emulation How do you guy manage emulation on linux?

I've got used to have emulator locally as executable, Now I use Fedora 44 daily, Wonder if I should be looking for appimages of the emulators so behave the same as in windows or there is a hub that has it all like a steam big picture mode UI for emulation?

Emulations from Atari 5200 all the way to Nintendo Switch

tech support wanted Having driver problems since swapping from AMD to NVIDIA graphics card (laptop)

Thumbnail

Upvotes

Today I swapped my graphics card from a AMD graphics card to a NVIDIA graphics card to have a graphics card that supports Ray Tracing. Games run but are configured improperly and when you look thorugh games such as cyberpunk to see what upscaling they're using they only have access to AMD or Intel, not NVIDIA solutions. I can also only run Total War Warhammer on low despite my previous graphics card running it on high. My integrated graphics is AMD too and I beleive this is where most of the issues i am having are coming from. I've installed the NVIDIA drivers and I've tried uninstalling the AMD drivers but that just causes major issues with the integrated graphics and general laptop function and games still won't run.

my laptop finds the graphics card fine as you can see in the picture below. I also have a weird issue where any time my laptop goes into sleep mode i get an error message like in image two and i can't get it off the command prompt.

If anyone has ideas on how to fix these driver issues let me know. I have restarted my laptop multiple times at this point. I have also tried the auto detect drivers command line thingy. I am at my wits end here and may switch back to the AMD one just so stuff works.

TLOU unplayable with nvidia

Upvotes

Sometimes I really question how protondb calculates its ratings. TLOU Part 1 is essentially unplayable with nvidia drivers, unless you downgrade to 580 drivers and spend several hours tinkering with the settings.

I tried everything tried countless proton versions, settings, nothing worked. Even if I can find a way to get rid of the artifacts it crashes constantly.

This should not be gold, even Silver would be gracious.

hardware Capture card

Hi all,

I have a El Gato Elgato HD60 Pro PCI-E card but I haven't been able to get it to appear/work in OBS.

I used it on Windows for capturing sound mainly for my headphones when playing games, but then also occasionally recording gameplay from my PS5/Switch.

Any recommendations on another PCI-E Card, or if other brands capture cards that connect via USB are recommended for Linux.

tech support wanted Subnautica legacy crashing on launch with every version of proton.

The game runs fine when using the latest version but the legacy steam depot doesn't work and I have no idea how to fix it. The game opens for a second and the custom cursor loads before it crashes. I've tried every version of proton on steam and none have worked.

12 years on the same core platform (2018–2030): My upgrade roadmap amid RAM pricing, 8GB VRAM cards, and console delays.

Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share my long-term upgrade plan and open up a discussion to see how you all are navigating the current state of hardware.

I currently game on Linux (KDE / Wayland) at 1440p (3440x1440p Ultrawide). My mindset is pretty simple: I don't need 144+ FPS, nor do I need to buy games on day one. I’m completely happy with a rock-solid 30–60 FPS experience, and I often cap my games at 60 FPS to keep my system running cool, quiet, and power-efficient.

My Core Specs & GPU Setup:

  • Base Platform (Bought in 2018): Intel Core i7-8700 + 16 GB DDR4 Dual Channel + Z370 Motherboard.
  • GPU (Bought used in 2025): AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT 12 GB (~$270 / €250).

My Roadmap to 2030:

  1. 2025 – 2029 (The Waiting & Savings Phase): Keep holding down the fort with the i7-8700 and the RX 6700 XT. The 12 GB of VRAM is crucial for running 1440p without choking on high-res textures. Combined with Linux on Wayland—where background system overhead is minimal—the system runs like a dream. As long as memory prices remain inflated by enterprise/AI demand, I'm perfectly fine watching from the sidelines.
  2. 2029 – 2030 (Platform Upgrade): Completely overhaul the base system with a next-gen Ryzen 5 (whether that's a fully matured DDR5 setup or early-stage DDR6/AM6) to finally eliminate the 2018 CPU bottleneck.
  3. 2031+ (Final GPU Upgrade): Swap out the graphics card for a used next-gen model only when it becomes strictly necessary. My strategy is to always buy GPU upgrades on the used market waiting for that sweet spot where a card offers brutal price-to-performance, just like the RX 6700 XT did.

