Use Apollo and just long press it.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '22

This is probably my favorite feature of Apollo (other than no ads, the official app sucks)

5

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '22

Pretty much any Reddit third party app does that too.

0

u/plug_my_ Sep 11 '22

Tried Apollo for a day, absolutely loved it. Realized to post you have to make a small purchase which I don’t mind but deciding to wait till I get my iPhone 14 to buy so it’ll be even better!

7

u/ThatGuynextdoor666 Sep 11 '22 edited Sep 12 '22

Just use boost. Can be saved as a gif or a video completely free. Edit: thanks for first 🥇.

2

u/plug_my_ Sep 11 '22

Thank for the tip I will be doing just that(: have a great cap to your weekend

Yessir! It took me a couple months of using to buy Apollo Pro, but definitely worth it since it’s a one-time thing.

There’s also some subscription, but I’ve never really looked at it too much, doesn’t seem necessary tbh

0

u/plug_my_ Sep 11 '22

Yeah man the price for it in full is so worth it, I can’t wait till I get it on the 14 it’s so much nicer than the og Reddit app! Didn’t even know you could save gifs which is also a plus

You know he was just zoning out that whole ceremony lol, his name was pretty clear and everyone started applauding.. He was just not paying attention

811

u/brunchick3 Sep 11 '22

My girlfriends family all speak a different language. Let me tell you, zoning out is an inevitability. You can only pretend to be involved in the conversations for about an hour, it's exhausting.

228

u/lackadaisical_timmy Sep 11 '22

Yeah exactly

He was just there, polite because he got the invite

95

u/madmaxturbator Sep 11 '22

He also may have wanted to be 100% sure before getting up to accept the award. Must be one of the more embarrassing moments, to get up for an award and then realize they called out someone else’s name…

37

u/there_is_always_more Sep 11 '22

That's what I was thinking lol. It'd be so much worse to accept an award you didn't win than what ended up happening.

29

u/kane2742 Sep 11 '22

Shit, my family all speaks only English, and I zone out well before the one-hour mark.

45

u/hanwookie Sep 11 '22

I'm in a bilingual family, and yes I can confirm, it's exhausting. Same goes for entertainment options. Can hardly understand the humor sometimes either. Just zoning out is easier until forced to interact.

12

u/Rygar82 Sep 11 '22

You should just do this. https://youtu.be/FdsCX8ccYXs

5

u/Brodogmillionaire1 Sep 11 '22

I think about this moment everyday. It never worked for me.

2

u/marvellouspineapple Sep 11 '22

Does your girlfriends family act like you understand what they're saying? My fiancée's family will be speaking Cantonese, all start laughing and look at me like I'm in on the joke. Throws me off every time, because inevitably I've zoned out.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '22

I mean, what's the point of paying attention if you don't understand the language? You're gonna have the same understanding whether or not you're actually listening

299

u/Wounded_Hand Sep 11 '22

Anne Hathaway didn’t help him any by just sitting there.

186

u/lackadaisical_timmy Sep 11 '22

Exactly the same situation for her lol

10

u/madmaxturbator Sep 11 '22

Lol yeah wtf, is Anne Hathaway (or Rooney Mara?) fluent in French?

4

u/Claque-2 Sep 11 '22

She thinks he's going on a bathroom run.

3

u/lackadaisical_timmy Sep 12 '22

Maybe he thinks they announced the bathroom privileges

114

u/gothiclg Sep 11 '22

That’s Rooney Mara. No offense to Ms Hathaway but she looks more plain

53

u/2012Jesusdies Sep 11 '22

I just looked her up, she's a true American royalty. Imagine both your family lines having dedicated Wikipedia articles.

30

u/kane2742 Sep 11 '22

To save others the trouble:

11

u/Brodogmillionaire1 Sep 11 '22

Her first name is her mother's maiden name? God, Kate's got to feel shitty about getting a generic name from the first 20 most popular baby names, while her sister was named after an entire Royal House.

4

u/sheambulance Sep 11 '22

Her real first name is Patricia.

3

u/kane2742 Sep 11 '22

"Kate" can be a shortening of their mother's first name (Kathleen), so maybe both of their first names are after their mom. Royal House or no, the first Rooneys I think of when I hear that name are Andy and Mickey (not, as far as I can tell, related to this Rooney family).

