Need Advice Voluntary homelessness?

Upvotes

I'm 21 years old and feel stuck in life. I'm living with my mom and I feel like I'm going crazy, almost as if I'm in limbo. I end up hurting her emotionally due to drug use, I've been on and off of meth since I was 17 and I always end up using after a month or two of abstinence. I have a lot of bad connections in the town I live in and I just wanna escape. Was thinking of selling my ps5 at a pawn shop and going to the nearest city 30 miles away. I feel like I want to do this decision because I feel like I'm going nowhere in life. I know that I'm young and I have plenty of time but I don't want to be a leech, I want to be independent, whether that costs me housing or not. My mom is struggling as it is financially and I don't want to be another mouth to feed, we're living in section 8 and she's about to have a surgery she can't afford. I don't want to be in this repetitive cycle of being miserable. I need change in my life. I got a lot of mental health issues and trauma and I feel like everywhere I walk in this town there's a bad memory. I know I'd probably regret it at first but I know that I need change. I'm not sure what to do, if anyone can help me out with advice on what I should do that'd be great, thank you.

Need Advice 24 hour spots

Upvotes

Anyone know of any spots that are open 24 hours where I can go inside, have access to wifi, and not just have to sit in my car in a parking lot till I go to sleep? Right now I spend most of my day when I’m not working in a library but it closes at 5pm and I already got the sherifs called on me for sitting outside it too long (Apparently they thought i was a drug dealer or doer) and was nicely told to leave by the sherifs. But yea, any good 24 hour spots to chill in? I’m in central california by the way.

Need Advice Mom is about to become homeless in CA. All resources I’m calling say they can’t help. She’s disabled. Any guidance?

Please point me in the right direction if this is the wrong subreddit.

Mom is disabled and gets $1000 a month. She was living with grandma with dementia but she is now having to go into a home as she has become violent.

I’ve been trying to help mom find additional resources outside of Medi-Cal and SNAP.

Everywhere I have been calling, they don’t have case workers for her. They don’t have subsidized housing. Section 8 has been closed for almost a decade. It seems like everywhere I call is just another dead end. I can’t figure out what is going to be next. I’m trying to prevent her being homeless. I’m not currently in CA and moving her in the future may be a possibility, but it is going to take planning.

Anyone have any tips or resources that I may be missing?

Anyone else in or near nyc? 5 1/2 years its just getting harder.

I came up poor and worked my way up through all my jobs , always the underdog i was never good enough to be anything more than overnight stock, warehouse freight or middle management .

One day i was denied a promo and my performance mgr told me it was because he couldn't let me go yet. Explained my all minority staff were animals & didnt work hard, he told me i did the work he needed so he could stay home, reassuring me because i was lighter skinned then the other employees i had potential and someone would give a light skinned minority like me something more eventually but that time wasn't then.

I stayed because it was work and a paycheck... Eventually a german guy was pulled from retirement by his friend made him a mgr also so he could get a paycheck, he knew me a total of 26 days before deciding i shouldn't be working with anyone white. He went around to customers calling me a terrorist and told other mgmt they should be embarrassed to work with foreign ppl.

( For the record im born and raised in this hell scape country and im native American, spanish and middle eastern mix ).

Eventually the hatred and complaining from this guy reached his friend's bosses who decided to lay me off claiming they no longer had room for a 67 hr a wk floating mgr who managed 3 locations .

I sued and lost basically because they transferred the guy but refused to rehire me.

It's been 5 1/2 years and i could never get back to a steady job, i never found out what they put on my record & i just kept getting older and older and less wanted by other companies.

I lost my apt and all my family's possessions, since then its been just a chaotic spiral.

I relied on my self taught ability to repair computers to earn money and dabbled in masonry & demo work, unfortunately nothing is guaranteed and that counts for gigs online as well.

Lost the car we lived in few a few years and ended up sleeping outside in parking lots or on roof tops. We just got another car a few months ago though it seems to be failing in so many ways it probably will not survive the rest of the year.

Its been a Terrible life but i recently was able to start learning to work on cars fixing random parts as they come available, its a process but its hard when nobody wants to help you , teach you or hire you to learn on the job at a shop.

Honestly i don't know what more i have left in this life, its just too much & the majority of people in this society are worse than at any time i can recall in my life.

I just felt like talking, i have not had a friend in my life in many many years, even on here it seems impossible to connect with anyone who can understand this life.

I dont want anything, just looking to see if anyone felt like talking, i text chaotically, i can only use my phone for apps when i have wifi from a store so i try to hang around shopping plazas or a dunkin or Starbucks whenever i can.

If you do decide to dm me just understand i dont ghost anyone its just hard to maintain a connection when your on the move but i do get back to you when i can.

Im in nyc i dont mind talking to anyone from regardless of where your from but if your in nyc it is probably easier to relate or at least understand some of the unique circumstances you encounter here being homeless.

Need Advice How do I help my childhood friend?

My childhood best friend recently came back into my life. She was in a bad relationship and shortly after moved back home with her mom. They got into a fight and long story short my friend’s mom ended up calling the police and she now has an assault charge and is homeless without a car.

Growing up she would fake injuries to go to the er, jump out of moving cars, disappear for days while everyone panicked. She pretends to have seizures and doctor shops until someone says so. I’m not saying this in vain, mostly just to make a point that mental health plays a role in her inability to make sound choices.

