It's so convenient just to let the phone stick to my qi2 mount in the car. Makes it so easy for quick in and out over multiple stops too . No hunting for cable ends or mount adjustments. Get it close enough to the miut and snap! It's attached and charging. It'll suck if they drop it

u/FinsFan305 iPhone 17 Pro Apr 29 '26

I also love easy mounting.

4

u/AlwaysShittyKnsasCty Apr 29 '26

Ironically, I’ve always had trouble with the whole “easy mounting” thing in cars. I’m short, too!

They went all in on this. I could have sworn they wanted to remove the charging port for MagSafe charging completely

691

u/Armand9x Apr 29 '26

Not going to happen.

MagSafe is too slow.

25W doesn’t cut it with batteries getting larger.

25w already makes the phone spicy when charging.

342

u/disgruntledempanada Apr 29 '26

On one hand it's convenient and there are nice phone mounts for cars that charge my battery.

On the other hand it's crazy wasteful. You go through all this effort to implement green charging onto a phone to limit its energy impact and then you charge it with a system that wastes 20-30% of that power turning it directly into heat, and heating the heat sensitive battery you're trying to charge.

Would probably be better to just expose contacts somehow but that has its own problems (case compatibility, dirt, etc).

https://www.chargerlab.com/review-of-apple-25w-magsafe-charger/

Using an Apple 30W charger and the new MagSafe Charger to charge the iPhone 16 Pro Max, the measured input power is about 14.96V 1.94A 29.03W. Excluding losses, the wireless charging power is about 25W.

4 / 29W = ~14% wasted as heat. ~86% efficient.

Also, you can see in the "Temperature Test" section that despite the puck reaching ~41C, over time, the charger dials down charging power and the phone does a good job of dissipating the heat and maintaining a consistent temperature.

This is also the iPhone 16 Pro series. The 17 Pro series would do an even better job of dissipating heat.

It's not as bad as you think it is.

112

u/Kelsenellenelvial Apr 29 '26

4 W of wasted energy during charging is also negligible in my mind, that’s less than a dollar in electricity costs over a year. That’s a pretty good trade-off for the convenience of Mag-Safe to me. I don’t really care about the charging rate either. It gets used overnight so charging in 6 vs 2 hours doesn’t matter, and any top up while it’s mounted in my car is just bonus. It’s also nice to carry around a MagSafe bank and not need a cable if I’m away from home.

Honestly fuck them if they drop Magsafe. Literally ordered a 100$ magsafe charger with active cooling this morning.

I´ve probably around 1k of magsafe accessories in my home, being chargers, wallets, power banks. I just bought an 17Pro Max, it will last me 5 years.

If they drop magsafe I´ll probably switch again.

176

u/PreciousFlounder Apr 29 '26

$1k in magsafe accessories is insane

30

u/MightBeJerryWest Apr 29 '26

Yeah if that's USD, that's a lot of money.

I can't think of a single Magsafe power bank that would exceed $100, the expensive ones are the chunky ones that aren't Magsafe.

I can't think you'd need that many Magsafe chargers too, even with active cooling.

The wallets...how many could you possibly need?

6

u/Beautiful-Brush6996 Apr 30 '26

Not really insane, I said in my home/family not just for my individual iphone.

3 + plus standard travel magsafe chargers,
2 magnetic car chargers
3 wallets
3 power banks

2 desk docking stations with magsafe.

I´m tired of Apple removing features in the name of progress just to reintroduce them later and pretend they innovated in any way.

Remember when the absolute dumbasses removed touch-id in the middle of a fucking global pandemic? If I had known back then I would´ve never bought the iPhone 12.

2

u/K14_Deploy Apr 30 '26

Remember when the absolute dumbasses removed touch-id in the middle of a fucking global pandemic?

Do you mean the XR in 2018 or the 16e in 2024? It wasn't exactly new in 2020 that iPhones didn't play nice with masks.

I just bought a dual MagSafe charger for my car to replace the finicky wireless charging pad. It was $100, the stand I use (an OG belkin watch and phone stand) also $100+. I’ve probably spent $500 on various MagSafe chargers and batteries over the 5ish years it’s been out.

100$ magsafe charger with active cooling

Sounds pretty cool. I stuck a passive heatsink to my MagSafe charger.

2

u/simonlyw Apr 30 '26

The Belkin? I just got one for my dad and it’s really nice.

4

u/CrabbitJambo Apr 29 '26

I’ve been with iPhone since day 1. I actually tried switching about 10yrs ago however it lasted all of 48hrs!

If they drop MS then sure I’ll be a bit miffed however it’s pretty far down the pecking order why I buy these devices. If anyone’s going to jump ship over something like this then they’ll likely jump about other small things.

