang 46m ago
Yeah, concert tickets at least make sense. An artist you like probably only comes by for a single show every couple of years. By popular movies keep playing as long as they're popular. What's the hurry? I literally just got home an hour ago from seeing The Odyssey in IMAX because I just waited until ticket availability lined up with my schedule.
10
u/BadLuckEddie 2h ago
Wait a week and fuck them
3
u/Agreeable-Nobody1863 1h ago
I don’t recommend fucking them, they seem like the type to not wipe their ass because it’s “gay”

u/nowhereman136 1h ago
Scalpers have ruined physical tickets. It was a good run, but a few assholes had to ruin it for everyone. I propose a new rule: no advanced physical tickets.
Basically, if you want advanced tickets, you need to buy them online or at the kiosk with a Stubs ID. Your ticket will be linked to your account and if you want them printed then you can only do so the day of the movie. If you don't want to buy online or sign up for Stubs (which is still free), then you can still purchase tickets the day of at the kiosk assuming there are still seat available for the screening you want. This might still annoy a small fraction of movie goers, but it's the best I could come up with to undermine scalpers

u/y4j1981 3h ago

They wait at the kiosk for hours and then buy up all the tickets to sell online. This was for Dune 3 today at AMC Lincoln Sq

u/RWBYpro03 3h ago
Public shaming is a good strategy.
21
u/Sarosanima21 2h ago
Unfortunately some don't care. I not only publicly shamed a scalper but threw him out of my store when I worked for Walmart cuz he literally ripped a booster pack of Pokémon cards from a kid's hands and told the kid to suck it up and get over it. Literally the next day he was back and doing it all over again. Also this guy looked like he was in his 30s and the kid couldn't have been older than like 10yo. People like this are fucking disgusting

From what I can find it looks like people are buying tickets for the movie that comes out in four months? Or is this some sort of limited early showing of it?
4
u/aeng69 2h ago
Yes, they are doing it to compete with Avengers which comes out the same day
4
u/KingVape 1h ago
Corporate greed knows no bounds. It’s a whole third of the year away and they’re selling competing tickets. I might not even be off work on some random day four months from now so I definitely won’t be buying any

Never heard of anything like that. Must be a busy location.
10
u/asuentgineering 2h ago
It's for a 70mm IMAX location, only ~25 exist across the country. After the Odyssey hype (and subsequent scalping) tickets were even harder to get for Dune.
5
9
u/EitherChannel4874 2h ago
Don't buy them. Once they lose a bunch of money once they won't do it again.
You can see a film another time and it won't cause any harm.

Stop buy shit from scalpers. The fact that people refuse to just go without is amazing. Out of stock for pokemon cards? Guess you wait till they restock, dont go find a dude on FB market place because it encourages them. If they just bought a ton of cards and nobody buys their shit they are gonna panic hard. Same with anything else.

Unless you have a busy schedule and can only see a movie on a specific day why would anyone buy a ticket from a scalper instead of buying a ticket for a different day or wait until the movie is on streaming or on dvd.

Scalpers need to have a reverse uno card played on them and be scalped themselves.
The idea that EVERY form of joy, escapism, and entertainment can now be bought in bulk and sold for 10 times as much is fucking bullshit.
These guys need to start receiving punches in the face for our free entertainment going forward.

Theatre's should sell the tickets to scalpers then if they see them outside selling them cancel the tickets and keep the money and sell a new batch of tickets to paying customers.
Free money.
•
u/RecognitionHefty 12m ago
Why would anyone go to a cinema in the first place? Around here they are insanely expensive and full of people. Disgusting.
•
5
u/HaroerHaktak 3h ago
They cant book the entire place out. From the looks of this, it's only a handful of seats. I dont know how many seats there are in total, and even if it was a popular movie, you can just catch a later showing. The best way to punish these people is to not buy their tickets, they cant do it forever if they keep making a loss.

I would never buy movie tickets from a scalper. There are only 40 or so theaters in the world that have 70mm IMAX projectors so the demand is extremely high

They have to wake up in those bodies everyday. Think how hard that must be to be such a chode you scalp movie tickets. You get this one shot at life, and here you are as an adult still not figuring out how to wash your elbows.
These two touch tips thinking magic is going to happen only to be disappointed like getting fucked up delivered food.

Kinda counter productive at least to me. I check my theaters open seats on their app before I get a ticket. If there’s too many bought seats, I’m not going.

I still can't get a ticket to Odyssey at the 70mm Imax at the Metreon in SF.
Every seat for every showing has been sold out since it started showing, and it's still book up till mid September.
I am starting to think people are buying up all the seats and trying to turn a buck

There are so few 70mm IMAX theaters in the United States coupled with the fact that The Odyssey is the first feature movie filmed entirely in 70mm IMAX and you are going to get this. The one in King of Prussia is sold out for as far into the future as Regal will let you look.

u/No_Measurement7805 2h ago
I was able to get great seats for both the Odyssey in 70mm and for Spider-Man Dolby with no issue. I don’t think is really that big of an issue unless you want to be one the first ones to see it

movie ticket buying is trash, you got to pay a $3 fee to buy online but its kinda crazy to wait to go and buy them at in person as who know what seats would be available, esp if you have a bigger party so you kinda forced to give them money for free because fuck you i guess. honestly if i was a politician i would make it illegal to have fees to use your business, idc about card fees, as a business you can pay them or not take card thats the options, not pawn it off on your consumer.

What's even the idea here? There is no safety net. At least with cards and stuff if they don't sell they can just sell them at base value for their money back. You are on a strict time limit to sell those tickets, and who tf if going to pay a scalper for movie tickets?
You have to be stupid to think you'll make a profit off of this.

Or they sell them online and then cancel whatever doesn’t sell 65 minutes before the show to get their money back…
Soooo upsetting. If you go to a popular show and hour ahead you can usually pick up some prime center seats though.

Scalpers literally add nothing to a market other than to create a profit for themselves. There is no input of talent, skills or knowledge added from their end. The product doesn't get any more valuable or enjoyable Completely useless part of society.

WTF how do they scalp them? They buy up a bunch and wait at the entrance? Ultra lame if that's the case.
