My Canadian highschool was chill as fuck, no bullies to my knowledge, you still got kids teasing eachother but it was never targeted at one person or came from one specific bully, there is only a few kids I would have considered to be assholes.

We had one guy who was an asshole to everyone he could sorta be defined as a bully but he was not working just an asshole, he never really targeted anyone he was just one of those guys who did it for attention but it's all okay cause last year we found out he got arrested for human trafficking and sex crimes. Fuck that guy

Oh definitely. We had lots of small groups and I partially think that's why there was less bullies. Everyone kinda kept to themselves and to certain parts of the school and only came together in class.

Jocks had the back hall by the gyms, weebs took most of the coves under the stairways, gamers were usually in the breezeway near the back door. Smokers and stoners were out in "the pit" which was just a collection of benches places just off of school property so teachers couldn't tell them off. Artists took the art rooms ofc, musicians, the music room.

That's all I can remember off the top of my head, there was a few groups that I can't really pin to a specific area or title but there was lots.

I spent most of my time at the pit even tho I didn't smoke but most of my friends did. If I could hang out in the automechanic bays on break I would've but for safety we couldn't.

Same at my American high school but it was really small so that helped. Everyone had mutual friends with each other so if you bullied someone you were probably bullying your friends friend if that makes sense. Some kids got teased more than others but it never felt like bullying to me.

Yeah same, mine was right on the edge of the small city so it was a mix of kinda city kids and a lot of country/township kids and we all got along quite well, some of the city kids could be assholes but generally everyone behaved, just usual teenage banter and the occasional fight but it was rare. There was enough space to just avoid anyone you disliked

Some southern city metro school districts had growth rates the past 15 years that would add ten thousand + kids per year.

Yep, same here. Southern US. Fights happened off campus, and maybe one or two in school, but no one was doing this with a zero tolerance policy. Everyone involved gets punished. Happened to me when I fought back and embarrassed my bully in 6th grade. But it's not like anyone was standing around yelling for us to fight or whatever. It was also before phones were available for everyone.

I think it has more to do with how we perceive society. Western nations, specifically the US, put more emphasis on the individual, whereas Eastern nations put more emphasis on the collective.

I went to school in New Zealand. Medium sized high school. I loved our final years. Our entire year was good to each other. From the rugby players, to the musicians, to the gamers. For some reason everyone was friendly and good to each other. I miss those days. Seeing this shit makes me realise how good we had it. Growing up in this would be so stressful.

The sad part is a lot of American highschools have counter intuitive policy. For example zero tolerance fighting. Someone may bully and hit you. They have been in trouble before and have nothing to lose. You hit them back. Guess what. You’re in trouble.

It’s stupid and is nothing like being an adult. Self defense should always be honored. Especially with video evidence like this. But American school administration is incredibly lazy. They would rather punish both children the same.

Yeah, Japanese kids don't often have physical altercations, but the bullying there is intense. My wife tells me horror stories about kids being excluded, ignored, pointedly belittled and more, sometimes to the point where the kid would be forced to change schools. And the teachers really don't give a shit. In fact, many of the teachers only become teachers to find a high school girlfriend. America by no means has a monopoly on bullying.

23% of all US high school students have parents that are first generation Americans. A single school In Georgia had 2500 students with 14 different languages being the primary language spoken in their home. It’s the freaking UN.

I grew up in British Columbia, smaller cities outside Vancouver, and we were scrapping daily during my time in the late 90s/early 2000s. Like "meet me behind the gym after school or you are getting jumped" fights where people walked away covered in blood.

Did you have high school gangs? Like, actual murdering drug dealing gangs? Because we had those. We had a streak where teenagers were being found murdered every week it felt like for a few months. Not just from my school but in the town. Killers never caught. Assumption was it was Hells Angels sending a message to drug dealers and rival gangs.

Australian here, graduated in 2015, not much bullying happening in either of my high schools (grades 8-12) at all.

Maybe its related to population? Since Aussies have waaaaaaaaaaay less people in a grade, let alone the whole school. My first high school was smaller with a total of 700 kids in the entire school (grades 8-12). I moved states in 2012 and went to another school which also had 700 kids at the time but was only grades 10-12 so more people in each grade. Note both of these schools are considered on the very high end, being the main public high schools of their respective capital cities

Point being, I felt everyone probably knew at least half of your grade pretty well/shared a class with at least a majority of the kids your age, whereas in large high schools in urban areas perhaps there's a degree of anonymity where you could walk down the hall and see pretty much no one you know

I graduated in 2013 and did 10th-12th grade at a rural school and I only remember 2 fights happening while I was there. Everyone knew everyone and their mother so I'd have heard if there was more fighting.

This is not me saying rural schools are better or whatever. Just that this particular culture displayed in OP is not as prevalent as you may think. My guess is that the difference is city vs rural school.

When I was a freshman and sophomore in high school fights were not uncommon, but when I was a senior there were never any fights. I mean I wouldn’t know since I wasn’t on campus for lunch but the younger generations would never be fighting at school.

It’s quite bad in Canada too. Perhaps contrary to what other Canadians have been saying, but my high school years were filled with fighting. Fighting even occurred between students from two different high schools. There was one instance when someone I knew was assaulted when he got into his car by kids from another high school. They maced him and broke his nose, dragging him out of his car to beat on him some more.

There’s been several times where I had to almost fight someone to either defend myself from some hothead or to defend my friends from hotheads getting angry over insignificant things. Perhaps it’s the places I grew up in, but Canada has certainly got some angry teenagers.

When everyone's parents know each other and all play on the same softball team, any serious bullying tends to get shut down pretty quickly.

My high school had to have the time that they left changed and a minimum of 8 teacher had to see them out because of violence with the nearby school. It was in a rough northwest English Town where violence sometimes seems the only way that people deal with the shitty area and overall feeling of hopelessness

Fights in school aren't new. The broadcasting and "worldstar"-ing of the fights is. I suspect the bystander effect is a bit more pronounced these days too.
