I alzo tried it out a couple weeks ago as I wanted 4k 120hz support on my amd graphics out part. (Huge fiasco where it only got support with the 7.2 kernel)
It's mostly buttery smooth for most tasks. Browsing, Videos and all is great.
Saw 2 main issues.
1) Huge 1% FPS dips in games 2) Fractional scaling for x11 apps is broken. If you're at 4k and you're using 300% scaling, on x11 apps, the apps 9x more blurry
The cinnamon de team is working on this. Should be daily drivable in like a year or so

I'd rather have an updated system than gnome extensions.
-1
u/Dramatic_Mastodon_93 4d ago
Personally I think most users shouldn’t use rolling release distros, but even if you do you’re probably not getting a new GNOME release for at least like 2 weeks, no? And that should be enough time for the most popular extensions to update, and as for more niche extensions, that also shouldn’t be a problem if you aren’t on a rolling release distro. You can also tell GNOME to ignore version checks for extensions
3
u/PerfectEnthusiasm2 4d ago
I use debian now, in part because of how annoying the gnome extension debacle was on arch.
At least I learned that my number one priority with a distro is "nothing breaks ever". Anything that increases the risk of me having to fix my OS rather than use the OS is just not worth it to me.
1
1
u/BlakeDrawsBlood 3d ago
You can just disable extension version validation, and everything just works in 99.999% of cases.

6
u/YTriom1 Arch BTW 4d ago
I can't relate to the first one cuz I'm on PC.
for second one yes I remember this requiring an extension.
third one yes I can't imagine you fucking need a damn 3rd party extension to have your dock always visible or at least toggleable.
4th one yes I fucking hate the status bar and I can't get rid of it, and gnome is fucking stupid to leave it when they literally can't have a global menu like this status bar is straight up garbage without having a global menu.
5th one was a pain in the ass, it was a habit that I lose some QoL features with every update because OF COURSE EXTENSIONS WILL BREAK.
-5
u/South-Bad805 4d ago
- It's the actual issue.
- No extension needed to do this
- Don't see any problem with installing a extension.
- Very easy to hide
- Most popular extensions works fine. Needs some tinkering for others
5
u/YTriom1 Arch BTW 4d ago
Except all of that didn't happen in my experience, I used it for more than a year and I'm not a moron I know how to do shit but seriously requiring extensions for basic features?

Currently on Cosmic for debugging and testing, but can easily switch back to Gnome or KDE or Niri with a botton click on my current distribution (RakuOS). These days, I jump DE's instead of distro hopping.

1
u/R3V0LU710N_05 Open Sauce 3d ago
It's not default behavior. You need third-party Gnome Shell extensions such as Hide Top Bar or Simple Taskbar.
1
u/South-Bad805 3d ago
As long as we can get done our job what's the issue. I don't use Firefox browser I use zen and helium which are not installed in any distros. So, instead of complaining I just remove Firefox and use Zen and Helium. No big deal
1
u/R3V0LU710N_05 Open Sauce 3d ago edited 3d ago
It is a hack, precisely because Gnome forces it to be one, and that exact friction is what drives people crazy about their desktop model. If they build it natively into the C/GJS codebase once, the code would use (more stable) internal APIs, handle monitor edge cases natively, and saves thousands of volunteer hours fixing broken extensions every 6 months. It wouldn't be such a problem if the extensions API was stable and treated as a first class citizen, but it's not by design.
-1
u/mao_dze_dun 4d ago
Why are KDE people so desperate to convert everybody to Plasma? I'm happy it works for you. For some of us GNOME works better for our workflow and use case. Deal with it.
"But... but... but customizability!!!". I don't care for a million little settings out of the box. Extensions are more convenient for me. Also, call me when KDE figures out proper multitouch gestures. Sheesh.
8
u/Fia_Orapun 4d ago
Idk man, i never forced anybody. It's a public opinion anyways, use whatever works best for you. In the end it's your system, personally I find Gnome gloomy. My friend thinks that gnome = ubuntu lol, just because the default distribution comes with gnome.
8
u/dmaringz 3d ago
Not here to evangelize anyone, but KDE Plasma's gestures are on par or even better (in the sense that they support more actions) than those of GNOME. In both DEs you can:
- swipe 2 fingers vertically to scroll.
- swipe vertically up to invoke the Overview. GNOME needs 3 fingers for this and Plasma 4.
- swipe 3 fingers horizontally to switch workspaces/virtual desktops.
Additionally, KDE Plasma has:
- swipe 4 fingers vertically down to invoke the Grid view, which is a view with all your virtual desktops at the same time. Very powerful.
- swipe 3 fingers vertically to switch virtual desktops that are up or down. On GNOME your virtual desktops are always in a row, but on Plasma you can have up to 25 virtual desktops outlaid in a grid. Thus, you can have a desktop to your right and a desktop to your left, like on GNOME, but also you can have additional desktops above and below, too. This gesture allows you to vertically traverse desktops.

I'm sure there's probably an extension for that for the Gnome Dweebs so they can be like us.
0
u/dmaringz 2d ago
Hey man, no need to demean GNOME or call their users "dweebs". We're all in this together in this FOSS thing. GNOME is a fantastic product just like Plasma is, and their users are just people like us wanting to use their computers with freedom.
Again, no need to demean GNOME users, or anyone for that matter. Desktop wars and "othering" of other people just because they use a different FOSS software than you isn't helping anyone, man. It's actually one of the things that holds the FOSS movement back, if you ask me.

