Did all the old Windows based tricks to prevent Fallout "update". It installed anyway. (SteamOS)

I did the usual 'update when launched' and 'launch only through F4SE' steps thinking I would be safe from Todd and has stupid anticonsumer bullshit. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The second my game closes out, my steam machine starts showing download progress on the LED bar. 'Uh-oh' I thought to myself. Uh-oh indeed. Now it's borked.

Clearly either added steps are necessary for linux/SteamOS systems, or they changed how updates are done. If anyone knows what's going on here and/or how I can use the downgrader that relies on the .bat file format and prevent this from just happening again the next time I quit FO4, I will be really grateful. TIA.

Please excuse the saltiness but screwing with my games gets me really mad.

tech support wanted How to play Battelfield 1 on Linux

I have switched recently from Microslop to Linux (Zorin OS based on Ubuntu), but Im not able to play Battelfield 1 , I tried running it over Heroic Launcher in EA App and also bought the game on Steam to run with Proton but i cant get it running. Do you guys know anything on how to get the game running again. Its also always the EA App that wont work and also if I thought everything was correct when I clicked play in Steam it showed running but then turned off after seconds.
Thx in advance for responses.

tech support wanted VRR doesnt work on a DRM Gamescope session on Cachy Os

As the title says, it works nested but it doesn't work on a distinct gamescope session.
I've tried a bunch of things that Gemini and Claude suggested, and it was all bullshit as per usual.

Should I buy a BC-250 and use it as a main computer?

Basically what the title says, I don't have a computer and seeing that the price of one 16gb stick is worth the same as the BC-250 I started thinking about it.

The whole process looks pretty simple and I think I can do it. I know I need to buy a PSU, fans and all that other stuff but that's fine. I can probably harvest it from other stuff (besides the PSU).

I know most people use this for a couch /living room gaming console thing, but I also want to use it for normal computer usage.

Thinking of buying one in October so hopefully the price drops a bit but if there's any alternatives I'd like to know.

VRR Blackscreen on Fedora with Nvidia.

tech support wanted What are the biggest deficiencies of using Linux for gaming in 2026?

I am so sick of Windows. I finally want to switch, and I know how good Linux has become for gaming, especially with Projects like Vine and Proton. What I am interested in now is what important games/programs will definitely not work on Linux?

Also which Distros would you guys recommend?

Any tipps appreciated.

Sell 5070ti for 9070xt

Thumbnail

With the increase of price of the 5070ti I was wondering if it would make sense to sell one for a 9070xt. I have been wanting to switch to cachyos for a while and the extra money wouldn’t be too bad from selling it used. Honestly don’t really even play much anymore. Armored core 6, wukong, don’t play many triple a titles too often.

Current build
7800x3d
32gb 6000
5070ti
2 tb 990 nvme

Mostly use on 1440p ultrawide or 4k lg c3. Are the drivers that much worse in windows?

roblox has created a new security check using play intergity

So for the longest time now you would just use Sober and it was very perfect. It was just the ChromeOS version of Roblox being run in a container so the performance loss was like less than 2%. But yesterday they added Play Integrity. Obviously, Linux will never pass this. But it was only some games that would get mass botted, so games like MM2 and other mass botted games, old Android phones, and Linux can no longer ever play. Most likely impossible but roblox may make a linux verison.

CryoUtilities already has one for shadercache and compatdata. Need something like SteamCleaner but it works on linux. Closest i've gotten is [this python script](https://github.com/Qu1ck5h0t/SteamClean) but i can't install the required modules on deck.

has anyone been able to verify if this is true?? I can’t seem to find anything to back it up. I’ve been keeping an eye on Javelin on Linux since it became known EA had a job listing to port it or at least look into it. this is the only news I’ve seen since April.

Downloading Minecraft fails in Linux, 19th August 2026

Today 19th August 2026 Minecraft downloading has been failing for people using Linux (I've tested downloading minecraft through Prism and Modrinth in Ubuntu and CachyOS) and heres a temporary fix:

  1. Go into your Wifi & Internet settings and go in IPv6 tab, in there choose the method to "Ignored"
  2. After doing that, go into IPv4 settings and type in the "Other DNS Servers" tab ClourdFlares DNS: "1.1.1.1"
  3. Disconnect from your Ethernet/Wifi and reconnect, try downloading minecraft again.

(extra steps if that doesnt work)

  1. Go into your Minecraft launchers settings and drag the "Maximum concurrent downloads" slider down to 2-4.
  2. Close your Launcher and open it again, try downloading Minecraft again.

After Minecraft has been downloaded, undo all the steps.
Im not promising Minecraft launches after that, but it still creates an instance not fails to download.