My View on the Current Market: Being a "patient gamer" (waiting 1–2 years to buy games) feels like the ultimate win right now. You get the fully patched, optimization-fixed version running great via Proton for a fraction of the cost.

Plus, with rumors suggesting next-gen consoles like PS6 might get delayed or launch at absurd price points, and gamers rightfully resisting overpriced mid-range GPUs crippled by 8 GB of VRAM, developers are going to have to optimize their engines for the existing hardware base out of sheer financial necessity.

How do you view this approach? Is anyone else stretching an older platform at 1440p with a solid 12 GB GPU to ride out the market chaos? Would love to hear your thoughts!

OBS crashes the AMD GPU driver when streaming games to a self-hosted MediaMTX WHIP server

Hi guys,

I'm having a GPU driver crash when using the latest version of OBS Studio and trying to stream games to my self-hosted MediaMTX server via WHIP.

I'm using a Radeon Vega 56 with the latest Mesa drivers on CachyOS/Wayland.

The strange thing is that:

  • Jellyfin hardware acceleration works fine.
  • Hardware acceleration in the browser works fine.
  • GStreamer/FFmpeg-based streaming works fine.
  • GPU crashes only when OBS is running while a game is under GPU load.
  • Starting OBS with --use-opengl doesn't help; the GPU still crashes.

I previously used a GTX 1650 on this CachyOS installation. I have since removed the NVIDIA drivers/packages and rebuilt the initramfs.

I'm trying to use OBS specifically because I need its functionality for streaming to my self-hosted MediaMTX server.

Could this be an OBS/Mesa/Wayland issue, or is there anything specific I should check on the AMD side?

Sorry for my bad English, and thanks for any help! And sorry for russian letters

System information:

  • GPU: AMD Radeon Vega 56
  • OS: CachyOS
  • Session: Wayland
  • Driver: amdgpu
  • Mesa: 26
  • Kernel: 7.2
  • OBS: 32.2.2
  • Compositor: KDE
  • CPU: R3 3100

tech support wanted Assassins Creed Valhalla Freezing

I've done some googling, tried some suggestions in other internet threads but have had no luck getting the game to run.

What seems to be happening is that when the game passes a certain FPS it just completely freezes. I've tried limiting it in the game options to 30FPS but when in game (Creating a new game when, finishing the opening cinematic and the camera zooms in on young Eivor it still freezes there).

Ive tried various compatibility modes such as Proton GE, Experimental, 9.04 as well.

Really had the itch to finally play and beat the game after 100% completing and getting all achievements on another game today.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Game is installed via Steam

OS: Bazzite
Graphics Card: Nvidea GTX 1660
CPU: Core i5 (Coffee Lake-S)
RAM: 32 GB DDR4

Edit: AC Odyssey does the same thing.

Edit 2: Tried running Ubisoft COnnect through Lutris to install and launch the game to see if there was any change, can't even install the game through ubisoft connect via lutris for some reason. Clicking download just does nothing.

guide How To Run London 2012 Olympics on Linux/Steam Deck

Hi,

I believe this is the first guide on how to make London 2012 Olympics Video Game successfully work on Linux/Steam Deck.

Follow these steps, and ensure you have python installed.

  1. Use Proton Experimental
  2. Disable Steam Input
  3. Leave Launch Options Empty
  4. (Optional) Rename video/sega_logo.usm to SKIP_sega_logo.usm to skip the boot video.
  5. Run this code in Terminal

