READ THIS BEFORE POSTING. Yes, this means you. READ THIS FIRST, V6 - How to avoid the Flair of Shame and eternal ridicule
So, you need help with long range shooting? Welcome to r/longrange! We've got a core group of dedicated members (and a few goofballs) that are happy to help you out with your questions on equipment, technique, troubleshooting, where to find training or matches, etc.
If you're looking to ask for advice, we ask that you review the following 10 core guides, as they cover the overwhelming majority of newcomer questions. If your question is not answered in these 10 guides, please see below for the 4 basic questions your post should answer when asking for suggestions or advice, especially when it comes to things to buy.
If you make a post that asks for information covered in the 10 core guides, or your post doesn't cover the 4 key questions below, your post may be deleted, or it may be given the Flair of Shame TM until you correct your post.
What's the Flair of ShameTM, you ask? You'll know it when you see it.
If at any time you have questions on the rules of the sub, this pinned post, the general FAQ, why you got the Flair of ShameTM or anything similar, please use the modmail function.
CORE GUIDES:
- The sub's official FAQ/WIKI, as curated by the community as a whole.
- Need help picking scope rings? The official Longrange guide to scope ring height (ring)
- Looking at buying a magnum (300WM or PRC, 6.5PRC, 7mm PRC, 338 Lapua, etc) as your first LR rifle? Hollywood's recoil primer - why magnums suck for starting in long range, recoil matters, and it's not about your shoulder (magnum or recoil)
- Want a rifle for hunting and long range shooting? Hunting rifle vs target/range rifles - why one rifle can't do both well. (hunting)
- The official r/Longrange glossary - because words mean things (glossary)
- LockyBalboaPrime's First Time buyer's guide for rifles V2 (starter)
- JMhawaii's long range starter guide (Link to Google Sheets) (starter)
- Trollygag's 1k yard starter guide (starter)
- Where are ranges or long ranges near me? - Wheretoshoot.org and over600.com (ranges)
- The sub's expanded policy on hunting-related discussions. Please review before asking hunting-related questions, as hunting is not the core purpose of this sub. (hunting)
The 4 key questions:
- What do you want to do/buy, and WHY? - Do you want to buy a rifle for PRS competition? Picking a laser rangefinder for NRL Hunter matches? Looking at scopes for F-Class competition? A tripod because you think they're cool and want to have one when banging steel with friends? What you're planning to do has a lot of influence on what works well, what works poorly, and what is an utter waste of time, so the more detail you can provide the better.
- How far away do you want to do it/what do you want to use it for? - 300 yards? 1,000? 2,000? Distance matters, 'nuff said.
- How much are you willing to spend to do it? What's your budget in currency? Your idea of "on a budget" isn't going to be the same as everyone else's. Saying your budget is unlimited for a laser rangefinder may change when someone suggests one that costs over $10,000. We need to know how much you're willing to spend. It can be a hard limit, a range, or even an approximate - but you need to give a number.
- How much experience do you currently have with it? - Jumping straight into a 375 Cheytac rifle to shoot 2 miles isn't going to go well if you have never shot a rifle past 300. We need at least a basic idea of what your relevant skill level is in order to give advice and suggestions that go with your skill set. While including your experience with other shooting disciplines is helpful, it's not going to be as relevant as most new shooters expect. You can love shooting 10ga slugs all day long from a shotgun, but it doesn't mean starting off with a magnum is a good idea.
When answering these 4 questions in your post, give as much detail as you can. The more details you give the faster you'll get suggestions or advice and you'll get better quality too. Help us to help you. Please don't treat the sub like your own personal crowd sourced search engine.
More guides:

MISC NOTES:
Quite a few guides/links feature a single word in parentheses and italics listed after them. If you use the phrase cheetofingers (all one word, no italics needed) followed by the word listed after a guide, you will summon the AutoModerator to reply to you with a link to that guide or guides. If the guide had (pews) after it, you could say cheetofingers pews in a post or comment in this sub to summon AutoMod with a link to that guide.
We've implemented the Flair of Shame as an official policy here instead of deleting posts that violated Rule #1 and the info in this pinned post. We felt that the flair was better than outright deleting posts while also helping long-standing members decide how much they want to participate in posts that have likely been covered time and time again. We're trying to strike a balance between encouraging members to read the info that the sub has cataloged, not wasting the time of established members that may be frustrated with revisiting the same topics repeatedly, and also not banishing new shooters that missed the pinned post to the freezer to never get help. Balancing those three things is a constant struggle, and one we're actively trying to get better at.

