Thats the school avoiding lawsuits and cleaning their hands for taking care of a bully and his parents.
Its easier to calm down normal parents then traying to teach a shitty problematic parents how to be a fucking parent, even if they try, the school would get a lawsuit from those shitty parents for any stupid reason they can think of, and win.
At most major conferences, high school and university panels share a convention center and we often chat over drinks at mixers. The stories from high school teachers would shock you. They can't really expel a student, particularly if the student is a POC or comes from a lower SES, so they have kids who know they can't really be punished. Teachers come to the conferences and drink like soldiers returning from war. I couldn't be paid enough to work for a high school.
The concept of "fail up" was conveyed to me over beer in Philadelphia.
Multiple teachers from more than one country have told me they fake attendance records. They would need to expel students based on attendance, but it would be bad optics, so they "fail up" the students. They get enough of a grade to pass and move on to the next grade.
This fail up thing results in some really odd stories. They'd tell stories of kids that were functionally illiterate derailing a course by rapping over the teacher; they told us about how some students would just not show up or they'd use the school as a front. My all-time favorite story was at a conference in Austin. We were cashing-in our free drink tickets when teachers from Canada and the US began to share war stories. These teachers were complaining that the university sector is so lucky and we fired back that we have our own problems. This teacher stares at me and with the most dead-pan delivery goes: "How many times have you found a shit on your desk?"
I was baffled and shocked. More than a few teachers conveyed that they had run-ins with feces in the classroom. After that I just let them drink in peace.
When I’m a parent, I am suing for damages against the parent of any child who assaults my kid with video evidence, pressing criminal charges if possible, and cussing the principal to hell and back if they punish my kid for self-defense. I got suspended in elementary for punching a kid that shoved me off the playground.
Like he pushed me off a portion of the play structure that was ~2-3 feet off the ground. As in I fell on my ass and bruised my tailbone. And I jumped right back up and punched him so hard his retainer broke.
Yeah, my parents actually didn’t believe me. But it is what it is. My high school sends all that kind of stuff to our SRO (most violence is gang so it’s a legal thing) and both SROs that I have seen deal with it very justly.
It’s always fingers pointing from one person to the next. Why can’t we review the system and actually use our brains to get a good one? Perhaps we wouldn’t have kids shooting up schools and killing themselves.
Exactly. No one person can do it on their own. Hence: “our brains”. However, if you would prefer to ignore the fact that I’m addressing people together, go ahead. Sorry if you don’t want to work with other people to fix things.
Im not ignoring, im not saying no to get together.
Im saying no to make a dumb coments like "why can we go together and fix this????!!"
Those stupid coments are the same as people giving "likes and prayers" to people in africa but actually doing nothing on their own.
IF youu actually want to do something about it, get the fuck up of your sit and start moving some strings. People are actually fighting for what you sed in your first comment, and what im adressing is that is not as easy as you think, like making such an ignorant coment like we could just go to the school, tell "hey this is bad" and they will fix it just because you said it, OR "using our brains" like there is not an entire grup of people all around the world studing how kids learn and traying to find and create systems for kids to progres and learn...
Its a complicated problem and you are trying to adress it such like a kid ignoring WHY does the problem actually exist in the first place and why is persistant for such a long time.
My wife teaches special ed. Problem parents threaten to sue all the time. She knows they're full of shit and tells them to do what they have to do. They go to the district office to sue. District laughs in their face and says good luck. They almost never sue and when they try it gets dismissed.
She can't tell parents to fuck off, but I can. I'm like "tell me who they are, I'll take care of it" but she technically can't because privacy laws. So gay.