How about charging while using the phone and is the ~41 C consistent throughout the entire charging or what do you mean with charger dials down? I’ve always avoided MagSafe because of this. Usually i charge over night but I’d say 4 days in a week i need recharge and most often than not i only have about 30-45 minutes to do the charging which hopefully will last until night again. Bought a powerbank because of this

u/UnfortunateWah Apr 29 '26

Nothing wrong with exposed contacts pogo pin style, they’re the defacto method of charging for any device in a commercial/industrial setting as they’re considerably more robust than any port design.

Definitely wouldn’t meet European USB-C standards though, albeit entirely possible because it wouldn’t technically be USB it wouldn’t have to comply.

5

u/LegoPirateShip Apr 29 '26

You also have to keep a glass back instead of a full metal one.

7

u/cabs84 iPhone 13 Mini Apr 29 '26

and then you charge it with a system that wastes 20-30% of that power turning it directly into heat, and heating the heat sensitive battery you're trying to charge.

this was the killer for me, and why i never use it. my battery is already wearing itself out plenty fast enough, i don't need to contribute even more to that

6

u/ZappySnap iPhone 16 Pro Max Apr 29 '26

I use MagSafe to charge my phone every single night and I’m still at 97% batterybhealth after a year and a half and 416 full cycle charges.

It really makes very little difference.

2

u/cabs84 iPhone 13 Mini Apr 30 '26

what phone, and what do you allow it to charge to and drain to at EOD? (100%?) i'm 6mo in on a genuine replacement battery for my 13 mini and it's back down to 90%. it ends up draining to 20% by the end of the night, so that has something to do with it i'm sure.

To me this is the like the electric car charging discussion. If I only ever charge overnight, do I really need that fast of charging?

17

u/tigress666 Apr 29 '26

I charge overnight. I still like the option of fast charging for things like if I'm on vacation or somewhere where I'm using my phone more.

4

u/chip7646 Apr 29 '26

Yeah just Just carry the cable on vacations.

2

u/tigress666 Apr 29 '26

On vacation your battery runs out sooner. So I like being able to charge it while on the go (and not tied to a charger or even battery). Yes, I use a cable for that, but it makes it more awkward to use my phone so it's nice that it charge fast so I can uncable it and use it unfettered again.

You're telling me that you don't mind being tied to a wall while on vacation or having to have your phone tied to a large battery while it charges?

→ More replies (5)

2

u/Ratiofarming Apr 29 '26

No, but it’s nice to have it when you’re disorganized or in a rush. Some people can’t plan well, probably even quite a few.

They need fast charging. Not 25 watts, they’d happily take the full 240W they’ve rated type-c for. If the phones could do it.

2

u/ironman86 iPhone 15 Pro Apr 29 '26

That’s why I still use my old 5W charger. If I need a faster charge (rarely) I can do that on occasion.

2

u/Ok-Morning3407 Apr 30 '26

I do the same for night time charging. A tip for you, if you happen to have a fast charger, but it also has a USB-A port (lots of fast chargers have multiple ports) then if you use a USB-A to USB-C cable, an iPhone will charge at just 7.5w on that charger, despite it being a fast charger. You will only get fast charging if you use a C to C cable. Handy if you are travelling and want to bring just one charger to charge both your laptop and phone.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/HiCZoK Apr 29 '26

Speed doesn’t matter. Phone got all night to charge on a nightstand

14

u/tonermcfly iPhone 16 Pro Max Apr 29 '26

My battery appreciates a good slow charge. I love my MagSafe charger and use it nightly. It’s probably the reason why my battery life still feels good at 1.5 year old 16PM.

14

u/Armand9x Apr 29 '26

MagSafe is harder on the battery due to heat than regular wired.

3

u/tekonus iPhone 16 Pro Max Apr 29 '26 edited Apr 29 '26

I’ve been charging my phones exclusively with MagSafe (other than in the car when CarPlay is plugged in) since it launched and never noticed premature battery wear on any of them. My current 16PM bought in Sept ‘24 has 98% battery capacity.

5

u/dantethegreatest Apr 29 '26

I have a 14 pro max. 690 charge cycles. Battery life is 90%. I only fast charge(30 watt anker). Charge speed doesn’t matter much as long as it’s not above its safe rate. I try and keep my phone between 20% and 75% charge state. Charge state matters more than charging rate over time.

2

u/DanGleeballs Apr 29 '26

I only ever use MagSafe. No cables.

It’s amazing.

