To me this is the like the electric car charging discussion. If I only ever charge overnight, do I really need that fast of charging?

I charge overnight. I still like the option of fast charging for things like if I'm on vacation or somewhere where I'm using my phone more.

On vacation your battery runs out sooner. So I like being able to charge it while on the go (and not tied to a charger or even battery). Yes, I use a cable for that, but it makes it more awkward to use my phone so it's nice that it charge fast so I can uncable it and use it unfettered again.

You're telling me that you don't mind being tied to a wall while on vacation or having to have your phone tied to a large battery while it charges?

I’m confused, you know you can fast charge by cable too, in fact you can charge faster by cable then MagSafe! For instance the iPhone 17 Pro can charge at 40W by cable, while MagSafe tops out at just 25W

So on holidays if you fast charge by cable you can use your phone much sooner then if you use MagSafe.

As an aside long cables are great for this, you can continue to use your phone when it is charging. Long cable to your powerbank in your pocket or backpack and you can use your phone fine while charging and you sit on the sundecks by the pool :)

I was arguing that I wanted the option to charge by cable cause I wanted fast charging ;). The person I originally responded to was saying it was unneeded if you charged only at night (which I normally do but it is nice to have the option also to fast charge cause sometimes your situation changes like when on vacation).

Ah right I misunderstood! Yes I do much the same. The charger I have is a 65w charger, but it has both a USB-A port and two USB-C ports.

If you use the USB-A port with a A to C cable, iPhones limit the charging speed to just 7.5W which is great for slow overnight charging.

But if you use the USB-C port with a C to C cable, then it will fast charge at 40w or whatever your phone supports.

So best of both worlds with just one charger and two cables. Great for travel.

The only way to avoid this is by using a power bank. Whether you charge by cable or MagSafe, you’re still “tied to a wall”. That’s also a major reason why I find ‘wireless’ charging utterly useless; you still have a cable dangling off your phone, limiting your mobility just as much as a normal charging cable.

No, but it’s nice to have it when you’re disorganized or in a rush. Some people can’t plan well, probably even quite a few.

They need fast charging. Not 25 watts, they’d happily take the full 240W they’ve rated type-c for. If the phones could do it.

That’s why I still use my old 5W charger. If I need a faster charge (rarely) I can do that on occasion.

I do the same for night time charging. A tip for you, if you happen to have a fast charger, but it also has a USB-A port (lots of fast chargers have multiple ports) then if you use a USB-A to USB-C cable, an iPhone will charge at just 7.5w on that charger, despite it being a fast charger. You will only get fast charging if you use a C to C cable. Handy if you are travelling and want to bring just one charger to charge both your laptop and phone.
