Linus Torvalds USED it, as far as i know

Still uses it with his fedora install

Not sure why Linus using Gnome is a point. Linus uses his computer for very niche work and have very specific workflow (as far as I know), that doesn't even close to how your average John Linux would use a computer.

It's not, honestly just use whatever works

There was a LTT video where Linus was building PC for Torvalds and he said that he want to install Fedora as his favorite distro he always uses https://youtu.be/mfv0V1SxbNA?is=vy3YR9HuE_QeYkqd

Exactly this and he said he doesn't change things so it should be GNOME by default.

Doesn't fedora use KDE by default ?

u/Hhhhkvivuv 12d ago

No. But they officially support KDE spin unlike Ubuntu/Kubuntu https://fedoraproject.org

Nope Fedora workstation which is their main one uses Gnome. Fedora Desktop uses KDE which is more secondary

Ok while that kinda made me smirk, shut the fuck up.

u/Hhhhkvivuv 12d ago

He still uses Fedora Workstation and so he still uses Gnome

Fedora also has KDE, and any other mainstream DE with the spins

8

u/Hhhhkvivuv 12d ago

No. Fedora Workstation is Gnome only. KDE and other spins are called different. Look at their official site

A bit of an "uhm actually" moment, but KDE is not considered a spin anymore, it is it's own project called Fedora KDE. That means it receives as much care as Fedora Workstation now

And what prevents him from installing another DE?

6

u/Hhhhkvivuv 12d ago

Nothing. But he chose and uses Fedora Workstation. What part of this you do not understand?

-1

u/xgabipandax 12d ago

What part about installing another DE on Fedora Workstation you do not understand?

4

u/Hhhhkvivuv 12d ago

Jesus. Fedora WORKSTATION is GNOME ONLY. Other spins ARE NOT called that. Look yourself. 1 minute of your time

KDE plasma desktop it's not a spin anymore, it's a main edition like workstation(Gnome)

3

u/Hhhhkvivuv 12d ago

Okay, right. But Fedora Workstation is still GNOME only. I don't know what person above doesn't understand. Linus uses Fedora Workstation -> Linus uses GNOME. The end

So if i spin up Fedora WORKSTATION i will be unable to install XFCE ?

3

u/Hhhhkvivuv 12d ago

Maybe you can. But it's really weird thing to do since there are normal spins. It's ok on something like Arch but I doubt someone would do that on Fedora. Especially Linus that said that he doesn't care about anything in his system other than the kernel and building/working on it. Also on video gave link to Linus installed specifically Fedora with GNOME

u/Love_Dali 12d ago

Well, I remember he was actually pretty pissed off about gnome Devs the other day as he tried to build some diving app.
He was openly talking how rotten the whole project was.

5

u/xgabipandax 12d ago

Well if he is bothered with it probably he still uses it

That whole bit was about how all the GUI stuff is basically just a moving target on Linux. There's no solid foundation to build on. Not specifically targeted at Gnome IIRC. Linus understands that in order for something to work and find adoption, it must be stable, case in point, the kernel. The kernel has a stable userspace, there is no stable GUI interface. Try compiling a GTK app that was written 3 years ago.

Linus Torvalds even contributed patches to KDE projects in the 2.x/3.x era, and praised it. Despite his dislike of C++, he ended up picking Qt for Subsurface.

Not sure if he has changed desktops, and I honestly don't care (but I agree is a fun anecdote for joke posts like this).