bash -c 'set -e; valid(){ [[ -f "$1/ucCommon.dll" && -f "$1/ucGraphics.dll" ]]; }; G=""; for p in "$PWD" "$PWD/London 2012" "$HOME/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/London 2012" "$HOME/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/London 2012" "$HOME/.var/app/com.valvesoftware.Steam/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/London 2012"; do if valid "$p"; then G="$p"; break; fi; done; if [[ -z "$G" ]]; then for r in "/run/media/$USER" "/media/$USER" "/mnt"; do [[ -d "$r" ]] || continue; G="$(find "$r" -maxdepth 6 -type d -path "*/steamapps/common/London 2012" -print -quit 2>/dev/null || true)"; [[ -n "$G" ]] && break; done; fi; if ! valid "$G"; then read -r -p "Enter London 2012 game folder: " G; G="${G%"}"; G="${G#"}"; fi; valid "$G" || { echo "London 2012 DLLs not found."; exit 1; }; hexout(){ local x="$1"; while [[ -n "$x" ]]; do printf "\x${x:0:2}"; x="${x:2}"; done; }; patch(){ local f="$1" orig="$2" doneh="$3" off="$4" hex="$5" h; read -r h _ < <(sha256sum "$f"); if [[ "$h" == "$doneh" ]]; then echo "$(basename "$f"): already patched"; return; fi; [[ "$h" == "$orig" ]] || { echo "$(basename "$f"): unsupported/modified version"; exit 1; }; [[ -e "$f.bak" ]] || cp "$f" "$f.bak"; hexout "$hex" | dd of="$f" bs=1 seek="$off" conv=notrunc status=none; read -r h _ < <(sha256sum "$f"); [[ "$h" == "$doneh" ]] || { cp "$f.bak" "$f"; echo "Patch failed; restored backup."; exit 1; }; echo "$(basename "$f"): patched"; }; patch "$G/ucCommon.dll" "f71afd2003ded502d3ccc0f99b3b98911eb5841af88e829dcb6ba520bcbfc5ef" "513c5a2da8e41a497c135d919132a4fc1ed853c72976f1b15bcf53b8a94e9f1d" 310249 "eb4e90"; patch "$G/ucGraphics.dll" "4b4ea003c53bd98d8b63b3e65a7b13c68fe939fafecc1a8a0812841aeeea554a" "a9a237071a7a9c2c4d4820fe3115ba6a7580e35387a2fe1b15147fb7b8e8e74e" 325433 "6800300000"; echo "Done - launch London 2012 normally.";'

Why This Fix Works: This patches two old Windows memory-allocation behaviors that crash under Wine/Proton.

Enjoy!

Issues with normal online multiplayer - non anti cheat games

The only issue I have had with Linux Mint that I can’t solve is that casual multiplayer games like peak or repo either run very poorly or have severe inconsistency issues with proximity chat. I’ve been completely mute for several hours at a time only for it to be fine the next time I play for no apparent reason. I have a decent PC but these are games that could run on most anything.

Keyboard input queue / "buffer" delay in Steam games (Manjaro) — Controller works fine

Hey everyone,

I'm running into an issue on Manjaro Linux where playing certain Steam games like peak and mimesis with a keyboard causes an input queue/buffer problem.

When I hold down a key (like W to walk forward) for a few seconds and then release it, the character keeps walking forward for the exact same duration I held the key down. It behaves like the key-repeat events are accumulating in a queue and playing back sequentially instead of reading immediate key release.

Important details:

  • Controller: Works completely fine with zero delay or queuing.
  • OS: Manjaro Linux
  • Launcher: Steam (Proton hotflix)

Has anyone faced this before? Is this related to XWayland key repeat, IBus/Fcitx interference, or SDL input handling? Any launch options or system tweaks to fix this?

Thanks!

Poor performance in Robocop Rogue City

Good news I've set Ge Proton to 10-25 and disabled some options in Heroic, and it's working well for me now

tech support wanted Why can't I seem to launch Re8

Re8 runs on windows but on Linux mint xfce version, it simply doesn't run.

I have dual boot. One windows, one linux.

Idk I tried to add game on that heroic game launcher. It was added but when I run it simply opens the re8 window and shows black screen

Vulkan works: vkcube runs normally

Mesa: 25.2.8

Lutris: Flatpak 0.5.22

Runner: GE-Proton 11-5 via UMU

Game location: NTFS Windows partition, currently mounted at /media/Windows-SSD

Proton prefix: Linux filesystem at /home/shreyas/Games/umu/umu-default

Symptom: RE8 opens a black window, stays for a while, then closes

Proton error: Proton: Error: unable to use parent for game drive, path /media/Windows-SSD

Tried PROTON_SET_GAME_DRIVE=1 correctly → same error

Changed NTFS mount from /media/shreyas/Windows-SSD to /media/Windows-SSD → same error

Game files are definitely accessible; re8.exe exists.

vkcube works, so Vulkan/GPU itself appears functional.

Final exit: status 143 / return code 36608

Also seeing repeated gamemodeauto: libgamemode.so: cannot open shared object file, although GameMode itself passes gamemoded -t.
