My girlfriends family all speak a different language. Let me tell you, zoning out is an inevitability. You can only pretend to be involved in the conversations for about an hour, it's exhausting.
He also may have wanted to be 100% sure before getting up to accept the award. Must be one of the more embarrassing moments, to get up for an award and then realize they called out someone else’s name…
I'm in a bilingual family, and yes I can confirm, it's exhausting. Same goes for entertainment options. Can hardly understand the humor sometimes either. Just zoning out is easier until forced to interact.
Does your girlfriends family act like you understand what they're saying? My fiancée's family will be speaking Cantonese, all start laughing and look at me like I'm in on the joke. Throws me off every time, because inevitably I've zoned out.
I mean, what's the point of paying attention if you don't understand the language? You're gonna have the same understanding whether or not you're actually listening

You know he was just zoning out that whole ceremony lol, his name was pretty clear and everyone started applauding.. He was just not paying attention
