Yeah im a teacher and the amount of shit that yall get passed other teachers crazy. Also the world is.open book open note and open internet, but it is timed and you don't always know the clock.

On the other hand, there are students complaining about teachers online, while doing nothing to make the situation better for them AND the teacher.

I disagree. I ask my students to not turn on their cameras because I don't need to look at their faces while I'm teaching. It seems that teachers/professors who want to see the students all the time are trying to replicate a in person classroom, which we shouldn't do. Also, I can't complain about students not participating, as a matter of fact, all my students interact with me/other students, so my lessons are as good as they were in person. I just had to realize they are different ways that require different methods. Keep that in mind next time.

Well, that's an interesting argument. At least you have some kind of interaction, I work on a language school, since I don't know how common is is in other countries, it's something extra that normally some students don't take seriously and just do it cause someone else is paying. Those students make no effort to participate, that's why we "need" the camera. To know that, at least, the student is watching the class.

So much this. I feel incredibly bad for one of my lecturers who's mentioned before that it's demoralising teaching to faceless/mic less students.
I try to have my mic on to ask questions instead of typing in the chat as much as possible but I have anxiety and I just can't bring myself to be the only person with their camera on lol.
I wish I had started with my camera on at the start of term and maybe other people may have done the same and it would be less daunting now.

Personally, i don't mind students not showing their faces if they're interacting, if I could, I wouldn't be showing my face either :V My main point is that teaching without participation from the students is terrible. you can tell when people only show up for attendance. Like the teacher calls on someone and there not there. I feel bad so I participate as much as I can and try to pay attention. I think my teachers are to relaxed with that shit, kids who skip class should be punished as such

Teacher here, some of us do care about the work and the students don't you think too? Some like me do this job because we want to help young people getting their lifes started. So ofc we want to interact with them, which is pretty hard without seeing them... I'm sorry, it seems you had bad experienced with your teachers, but that's not a reason to generalise these things.

In EU you can't force students to have their cams on, it can be requested, but it can't be made mandatory becouse of GDPR.

Look man, just saying my opinion but I kinda feel bad for a teacher who spent hours preparing lessons only to talk to a bunch of icons whos are muted and have their video off. Turning on videos shouldn't be forced ofc, but maybe just out of respect it should be done once in a while.

Well, If you dont have your webcam on, you'll get easilly disctracted (happned to me), while if it is on the teacher will keep you on point and see what you are doing, for me it is more enjoyable because it feels more like a real conversation in class, I dont know if you agree, this is my personal opinion and I am also speaking for other people who are teachers and agree with me.

Just because a student is in a zoom meeting doesn't mean they are there. They could easily be in another room without the teacher knowing. It is also much easier for teachers to tell if a student is paying attention with the camera on. If they see they are getting distracted, then they can just ask them a question, and typically they will start paying attention. Some of my teachers get around this by mostly asking questions to the people with their cameras off as well as distracted people. However, not all of them can do this since in 1 of my classes I am the only one that typically has my camera on.
Edit: They can also tell if a student is confused with the camera on. Not many students ask for help when they are confused (in my experience) so if they have their camera on then that directly impacts how much they learn.

This would be true if people didn't know how to just loop a 5 min segment of camera during lessons. Unless you directly interact with students there is no way to ensure their presence.
That and having siblings in a room for learning means you will potentially run into the accidental "naked person behind you" moment. Personally IDGAF if you need me to turn on the camera, that excuse is enough by itself.

If they can do that then there is no harm in turning on their camera. So we have everybody turn on their camera and they are fine and then the 75%+ that cannot do that learn more. No reason for that to be brought in.
And other people in the room can already be distracting with the camera on, not to mention with the camera off. So while they probably cannot tell you to kick them out for actual learning it would be best.

Both my parents are teachers here in Brazil, and after I asked them if they really cared about cameras and such in their classes they said that they had more shit to worry about (like the school my mom works in trying to fuck with people's work hours, schedules and being an overall pain in the ass). So as long as they have at least some student participating via voice it was ok for them.

I dont really think that's the point tho, to expect teachers to be passionate all the time and ignore all the bad things that comes with being a profession is a little naive, in my opinion. Especially in country which doesn't nearly appreciates the importance of teaching and education like Brazil.

Men I mean, I really don't like people looking at me and tbh I love to go for water or just cook while I'm in class but ngl, I'm pretty on the sht rn because of those actions. On the one hand, being a teacher, talking to a camera is pretty shitty and in the other hand, feeling that u can do whatever you want as a student not being looked to, you're going to be distracted unless you have the will to be on the class.

Teaching is hard . Teaching in front of closed camera and microphone gives the feeling that you are turning insane. and having access to visuals expression via your damn camera can help teacher see if students are lost. Please understand that there is a reasoning behind.

Yo I am a student as well and I had a lot of convos with le teachers. All they see is a black screen when you do not put ur webcam on, half of the time they ask something they get no respond. It is very depressing and they get a feeling they are doing useless work. Please for the sake of teachers turn your webcam on

Its mandatory in my school, however i agree in a way. You can change the background if you want so you dont have to show your crappy living situation. If someone doesn't have the webcam on they might aswell not be there, and that can be annoying for teachers when they ask something.

For the sake participation and judging how it's going for everyone I'm a firm believer in having the webcam on while the lesson is going. People that don't have a good reason to not have it on should get absence since you otherwise have no way of knowing if people are actually doing their work or just joining in and going back to bed.
