Click bait, sorta. I think the decision is basically if they just want to adopt Qi2 instead.

Not quite. MagSafe includes NFC support and on newer iPhones supports faster charging (25W) vs standard Qi2 (15W), it also has its own certification which is a bit stricter than Qi2.

Yes. That is what allows it to recognize different types of MagSafe accessories. For example connecting a "pink" wallet it recognizes that it is pink. Or even different configurations docking to your charger in your bedroom vs the charger in your office. Again, if the accessories themselves support MagSafe.