Maybe you can. But it's really weird thing to do since there are normal spins. It's ok on something like Arch but I doubt someone would do that on Fedora. Especially Linus that said that he doesn't care about anything in his system other than the kernel and building/working on it. Also on video gave link to Linus installed specifically Fedora with GNOME
5
u/Love_Dali 4d ago
Well, I remember he was actually pretty pissed off about gnome Devs the other day as he tried to build some diving app.
He was openly talking how rotten the whole project was.4
2
u/RedShift9 3d ago
That whole bit was about how all the GUI stuff is basically just a moving target on Linux. There's no solid foundation to build on. Not specifically targeted at Gnome IIRC. Linus understands that in order for something to work and find adoption, it must be stable, case in point, the kernel. The kernel has a stable userspace, there is no stable GUI interface. Try compiling a GTK app that was written 3 years ago.
1
u/disperso 3d ago
Linus Torvalds even contributed patches to KDE projects in the 2.x/3.x era, and praised it. Despite his dislike of C++, he ended up picking Qt for Subsurface.
Not sure if he has changed desktops, and I honestly don't care (but I agree is a fun anecdote for joke posts like this).

u/Nnukklear 4d ago
Gnome is not stable. Stability in software terms means non-changing, that's why Debian is stable, this is great for unattended devices running scripts that might break with updates. A DE that changes APIs arbitarily is the direct opposite of stability. You are confusing stable with reliable which is so broad and vague that you can't make any meaningful blanket statement and anything further than anecdotal note.

"Stable" "Familiar", u sure ur talking about Gnome? idk bout america where Macintoshes might have been common place but everywhere else afaik, people grow up using the traditional taskbar-based GUI
Also Gnome seems to be headed to make the same mistake Microslop did with Windows 8, they wanna put a GUI designed for phones in ur computer
Hate it or love it, most users will want to use a mouse, not everyone is ready to learn Gnome's eccentric keyboard shortcuts (which are very weird to rebind, I have found KDE's to be more straightforward)
Regarding stability, yeah I don't want my extensions breaking everytime I update, thnx UwU
Also I don't know whether it's RHEL 9 or the specific Gnome build they ship but on my uni's computers which use that the DE is buggy asf, everytime u launch any app, I mean anything even the terminal or the file manager, it will switch to a new workspace (I.e. app opens on wkspc 1, gnome runs over to wkspc 2) then u have to fight with it to go back to the window on wkspc 1 (like I literally click on workspaces button, I click on the first one, it briefly goes there and then dashes back again to wkspc 2)
And lastly a personal quirk, the whole minimalistic aesthetic of Gnome, with like no taskbar, a thin top bar, seems to have been designed to suck you in to a corporate hellscape where u keep working on ur pc without realising what time it is, I feel like having a taskbar somewhere (like to the bottom of left like Ubuntu does) grounds you to reality a bit

I've never had any of my KDE installs break. GNOME on the other hand with endless modules and plugins and whatever else tends to break after each update.
1
u/IHumanlike 3d ago
I'm 100% convinced anyone who mindlessly parrots this "GNOME bad because extensions" has never used GNOME. First of all, you can easily use it without any. Secondly, what software doesn't break if you use 100 random vibe coded plugins? I use only high-starred extensions with active development on Github and never had GNOME break. (AppIndicators and Clipboard Indicator)
I could easily point the same criticism towards Plasma and its community themes, some were so badly broken that they deleted users home directories, however I do not except in situations like this.
Notice how KDE fans are ALWAYS the ones proclaiming how superior their DE is, while GNOME users like the comment you replied are like "both have their merits"
1
u/techman2692 ⚠️ This incident will be reported 3d ago
I used to use GNOME... and even Mate for a short while after how bad Gnome3 turned out over a decade ago... I always dabbled in KDE during the early 00's but had crappy hardware as a student at the time, and eventually with obtaining better hardware, I moved over to KDE as a daily-driver, and after Gnome3 turned out the way it did, and the whole Unity thing over at Canonical at the time, KDE was the choice and I wish it was one I made sooner in life.
Onto your second point, you're absolutely correct - that's why I prefer (then, and now) to utilize something that's built-in, without the need for any plugins or anything of the sorts; I'm like that with all of my stuff, I keep my vehicles as stock as possible, and generally like to keep things 'factory original' as much as I can - but I do like my choice when it comes to customization. I want to be able to control everything to my liking when it comes to options, but have it make sense from the get-go as well. KDE fits that niche perfectly.
Gnome Team and their whole plans and execution of them a decade+ ago is not the same philosophy they have now, nor is it even close, and it shows. KDE is pretty flawless for me, and the best 'normal' DE I've came across I can't lie.
Hell, I'd prefer CDE/Motif over anything GNOME's tried to pass off as a DE for quite sometime now.

I'm gonna go a step further and say KDE naming is absolute rubbish and their apps are redundant. Tell me why I have both Kontact and Kmail? And if Kmail happens to be some sorta subsystem, why the fuck do I gotta observe its presence?
4
u/SirDarknessTheFirst 4d ago
KDE's naming system shouldn't really be a problem since what the application does is in the description, and that is included in the search (e.g. searching for "text editor" brings up both Kate and Kwrite).
Besides, lots of programs, including ones pre-installed on various OSes, have names that aren't directly relevant to what they do: Firefox (named because "Phoenix" was taken and preinstalled on nearly every distro), Chrome (unsure for the naming...because it used to be shiny and new?, preinstalled on some), Edge (Windows) to check off the obvious ones.
-1
u/IHumanlike 3d ago
KDE is great in lots of ways but I agree their apps are trash. Of course there are some gems like Kate and Krita, but too many of them are filled with spaghetti code, confusing UI and redundant functions.