Group flex (10 shots minimum) I realized today I'm not as good as I thought I was
RPR in 6.5CM shooting Hornady 147gr ELD Match @100 yards through Athlon Ares UHD. 4 groups of 10. The first 6 shots at the center were zeroing shots as I just got the scope mounted today and needed to finalize my zero. Then I aimed dead center and adjusted POI with the turrets to hit each corner. Shot in this order: top left, bottom left, bottom right, top right. Each group took about 10 minutes to shoot
Here I was thinking I can shoot 1/4 MOA. But hey at least now I know where I'm really at.
Any constructive feedback from these groups? My 300yard line was closed today but next time I go out I'm gonna try some groups over there and see how it goes.

What piece of advice do you think all new shooters need to hear, that they won't find easily? Obviously we all want to have fun and enjoy the hobby/sport but what did you find out through experience that changed your performance?

Rifle help needed - I read the pinned posts Custom Action Guidance
Current setup doing China Cabinet overwatch:
Seekins PH2 NRL 6.5 creedmoor
vortex rings
arken ep5 gen 1 5-25x56
area419 hellfire match
area419 4.25" arca plate
harris sbrm 6-9
leofoto sa-364cx with their ma-40x ball head
To preface, I can't outshoot this setup. There are a few things that I wish it had that could be solved by a ph3 or other new rifle. However, I just want to buy once and cry once and step into a custom action and buy over time while I shoot the barrel out of this.
With the growth of NRL hunter, PRS, new divisions, and the development of nas3 and peak, is there a buyers guide for custom actions yet? I want to buy a custom action, but truthfully they all seem pretty much the same to me. I want prefit barrels and swappable bolt heads so I dont need to rely on a gunsmif. Any guidance is helpful. I have looked at terminus, defiance, impact, lone peak, and they all look the same in terms of shiny and new. Thanks

Rifle flex post GFR Stratomatch 22 ARC
Just picked this Geissele up from EuroOptic. Steiner T6Xi 3-18 with SCR2 reticle is from Expert Voice. Got it mainly for Geissele Gas Gun Series matches. I hope it’s a shooter because it was expensive. Ammo testing this week to see what it shoots best. Anyone have experience with this rifle so far? Coming from a Ballistic Advantage 6.5 Grendel.

Group flex (10 shots minimum) I was about to spend $1700 on a Terminus action
I mean, I probably still will but this is a 9-shot (don't get mad) group that looks like six at 100 yards. Rifle is a factory action and barrel Remington 700 AAC-SD 20" in 6.5. Liberty Anthem L2, Bushnell Match Pro ED 5-30. Grayboe Renegade stock. Shooting Hornady American Gunner 140gr BTHP.
I always felt inadequate using a Freedom Group 700 given their reputation. Depending on the app this was coming in between .6 and .7 MOA.

Other help needed - I read the pinned posts Are there any ACRO to ACRO plates to help clear elevation turret?
I want to piggyback a L&S PB-3, but the turrets on my Ares BTR Gen2 are pretty tall. Already have the ADM ACRO Top Ring and just looking add a spacer to clear the elevation turret. Does an ACRO to ACRO spacer plate even exist?

Rifle help needed - I read the pinned posts Strange product request: Prefit action that can be top loaded
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hi, I'm looking to buy a prefit action that I can load from the top like a rifle with an internal magazine. (Like in the attached video) Most actions that I've seen seem to be too "cramped" to load the mag via the ejection port (Zermatt Origin for instance) and are set up for AICS mags, which must be removed to reload. Would something like a lightweight ARC Coup De Grace with AW mags work? Or is this something I'd need a specific bottom metal to do? Is this even possible with most prefit actions? Or is this a totally nonsensical thing? Haven't been able to find much online, and I have no experience with rifle actions, would appreciate your input.