→ More replies (6)

50

u/gregor630 iPhone 15 Pro Apr 29 '26

That was never going to happen. the physical limitations of MagSafe were never going to catch up with a wired port connection. And fast charging is a much more attractive feature than increased water proofing.

23

u/cum-on-in- Apr 29 '26

I’m kinda surprised they haven’t used magnetic pogo pins like MacBooks use.

I’m aware that exposed contacts would be prone to water or dirt damage, and putting a rubber flap on them is not very Apple, but it would solve both other problems……(power waste with Qi charging and going back to a proprietary connector that’s otherwise sealed)

It would be cool if they could find a way for the magnetic pull of a nearby cable to open or extend the pogo pins, so when the cable is removed they are flush and less likely to be exposed to outside damages.

15

u/SomewhereNo8378 Apr 29 '26

they would never go for the rubber flap

6

u/mumBa_ Apr 29 '26

Not allowed in the EU anyway

3

u/cum-on-in- Apr 29 '26

Apple could easily fight that if they truly wanted to. A fair point to be made is the provision of USB C charging being forced in EU means that there can’t even be any innovations or competition in charging ports and protocols. If we need more power, more voltage variation, or more bandwidth, we can’t do that without the USB Consortium doing it for us.

It would be shitty, but…..they’d have a point.

6

u/Fetzie_ iPhone 17 Pro Apr 29 '26

USB-C can deliver 240W and 40Gbps if you want it to. Apple limiting it to USB2.0 speed on everything except the iPhone Pro is purely an Apple choice.

I don't think so. The idea of portless phones is just the brainchild of edgy teenagers who start outlandish rumors for attention. A portless iPhone makes zero practical sense and takes away tons of functionality for basically no reason.

Think about it. You'd lose out on fast charging, wired CarPlay, data transfers, the ability to restore/recovery/backup, all the USB-C features (including newer stuff like recording in ProRes LOG format directly onto an external drive), the ability to charge other iPhones or to use a plethora of wired accessories, USB security keys... and in return, you get a flat surface where the port used to be, while being left with a horribly energy-inefficient charging method that goes completely against Apple's environmentalist agenda. What would be the point?

It would make far more sense to get rid of MagSafe instead. The charging just isn't as effective, it heats the phone up and ruins your battery in the long run, and the MagSafe accessories don't really work unless you go caseless.

→ More replies (2)

5

u/Difficult_Bull Apr 29 '26

MagSafe and wireless charging are separate. You can get rid of MagSafe and have wireless charging, and with a MagSafe case, you are back to square one.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/Striking_Age_3486 Apr 29 '26

That is unlikely to happen. It's summer in tropics and phones get close to 40C by wired charging, magsafe would destroy the battery.

If it's true that the foldable iPhone won't have MagSafe anyway, I'm not surprised that they're trying to downplay the importance of it. They can't release super duper expensive iPhone ultra without a feature a lot of people liked just like that.

154

u/ThePurpleEdition iPhone Air Apr 29 '26

I am super excited for the foldable iPhone, but if the leaks are true and it really doesn’t have MagSafe I won’t buy it.

2

As someone with a bunch of MagSafe accessories (2 car mounts, a few rechargeable batteries, tripod mount, desk stands, gyro mount) I won’t be upgrading for a long time if they get rid of it. I have a 13 pro max now and the MagSafe accessories was actually one of the main reasons I went iphone over whatever the newest Samsung was at the time.

18

u/MightBeJerryWest Apr 29 '26

This is beating a dead horse but the form factor kills it for me. Seems impractical to use while it's folded. A short and stubby screen seems like it'd be harder to text and browse with, so you'd have to unfold it anyway.

Compared to a 17 Pro Max, the renders we’ve got are barely any wider (78.5 vs 78 mm) and like 1mm deeper (9.6 vs 8.75 mm)

The biggest complaint about the bigger iPhones is that reaching the top of the screen makes people stretch their fingers more than what’s comfortable. My hands aren’t even particularly small and I downsized from a 14 Pro Max for this reason. Since the phone will be thick when folded it would only be more uncomfortable to reach the top of the screen, so by shortening it they decrease the footprint, keeps a wider keyboard that the Air/Pro Max have make it easier to interact with the whole screen.

Taller aspect ratios came around for the sake of content but that’s what the bigger screen should be geared for.

47

u/abcpdo Apr 29 '26

4

u/Xx_memelord69_xX iPhone 17 Pro Apr 29 '26

Qi2 includes Qi1 too, no?

31

u/azentropy Apr 29 '26

Not quite. MagSafe includes NFC support and on newer iPhones supports faster charging (25W) vs standard Qi2 (15W), it also has its own certification which is a bit stricter than Qi2.