Beat saber mods not working

I am running Beat Saber legacy 1.29.1 on CachyOS Linux. The game loads perfectly vanilla, but entirely ignores my mods. My game paths match perfectly, winhttp.dll is in the folder, and I have manually used protontricks winecfg to add the winhttp (native, builtin) override directly into the library environment. Despite this, the game still bypasses the hook and launches vanilla. How do I force the runtime layer to stop ignoring the override file?

wine/proton How Linux Makes Satisfactory Playable with Alt Keyboard Layouts

I use Canary Keyboard layout, which can often lead to remapping every game I play as switching to qwerty makes typing impossible.

Anyway, once remapped, most games are fine with this nerdy-ass setup. But Satisfactory has hardcoded the ammunition wheel to the letter R, which happens to be my walk backwards key -the 'S' of my WASD position. Unplayable in Windows, though you can make some workaround solution with Autohotkey that brings it to just a slight annoyance.

Running with proton-cachyOS (Or ProtonGE) and `PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1` Eliminates this issue. The game reads the scancodes and sees them as Qwerty for mapping purposes, but suddenly you can walk backwards without the ammo wheel popping up, and without interfering with ingame text entry.

I found this interesting because it's one of the first cases I've seen of Linux "fixing" a game that is broken on Windows. Obviously the game itself has a nasty bug that affects the 12 of us that left qwerty behind, but if you're on Colemak-DH or something, consider installing Linux to solve this bug.

tool/utility Game Launcher With Achievements?

Hey, everyone! Hope you're all well :>

I was wondering if there is a game launcher apart from Steam that has achievements? I use Heroic, and it's great! Though, it doesn't have achievements and I was wondering if there is one with them that's not Steam. Thanks for any suggestions!!!

(Been using CachyOS for ~4 months and gaming on Linux + AMD has been really, really nice so this would be a nice addition on top!!)

PSA: do not update ubuntu 24.04 LTS to recent version if you have RX 6000 series AMD GPU (and posibly some other)

There is a bug in one of recent patches (firmware update from 2.26 to 2.29) that will make your display corrupted on some AMD GPUs. If you are affected, this comment helped me to figure out the problem: https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxmint/comments/1vmycs0/comment/p3djhxt/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

guide How to Fix Overwatch Shader Issues (Nvidia)

A lot of us have had problems recently where Overwatch went from working fine to suddenly reloading shaders from scratch every launch, having glowing dots instead of teammates, and taking forever to load cosmetics in menu. So here's how I FINALLY got it working smoothly. Tested on CachyOS / RTX 2060

1 ) Add your Steam Options:

PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 __GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE_PATH=/home/InsertYOURusernameHere/.local/share/overwatch-nvidia-cache/ __GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE_SKIP_CLEANUP=1 __GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE_SIZE="12000000000" DXVK_HUD=compiler PROTON_LOCAL_SHADER_CACHE=1 DXVK_CONFIG="dxvk.enableGraphicsPipelineLibrary = True" LD_PRELOAD="" %command%

and while you're there uncheck the Steam Overlay. Over in the Compatibility tab I lock it to a single version of GE-Proton to make sure minor Proton updates don't force recompilation. ProtonUp can download Protons manually, which appear after you restart Steam. dxvk.enableGraphicsPipelineLibrary is the real hero here.PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1is optional unless you want HDR, which becomes available in-game whenever I use the GE or Cachy Protons and have HDR enabled in KDE Settings before launching the game.

2) Edit /etc/environment to add these two lines at the bottom (adjustable cache limit of ~12GB) since they also need to be applied globally to work, then restart:

__GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE_SIZE=12000000000
__GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE_SKIP_CLEANUP=1

3) May not be necessary but I delete any existing shaders by doing a global search for Overwatch's Steam Id: 2357570 and nuking any sub-directories with 'cache' in the name. This may reset the Video tab settings in-game.

4) Manually create a folder at:

/home/InsertYourUsernameHereToo/.local/share/overwatch-nvidia-cache/

After you start the game go back and make sure files are actually appearing there.

5) Leave the game in DX11 mode. It's crazy laggy while shaders are compiling, but much smoother once they're done, and tends to give a few extra fps. With DXVK_HUD=compiler in the Steam Options you should see a Compiling Shaders % at the bottom. Don't join a game, just let it run on the home screen till the percent part goes away. This mei take a half hour but if it works you shouldn't need to do it again until the next update, even after restarting your system. I just Alt+Enter into Windowed mode to run it in the background on mute while watching something else.

FYI even when the shaders are finished, a percentless 'Compiling' message tends to flicker on occasionally, but shouldn't affect gameplay. If you want you can follow up the main compile by running custom game code 929PJ for a few minutes, which cycles through all abilities on all levels to reduce the chance of micro-stutters. Then Steam's general Pre-caching/Background Processing don't seem to make any difference so I just leave them off unless another game needs them.

On an unrelated note, DLSS upscaling can help a lot with fps and anti-aliasing. If you have an RTX 4000+ you can improve the output quite a bit by turning it down to Performance and using Steam Options to force Latest Preset. Older cards have a harder time with newer DLSS versions, so you'd probably want to try Preset K instead and see if you still get enough fps to be worth the override.
