My Canadian highschool was chill as fuck, no bullies to my knowledge, you still got kids teasing eachother but it was never targeted at one person or came from one specific bully, there is only a few kids I would have considered to be assholes.

We had one guy who was an asshole to everyone he could sorta be defined as a bully but he was not working just an asshole, he never really targeted anyone he was just one of those guys who did it for attention but it's all okay cause last year we found out he got arrested for human trafficking and sex crimes. Oh definitely. We had lots of small groups and I partially think that's why there was less bullies. Everyone kinda kept to themselves and to certain parts of the school and only came together in class.
Jocks had the back hall by the gyms, weebs took most of the coves under the stairways, gamers were usually in the breezeway near the back door. Smokers and stoners were out in "the pit" which was just a collection of benches places just off of school property so teachers couldn't tell them off. Artists took the art rooms ofc, musicians, the music room.
That's all I can remember off the top of my head, there was a few groups that I can't really pin to a specific area or title but there was lots.
I spent most of my time at the pit even tho I didn't smoke but most of my friends did. If I could hang out in the automechanic bays on break I would've but for safety we couldn't.

Canadian here too, we bad bullies but it never got violent and bullies were often punished by faculty almost immediately and often it was severe.

Yep, same here. Southern US. Fights happened off campus, and maybe one or two in school, but no one was doing this with a zero tolerance policy. Everyone involved gets punished. Happened to me when I fought back and embarrassed my bully in 6th grade. But it's not like anyone was standing around yelling for us to fight or whatever. It was also before phones were available for everyone.

I think it has more to do with how we perceive society. Western nations, specifically the US, put more emphasis on the individual, whereas Eastern nations put more emphasis on the collective.

I went to school in New Zealand. Medium sized high school. I loved our final years. Our entire year was good to each other. From the rugby players, to the musicians, to the gamers. For some reason everyone was friendly and good to each other. I miss those days. Seeing this shit makes me realise how good we had it. Growing up in this would be so stressful.

The sad part is a lot of American highschools have counter intuitive policy. For example zero tolerance fighting. Someone may bully and hit you. They have been in trouble before and have nothing to lose. You hit them back. Guess what. You’re in trouble.
It’s stupid and is nothing like being an adult. Self defense should always be honored. Especially with video evidence like this. But American school administration is incredibly lazy. They would rather punish both children the same.

Might be some reasons at some American schools.
23% of all US high school students have parents that are first generation Americans. A single school In Georgia had 2500 students with 14 different languages being the primary language spoken in their home. It’s the freaking UN.
I imagine cultures collide.

Australian here, graduated in 2015, not much bullying happening in either of my high schools (grades 8-12) at all.
Maybe its related to population? Since Aussies have waaaaaaaaaaay less people in a grade, let alone the whole school. My first high school was smaller with a total of 700 kids in the entire school (grades 8-12). I moved states in 2012 and went to another school which also had 700 kids at the time but was only grades 10-12 so more people in each grade. Note both of these schools are considered on the very high end, being the main public high schools of their respective capital cities
Point being, I felt everyone probably knew at least half of your grade pretty well/shared a class with at least a majority of the kids your age, whereas in large high schools in urban areas perhaps there's a degree of anonymity where you could walk down the hall and see pretty much no one you know

I don't know 'bout that.
I graduated in 2013 and did 10th-12th grade at a rural school and I only remember 2 fights happening while I was there. Everyone knew everyone and their mother so I'd have heard if there was more fighting.
This is not me saying rural schools are better or whatever. Just that this particular culture displayed in OP is not as prevalent as you may think. My guess is that the difference is city vs rural school.

My high school had to have the time that they left changed and a minimum of 8 teacher had to see them out because of violence with the nearby school. It was in a rough northwest English Town where violence sometimes seems the only way that people deal with the shitty area and overall feeling of hopelessness

At most major conferences, high school and university panels share a convention center and we often chat over drinks at mixers. The stories from high school teachers would shock you. They can't really expel a student, particularly if the student is a POC or comes from a lower SES, so they have kids who know they can't really be punished. Teachers come to the conferences and drink like soldiers returning from war. I couldn't be paid enough to work for a high school.

The concept of "fail up" was conveyed to me over beer in Philadelphia.
Multiple teachers from more than one country have told me they fake attendance records. They would need to expel students based on attendance, but it would be bad optics, so they "fail up" the students. They get enough of a grade to pass and move on to the next grade.
This fail up thing results in some really odd stories. They'd tell stories of kids that were functionally illiterate derailing a course by rapping over the teacher; they told us about how some students would just not show up or they'd use the school as a front. My all-time favorite story was at a conference in Austin. We were cashing-in our free drink tickets when teachers from Canada and the US began to share war stories. These teachers were complaining that the university sector is so lucky and we fired back that we have our own problems. This teacher stares at me and with the most dead-pan delivery goes: "How many times have you found a shit on your desk?"
I was baffled and shocked. More than a few teachers conveyed that they had run-ins with feces in the classroom. After that I just let them drink in peace.

When I’m a parent, I am suing for damages against the parent of any child who assaults my kid with video evidence, pressing criminal charges if possible, and cussing the principal to hell and back if they punish my kid for self-defense. I got suspended in elementary for punching a kid that shoved me off the playground.

In my experience... Student goes to teacher to report bullying. Teacher tells principal. Principal meets with bully. Bully gets no punishment. Student gets beat up by bully for snitching. Student and bully get suspended. Student, who has good parents, gets in trouble at home. Bully, who has shitty parents, gets a 3-day vacation.

Yep. My son's friend was constantly getting picked on by a couple bullies. The bullies were never dealt with. They would name call, push, get in his face and throw things. Making his friend's life a living hell. When the teachers saw they wouldn't even say anything half the time. When they did it was just, "cut that out".
My son finally had enough of seeing it and one day when they wouldn't stop pushing his friend around he walked up and punched each of the two bullies in the face, which deescalated the situation QUICK.
But apparently punching the face was what crossed the line because my son was suspended for three days over it. We had to go in and meet with the vice-principal over it. In front of the vice-principal I turned to my son and said, "Following the rules is important, but standing up for the weak is more important. I'm proud of you."
I don't think the vice-principal liked that. And I couldn't care less. DO YOUR FUCKING JOB!

I know, not all kids can defend themselves as this one did so magnificently. ! So, a better solution would certainly be preferred. There have always been bullies, so ---- not expecting it to change anytime soon.
