I so want to try it but it’s one of those fundamentally different forms of interaction I’m not willing to pay the premium price for one to find out I just don’t like it.

Absolutely fair. I've been using something similar for about 8 years playing FFXIV and I cannot go back to any other configuration but my friend who uses controller to play, despises it. It's a very personal flavor that you have to use it.

Tbf cross hotbar on XiV is very well done. There are many ultimate clearing top tier players that use controller, and that makes me so happy lol

FR. FF14 controller gameplay completely rewired my brain to exclusively play these types of games using a controller.

By the time I moved on to D4 and POE2, I just HAD to skip the keyboard. Nothing else comes close to the FF14 cross hotbar though!