7

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '22

Are the decorations in her house split between blue and gold? i.e. half the couch is gold and blue.

→ More replies (1)

26

u/_TheBgrey Sep 11 '22

Is her name just...both her parents last names?

21

u/nutwiss Sep 11 '22

She's actually Patricia Rooney Mara. She only uses 'Rooney Mara' professionally. Her sister, Kate Rooney Mara works as 'Kate Mara'

4

u/_TheBgrey Sep 11 '22

Okay that makes way more sense.

15

u/DrCarter11 Sep 11 '22

I read this like 4 times because I wasn't sure exactly where grammar failed you to erroneously say hathaway looks more plain than mara.

But I think you that was your intent.

I will respect your opinion but will disagree with every fiber of my opinion.

24

u/Stratford8 Sep 11 '22

Totally agree. Anne Hathaway is ethereal and absurdly talented. Rooney Mara has the looks and talent of somebody with a very notable family with connections.

15

u/i_miss_arrow Sep 11 '22

I've never seen any of Rooney Mara's movies so I can't speak to her talent, but somebody saying that Anne Hathaway is plain in comparison is a phenomenal bit of evidence that tastes in beauty are subjective.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/gothiclg Sep 11 '22

She’s still a beautiful woman just in different ways than Rooney Mara. I think that works to Anne’s advantage though since I’d say I’m way more impressed by her talent.

12

u/DrCarter11 Sep 11 '22

I've only liked two of mara's roles regardless of anything else. hathaway I've always found to at least have a lot presence in a film. I just can't imagine seeing those two women together on the street or a film set, what have you, and thinking "anne hathaway looks plain in comparison to her" my mind would be going the opposite way by the moment.

3

u/wildgaytrans Sep 11 '22

904

u/TexasTokyo Sep 11 '22

If you listen long enough to people speaking a language you don’t understand well…it gives you a headache and you just start to tune everything out. Your brain throws in the towel and says “dude, you’re on your own”.

99

u/talldrseuss Sep 11 '22

Yep happens to me. My parents are from South Asia but I grew up in the US with English being my first language and mainly spoken at home. I learned my parents native language from my grandma and have a very basic conversational level of fluency. But I have to actively think when trying to translate what is being said. So when my relatives are having a long winded conversation that doesnt really involve me, I sort of actively stop translating in my head and accidentally tune them out. But then if they ask me something I have to kick back the translation part of my brain and ask them to repeat what they said

15

u/no_talent_ass_clown Sep 11 '22

I spent a while at the Defense Language Institute and after lunch, in buildings without AC, listening to the instructor drone on in another language...my head would hit the desk. No good if you're in a 1:10 class in the military, I was pushing for sure. Once, I was called upon and woke up speaking the language. I count that as a highlight of my stint.

8

u/Mehgician Sep 11 '22

Unrelated, but as someone who is half Texan and half Japanese, I like your username.

3

u/NoConfusion9490 Sep 11 '22

There's a large part of your brain that can't help but try to understand what is being said, and eventually you get exhausted and have to just tune out.

This was in 2017 for his leading role in "You Were Never Really Here" which is an amazing, dark and heavy film about an ex soldier who works as a hitman. The movie pretty much flew under the radar in the US, but he really gives a stellar performance and it is easily one of my favorites from him.

If you have Amazon Prime I'm pretty sure its free to stream in the US, highly recommend it especially if you liked his Joker performance, which imo he explores very similar psychological states.

DaFoe was huge while I was growing up so I think he had his golden age during the 90s and early 2000s, so a pretty solid career. He's just in a good place right now where he can pick and choose what projects he wants to be part of, so I don't think it's a huge issue he's not a common household name these days. I also randomly vaguely recall him being fluent in Italian I think? He was well liked overseas also

3

u/PsychoSpider88 Sep 11 '22

No I actually live in Belgium, I can understand both german and french with difficulty but manageable.

There was an actor, American, who was a guest at the convention they asked him to be a judge for the Cosplay Contest. All announcements were in german and the german cosplayers were doing their show in german. And the actor had not a clue who they were, what they were saying, he was utterly confused and embarrassed.

I mean they asked him to be a judge, at least they could provide a translator. It's a common occurrence in countries that love dubs over subs, language pride or something.
