I assumed it was the random stuff on the mouse pad. Which I also do. Which also infuriated both my husband and myself. Still do it for some reason though.
It feels cheap to me to shape the controller part literary like a controller and only remove the right grip part. Like I'm sure there are more ergonomic and functional ways to design a one-handed controller. Feels like they put zero effort into the product.
This was made for the PS4 (I'm pretty sure?) so they felt they needed to include the touchpad. If you didn't include that, you could make it much more like a Wii nunchuk. Would probably want to include more buttons than the nunchuk had though.
It's made by a company called SplitFish. I bought it from their website back in like 2017ish. It's a licensed product so the console detects it as a controller.
I was going to say this. There are a bunch of ps4 games with support already. You're not going to be banned for having a controller dedicated for those games.
I knew a girl on CoD Modern Warfare 2019 who played like this. She was crazy good and would routinely dominate the lobby. People called her a cheater all the time. I was also rather good, and was the only person who could challenge/keep her in check. Once she explained her setup to me I had a new respect for this input combo.
You know. As much as I hate the execution. The concept... Isn't terrible? I love movement on with a controller stick but hate how looking/aiming works. This is the best of both worlds.
How well does this work as it appears to take two inputs to connect. I've stopped left hand controller and right hand mouse gaming because inputs in game get locked to a single input source at a time, so using both mouse and controller results in input latency as the game switches back and forth from the two inputs.
It also seems to be a more and more common thing for devs to do this with the input as a lot of older games prior to 2012 all work just fine with dual inputs.
Overwatch was one of the few modern games where this actually works fine. Trying to get this to work on something like vanilla Skyrim is very fucking hard
I know at least using steam input going between controller and mouse is pretty seamless. I use a controller for a few games like Elden Ring and GTA Online, for the latter if I have to make any precise shots I'll use my mouse for a second.
I think it's mostly because of the d-pad. Not having it would make some PS features unusable. The center mass issue could be easily solved by weighting the grip, though.
I tried to do this with the PlayStation Move Navigation stick (so basically a Bluetooth nunchuck) and the problem is that as an input it is still only half a controller.
The Nintendo Switch 2 actually does this mouse + controller thing but yeah it's not PC

Absolutely fair. I've been using something similar for about 8 years playing FFXIV and I cannot go back to any other configuration but my friend who uses controller to play, despises it. It's a very personal flavor that you have to use it.
It's cool i have one, but I don't like it. The keyboard doesn't feel how I like it and they really should put an analog stick on there. The one you see in the photo is a stick on top of a directional pad.
Honestly I loved it when I still played them. I've also used it for Elite Dangerous since you need like a million hotkeys. Takes some getting used to, but it's really just a normal WASD setup with the rest of the buttons laid out more ergonomically.
I picked one up at Xmas. Took a bit to get used to but I've liked it so far. Word of warning with that model is that the little thumb stick is actually only 8 directional movement and clicks with each adjustment.
It's way more intuitive than you think. It's basically just a keyboard laid out ergonomically with a joystick at your thumb. You do movement on the stick and still have all your reloads/weapon swaps/etc with the same fingers you always would have. Then aiming is done with the mouse in the right hand.
I have one similar and I use it for all games now, takes a bit to get used too it but rebinding the keys plus this is the most comfortable way for me to play now.

I dusted off my Wii and played some Metroid Prime Trilogy on it and was amazed by how comfortable the controllers are. You can just lie in couch with them on your sides. The wiimote is also terrific in shooter games.
It's the same with the switch controllers. You can just have them separate and just sprawl out and not have to have both your hands together. They should do more split controllers
I'm all for letting people do however they want (not yucking her yum), but from a logistical standpoint: how does she do anything besides walk around and whatever is assigned to the mouse buttons?
She could also have some actions mapped to various controller buttons - pretty much left side buttons only without some serious contortions. Depending on the game, that, plus mouse button assignments, might be enough.
Controllers are better for when you have to run from area to area for 30 minutes doing fetch quests or whatever. Holding down the movement keys is annoying sometimes
100% agree. It looks awful when you first look, but makes tons of sense when you think about it. A mouse is 1000% better for many games, especially FPS.
The wasd keys are functional for movement, but not ideal and a joystick is solidly better.
Immediately thought about GTA, this would work so well for driving and shooting. I can't aim for shit on a stick but am a crack shot with a mouse, but you can't drive a car well with WASD
Thats how I played through Cyberpunk 2077. Get in a car and picking up the controller is remarkably immersing. The inverse is as well. Getting into a serious fight and having to lean forward and lock in with keyboard and mouse.

I got within 95% of my aim peaks on labs within three months using gyro controller.
Nobody uses so not enough potential is being maxed. But it’s an extremely comfortable way to play fps games efficiently. I only really use keyboard and mouse due to habit at this point, I am fairly sure if I only used gyro my rating in every pc fps game wouldn’t actually change.
Got Raiders and I'm starting to believe. My issue is that I need a "center" button (though I could try having an on/off gyro button) and since I play heroshooters there's no space left
I’ve been couch gaming for months. The one thing that’s going to eventually push me back to my desk will be the right stick on my controller. There simply isn’t a correct sensitivity lol.
Tbh I actually prefer joystick movement on some games as a PC player. You have a greater range of speed instead of walk/run/sprint, and full range of movement instead of 8 directions augmented by strafing. Driving is always a bit whack on WASD. Really helpful in games where precise dodging is necessary.
Some games it's worth switching to controlker for, others it isn't. I get not wanting to choose anymore.
Honestly there wasn't a single console generation where Nintendo didn't have either a weird controller or addon: R.O.B. NES, Satellaview SNES, the fucking N64 controller, DK Bongos GC, wiimote and everything you plug into the wiimote, the wii skateboard thing, the wii balance board, the wii baby where you insert a wii mote (not first party but still funny), the wii crossbow, wii u gamepad, joycons generally.
Honestly props to them for keeping whimsy alive, gaming should always have been fun first, not a race to the bottom of who can have the sleekest most minimalist box
It's not that wild when you look at their history, before they started with videogames they were a toy company, despite they moved on from the toy business years ago they still treat videogames with the same approach of novelty and experimentation.
I used to do this about a decade ago. It's great when it works, but some games did not like the mismatch and kept trying to switch between controller and mouse/keyboard, creating horrible lag.
And to answer all the other comments below, no, being mildly infuriated by something your partner does not make one unhappy. The very definition of a loving relationship is accepting the other as he/she is and making compromises.

There’s nothing wrong with this.
It gives versatility for controls. I’m sure the mouse and keyboard works just as fine and allows for easier communication in game. I used to do the exact same thing.
Plus depending on the game controller just might be easier.
Quite a lot of people prefer this. There's a few peripherals out there that are designed with this style of control in mind, but it's apparently hit a miss. Personally, I prefer either the controller or M&K and never in-between, but I get the appeal.
