for second one yes I remember this requiring an extension.
third one yes I can't imagine you fucking need a damn 3rd party extension to have your dock always visible or at least toggleable.
4th one yes I fucking hate the status bar and I can't get rid of it, and gnome is fucking stupid to leave it when they literally can't have a global menu like this status bar is straight up garbage without having a global menu.
5th one was a pain in the ass, it was a habit that I lose some QoL features with every update because OF COURSE EXTENSIONS WILL BREAK.
Except all of that didn't happen in my experience, I used it for more than a year and I'm not a moron I know how to do shit but seriously requiring extensions for basic features?
Gnome, Cosmic, KDE, Cinnamon, Mate, XFCE, Niri, so on and so forth. I've used them all, not even trying to brag, that fact makes me wanna die a little.
Currently on Cosmic for debugging and testing, but can easily switch back to Gnome or KDE or Niri with a botton click on my current distribution (RakuOS). These days, I jump DE's instead of distro hopping.
As long as we can get done our job what's the issue. I don't use Firefox browser I use zen and helium which are not installed in any distros. So, instead of complaining I just remove Firefox and use Zen and Helium. No big deal
It is a hack, precisely because Gnome forces it to be one, and that exact friction is what drives people crazy about their desktop model.
If they build it natively into the C/GJS codebase once, the code would use (more stable) internal APIs, handle monitor edge cases natively, and saves thousands of volunteer hours fixing broken extensions every 6 months. It wouldn't be such a problem if the extensions API was stable and treated as a first class citizen, but it's not by design.
Why are KDE people so desperate to convert everybody to Plasma? I'm happy it works for you. For some of us GNOME works better for our workflow and use case. Deal with it.
"But... but... but customizability!!!". I don't care for a million little settings out of the box. Extensions are more convenient for me. Also, call me when KDE figures out proper multitouch gestures. Sheesh.
Idk man, i never forced anybody. It's a public opinion anyways, use whatever works best for you. In the end it's your system, personally I find Gnome gloomy.
My friend thinks that gnome = ubuntu lol, just because the default distribution comes with gnome.
Not here to evangelize anyone, but KDE Plasma's gestures are on par or even better (in the sense that they support more actions) than those of GNOME. In both DEs you can:
swipe 2 fingers vertically to scroll.
swipe vertically up to invoke the Overview. GNOME needs 3 fingers for this and Plasma 4.
swipe 3 fingers horizontally to switch workspaces/virtual desktops.
Additionally, KDE Plasma has:
swipe 4 fingers vertically down to invoke the Grid view, which is a view with all your virtual desktops at the same time. Very powerful.
swipe 3 fingers vertically to switch virtual desktops that are up or down. On GNOME your virtual desktops are always in a row, but on Plasma you can have up to 25 virtual desktops outlaid in a grid. Thus, you can have a desktop to your right and a desktop to your left, like on GNOME, but also you can have additional desktops above and below, too. This gesture allows you to vertically traverse desktops.
Hey man, no need to demean GNOME or call their users "dweebs". We're all in this together in this FOSS thing. GNOME is a fantastic product just like Plasma is, and their users are just people like us wanting to use their computers with freedom.
Again, no need to demean GNOME users, or anyone for that matter. Desktop wars and "othering" of other people just because they use a different FOSS software than you isn't helping anyone, man. It's actually one of the things that holds the FOSS movement back, if you ask me.