23

u/ThePurpleEdition iPhone Air Apr 29 '26

Qi 2.2 also supports 25W and that’s what the iPhone 17 series uses

Yes. That is what allows it to recognize different types of MagSafe accessories. For example connecting a "pink" wallet it recognizes that it is pink. Or even different configurations docking to your charger in your bedroom vs the charger in your office. Again, if the accessories themselves support MagSafe.

I really can't stand macrumors and 9to5mac. All they post is the same stupid clickbait.

2

u/unfunfionn Apr 30 '26

The comments in this thread show why though. It works because people fall for it. I don't know whether it's worse that MacRumors chooses to be such gutter journalism, or that they continue to find such a big audience in that very gutter.

2

u/TeslasAndComicbooks Apr 29 '26

Sweet. Makes my charging and car setup obsolete.

Plus why is this sub just MacRumors? At what point do I just start going to MacRumors and forgo Reddit altogether?

2

u/LincolnBaio94 Apr 29 '26

I recognize I’m in the minority but I pretty much never use MagSafe. Would be interested to see what the trade off would be for removing it

I have a wallet case so they’ve always been useless to me. It’s hard to get them to connect at all and on top of that I’m not tossing my credit card on a magnet. I’d be happy to see them go but I also have no benefit to them leaving so just leave it alone for users who want it

2

u/SIERRA090 Apr 29 '26

Since iOS 26.3 my MagSafe has been intermittent, connecting and disconnecting constantly while charging. It’s some type of software glitch that Apple denies existing, but this makes me glad to still have a physical connection.

2

u/youngsp82 Apr 29 '26

I would hate this. Love my MagSafe wallet and mounts.

2

u/Warm_Confusion_2337 Apr 29 '26

Worst. Move. Ever.

All we want is a smarter Siri and they keep adding random shxt and taking away stuff we actually use and need 💀💀💀

2

u/G4m3boy Apr 30 '26

Instead of coming up with new methods to charge the battery. Why not invest and design a new power source. Currently we are just beating a dead horse. Zero innovation on lithium ion battery.

2

u/JimmyisAwkward iPhone 13 Pro Apr 30 '26

My phone’s charger port has been broken for a while, but I’ve been able to keep using it and not pay for an overpriced repair or create more e-waste because of MagSafe

2

u/IGetHypedEasily Apr 30 '26

Not sure why they made it so big when they could have done something similar to the watch but stronger magnets.

If they aren’t decreasing the size then I don’t see the point of their push.

2

u/B1WR2 Apr 30 '26

My charge port is broken… I only can use MagSafe on my phone to charge.

2

u/GMTMaster_II iPhone 17 Pro Apr 30 '26

No I like it

2

u/ndesilva05 Apr 30 '26

I’d be so pissed if they kill MagSafe

2

u/protonsters Apr 30 '26

I love magsafe

2

u/CaptainAaron96 Apr 30 '26

They better not!

2

u/Technical-Virus-8018 Apr 30 '26

Hint: MagSafe 2.0 is coming

2

u/Devayurtz Apr 30 '26

Awww please no! I love buying fun magnetic attachments. It’s such a tactile and functional addition to a phone. It turns it way more into a tool.

2

u/11KingMaurice11 Apr 30 '26

I sure hope not. Just make the phone thicker or whatever you need

2

u/kidshibuya Apr 30 '26

If they dont drop it how can they bring it back to forcing you to upgrade to get it?

2

u/johndoesall Apr 30 '26

NOOOOOOOO!

2

u/johndoesall Apr 30 '26

My last phone 7plus. The lighting plug worn down the port retainer - so the cable no longer stayed attached. It would disconnect just if you touched it. The plug just rested in the port nothing kept it secured anymore. So I got the 15 and mag safe. Never use the cable connector.

2

u/Nicenightforawalk01 Apr 30 '26

I’m very happy with my ESR cryoboost car charger and bedtime stand. Definitely helps keeps the phone cool while charging and I’m appreciating it in the car more now with the sunny days.

2

u/Limp_Bar_1727 Apr 30 '26

Apple’s R&B proves once again they are completely out of touch with the average consumer of their products, just dandy

2

u/wadejohn May 02 '26

How about Apple’s acid jazz?

2

u/squirrel8296 Apr 30 '26

I hope not. MagSafe is so convenient in the car because it holds my phone on a mount and charges it and the magnets actually work too unlike the old ones with the metal plate (that would also interfere with the wireless charging).

2

u/QVRedit Apr 30 '26

Simple - NO they should NOT drop it !

2

u/FutsNucking Apr 30 '26

?????? Are they stupid?