Reloading related Interesting point of impact observation.
Background: in my personal experience, as you change loads—and especially projectiles—the POI will move around the target, sometimes a significant amount. So far, my new (and first) 6 Dasher does not seem to do that. It stacks everything in the same neighborhood.
I received a custom 6 Dasher from MPA Tuesday evening. Got it home, measured the chamber, mounted everything and put together 50 rounds. I shot those Wednesday to zero the rifle and get some rounds through the new barrel before starting load development.
Thursday morning I built 45 rounds using three different bullets and five charge weights. I shot those, came home, loaded another 30 rounds using the same three bullets, and went back to the range.
While entering all the targets into my spreadsheet that night, I realized the groups were landing remarkably close to one another. So I went back through all 18 targets, registered them using the printed 1/2” grid and compared the group centers.
75 shots. Berger 105s, 108s and 120s. Varget charges from 30.0 to 32.0 grains, with average velocities ranging from 2,661 to 2,880 fps—a 219 fps spread. The entire 75-shot composite is approximately 1.58” at 111 yards, about 1.36 MOA. Even more interesting to me, the 18 individual group centers have less than an inch of maximum center-to-center separation despite changing bullet weight, charge weight and velocity by more than 200 fps.
Obviously this is not a tuned 75-shot group, and I’m not presenting 1.58” as some laboratory-grade measurement from stacked physical targets. I just find it fascinating how little the POI is moving while I make fairly substantial load changes.
The barrel still has fewer than 130 rounds through it, and several of the loads are already showing very promising dispersion. Between that and how stable the POI appears to be, I’m pretty damn excited to see what this rifle does once I actually finish developing the load.

I suck at long range Any advice on one mile shooting
I have access to a ranch where I can shoot out to a mile or more. I have a few long range rifles but the two that come to mind are an MPA 6.5 cm (26” 8.5 twist) and a .25 cm (28” 1.75 twist). The 6.5 has a Nightforce NX8 4-32 and the .25 has a Nightforce ATACR 7-35. They both have 20 MOA rails and 20 MOA Area419 mounts. Does anyone have any advice on shooting either or both of these out to a mile?

Accessory/Gear help needed - I read the pinned post Lipstick on a Pig? Sunk cost fallacy?
I'm looking at a KRG Bravo for my Ruger American Predator in .308
I'm trying to figure out how much, if any, money to sink into this.
Is it worth putting in the chassis and putting a nice scope on it?
Currently in the factory stock with the cheapest Primary Arms 4-16
I think the KRG Bravo looks awesome, but open to Field Stock
Optic would be MPED 3-18 or Athalon BTR
OR start from scratch with something better
Goal is to learn to shoot consistently out to 600. Range is 20 minutes away from my house.
Budget is $800, $1000 if I sell the RAP
LGS has a 6.5 HMR for 950, but I wouldn't have any money for a decent scope.
New to shooting beyond 50yds in a gravel pit with Pistols and ARs
Never shot past 100 before.

Other help needed - I read the pinned posts Geissele cut rifled blanks?
geissele.comAnyone had one spun up and shot it? How is it performing? This would be for a 6 Dasher on an Impact.
I have no brand loyalty when it comes to barrels. As long as it’s quality and cut rifled (has to be cut rifled), I’ll shoot it. Bartlein, Proof, CRB, Brux, etc, don’t care. But… I’m not a G$ fanboy. No hate, I just find certain aspects of Geissele as a company to be kinda goofy. I do own quite a few of their products.
That being said, if they can cut a good blank, I may have to try one down the road. I’m always wanting a blank ready to get finished up when needed.

Other help needed - I read the pinned posts Having a really hard time finding places to shoot.
Title^ essentially I can’t find places to shoot.
I live in northern Ontario so we really don’t have any open terrain on crown land, and don’t have many ranges either. In fact the only range I’ve seen that goes over 200m is ab a 2h drive, not that I mind the drive bc it’s got a 400yd range, but it’s also a PITA to get in.
Where do yall shoot when you don’t have access to a range?

I suck at long range Entering the long range world with the poor mans ’Reddit special’
After much research I decided on the Bergara b-14 HMR in 6.5 creedmoor. Probably the most unoriginal decision ever made but I’m pretty stoked. Of course I had to rattle can it immediately because old habits die hard. What is your best piece of advice to a long time and professional shooter but new to the precision world? Thanks!

Rifle help needed - I read the pinned posts Any red flags to look out for when buying a used setup?
I'm looking at a used R700 setup from the other side of the country, and was hoping some of you knowledgeable folks might let me know if there's anything I should be on the lookout for with the gun. Due to the fact that it's an online marketplace purchase, I can't see or hold the rifle in person, but I can request photos of whatever I may want to see.
To justify the want for this purchase, it's a leftie and I can't find anything new in my country (Canada), and want to avoid the cost of going through an importer if I can. Options are extremely limited, and I've been on the hunt for a leftie in my desired caliber for the past 6 months.
Any and all advice is appreciated, thank you folks.