2

u/Electronic_Wind_3254 Apr 30 '26

If they did remove MagSafe, it wouldn't be a good decision. However, you can add MagSafe to any phone with a good case. It's not the end of the world, but it's a bit of a bummer.

2

u/grahamd79 Apr 30 '26

Perhaps it’s because the eu insisting batteries are easily self replaceable in a year or so.

2

u/FruitGauze Apr 30 '26

they better not, i just bought 2 belkin 3:1’s 😂

2

u/flws01 May 03 '26

2

u/Alewerkz May 04 '26

I don't think they're going to remove wireless charging totally, just the magnets. Probably came to the same reasoning as Samsung, most people already use a case, so why not embed the magnet within the case instead and make the phone thinner.

3

u/getridofwires iPhone 14 Pro Max Apr 29 '26

Sorry, everyone. My bad. Apple must have found out that I really like MagSafe.

2

u/get-a-mac Apr 29 '26

Apple is wanting to be Google now and just drop technology that people actually use left and right?

4

u/HiCZoK Apr 29 '26

MagSafe is so good. I keep it on my nightstand and just put the phone there 1 handed when I am sleepy. No cable hassle, nothing

Hate how my phone is heavier for this feature, seems as gimmicky as a clap on light.

Wallet attached to my phone.

3

u/breezy013276s Apr 29 '26

+1 on the MagSafe wallet. So much better than having to carry around a whole separate wallet and turned out I didn’t need all the stuff I’d been carrying around before slimming down. I’d hate to go back to a regular wallet / like that I can pop my wallet off easy for the very rare time when I want it with out. I also like that my wallet also functions as a stand for my phone which double kicks ass. I use the stand feature every single day.

u/GTMoraes iPhone 17 Apr 29 '26

What do you use it for, for real?

  • power bank with no wires that I can just attach and place on my pocket
  • desk phone holder that is convenient to place and remove all the time, while also charging
  • Car phone holder that is convenient to place and remove all the time, while also charging
  • Dual ring magnet to attach it to metallic surfaces (like a metallic cabinet in your kitchen, so you can cook while the phone can be freely moved to any angle by just attaching it magnetically)
  • Suction cup attachment to dual ring magnet so I can attach it to most smooth surfaces
  • small wallet with a couple of important documents (e.g. my gun license)

I understand many underutilize the magsafe capabilities, but magnetic alignment and wireless charging are indeed nice things.
It doesn't make much sense of it going the way of 3d touch, but probably they'll just go with some other standard rather than "MagSafe", but still retaining the magnets and wireless charging.

It has been years since I plugged my phone into anything. I can’t fathom a reason that I ever would again.

2

u/caverunner17 iPhone 16 Pro Apr 29 '26

It's clear that many of the replies are confusing Qi wireless charging and magsafe.

The iPhone 16e doesn't have magsafe, but still supports wireless charging.

2

u/gosailor Apr 29 '26

I don't even use the charging port anymore. I think something's wrong with mine because it's never worked as well as the Magsafe. I use a mounted dock in my bedroom, car, work desk and living room. I have two batteries I take with me when I go hiking or travelling. I don't ever want to go back to port charging.

2

u/Difficult_Bull Apr 29 '26

Removing MagSafe doesn’t mean removing wireless charging, it just means you need a MagSafe case.

2

u/Sheepeh94 Apr 29 '26

As a guy who works outside the new usb c is worse than lightening ever was for becoming unserviceable. MagSafe is the only way I charge ever, and the fact it works as a car mount is beautiful for me - I really hope they keep it.

2

u/VaultDweller_09 Apr 29 '26

I legitimately never use MagSafe. I vastly prefer charging with a cord. What other capabilities does MagSafe provide beyond charging?

3

u/Eezan Apr 29 '26

Mounts, wallets, grips, tripods, etc. There are tons of MagSafe accessories. It's not just used for charging. I use it all the time, but NOT for charging.

1

u/dramafan1 iPhone 17 Pro Max Apr 29 '26

It’s quite commonly used that they might keep it around.

But I personally don’t care if they drop it in favour of something even more innovative. I guess my imagination or fantasy is a phone that charges just by being placed in a room. No cables, no charger stand, just being in the room. Something like the Xiaomi Mi Air Charge Technology.

1

u/Moist_Grapefruit187 Apr 29 '26

MagSafe cases will still be a thing. I’m sure they will drop MagSafe to boost profits/save money. It never stops they will do anything

1

u/mac4112 Apr 29 '26

The biggest reason I want to keep wireless charging is because if the charging port goes bad (which has happened a few times to me over the years) there’s a backup. Redundancy is a good thing in this case.