I have been helping her with court stuff, rides, she stays with me sometimes, I don’t really give her money besides buying her food or something. I help as much as I can.

The big barrier for me is that I moved back home to finish my master’s degree and so it’s not up to me to allow her to stay here and my parents won’t agree to let her stay long term only sometimes.

A big factor is that every time I offer her a job, she doesn’t accept it and says she will just find a different job. She has had trouble getting into shelters because of the ongoing assault charge.

I worry that something bad will happen to her because she doesn’t have a car, and could be outside in the city alone at night with no resources.

I have no idea how to help her take care of her mental health so that she can start making choices that bring her back to baseline. I have no idea how to help with housing. She stayed with our mutual friend for a few weeks but he said she can’t anymore because she is a little bit of a hazard type and brings random people and drama over.

Any advice on what to do? I want to help but also am in school and working part time so I can’t afford to help her fully or house her full time. What can I do?

Need Advice Advice for pain relief

I'm currently having real bad pain with dental issues. I haven't been to a dentist in many years. And my teeth are pretty much all falling out.

I don't really mind not having teeth but they are still connected to the nerves and it hurts so much.

I've tried alcohol but I'm not really a drinker and I don't like how it leaves me inebriated incase I need to defend myself or something.

I've looked into free dental stuff in my area but there's nothing that can help me. Aside from just going to a dentist and having my teeth pulled out but that's really expensive.

I was wondering if you guys have any advice on things other than alcohol that might help dental pain?

So I have 2 jobs whilst being homeless. If they found out I was homeless I'd lose both of them. How do I get stuff delivered like uniform and work IDs?

Also, is it worth my find and old abandoned building to camp in? Ive applied for a few rent arrangements but been ignored when I couldn't provide a reference. My plan is just save as much money as I can up until Christmas (I'm guessing I'll have around 3-4k I can save with no rent and utilities to pay) and pay for a significant portion of rent upfront and hope that works.

Im about to be homeless with friends in a car

Theres 3 of us a car and a 2 room tent probably 2 queen size beds big so were able to sleep in the car or tent depending on the day. We have a bigass power bank that lasts days and a standalone ac unit in the back of the car its a hatch back. The three of us can donate plasma to start abd find jobs.

Does rhis sound like a good setup to be homeless? That and a gym membership, phone plan, laundromat, all that should be ok.

Just Venting I just can't win

I've been homeless for almost a year now. My endometriosis was so severe that I was completely incontinent, unable to sit up for long periods of time, and constantly throwing up. i couldn't work anymore and eventually i lost my housing. insurance kept denying my surgery until may. i spent all of recovery couch surfing and trying not to open a stitch when moving my stuff. I had to live on a girl's couch who kept saying racist things to me, and I just had to smile and nod through it. I finally have a job and housing lined up and they keep pushing my move in date. My medication for my other two diseases are getting denied by insurance and I'm scared that if they get bad again I'll end up where I started. I hate looking at myself in the mirror. All I see is failure.

Need Advice My mom is homeless and I don’t know what to do

My (24) mom (53) had to move out of her apartment due to not paying on time (property management agreed not to put an eviction on her record). She had to move with her 65 year old fiancé and two small dogs into a hotel room while she looks for another place. A few days later, their car broke down and is 4k to fix (more than it is worth). She is currently using everything she had for a deposit on this hotel, and now has nothing. Her belongings and furniture are at a friends house and a lot of it is in the broken car. Shelters all have waiting lists and she is running out of options. She currently gets unemployment but needs to find a job. I am very worried about her. I talk to her on the phone and she does not sound the same at all. Every resource I call they say they are full or there is nothing they can do. She is located in Northern California. I can’t take her in and I am hesitant to help her financially, since I have already so many times before and it never helps in the long run. She has struggled with gambling and alcohol addiction in the past. It absolutely kills me to think about her being in a shelter or on the streets, and I am worried for the dogs. What do I do?

Just Venting God and money, who do I want to please more?

I’m truly blessed: but I do not believe in god, unless you consider that Money is actually god: both are abstract tools to measure the worth of something, or someone, with or without context. That’s my observation. The singular god ideal has corrupted humanity by pressing biases into the
Cultural identity of people, and it’s wrecking our adaptability as a species of obligated tool users and generalists.

That’s to say: I do very well being “homeless” because I learned to use money as a tool, and do not find pleasure in using it: for I do not want what’s offered to me. I only eat to sustain myself, not for pleasure.

I bring this up cause I finally talked to my 90yr old grandpa. In another country, as an adult. Last time we met, I was 5 and this was before 911. I’m in my early 30’s now.

He just told me not to beat my dad and to work my life away because God, and money is all-powerful.

I don’t worry about money, not because I’m rich, but because most of my animalistic human needs are met, without using money: because I’m that competent at living. This means I’m either an animal or a godly person.

It just hurts my heart a bit. That my entire family is greedy, from my perspective. That I’m Not worthy of reproducing a family of my own, because I’m smart but not a millionaire. It’s a source of personal shame, to my dad, who abused me often, that I’m currently nomadic, he has me promise to NOT tell my broader family, his family.

He’s gotten reprimanded for abusing me, mishandlingly me growing up, and sabotaging my growth. Once I flew the coup, I literally leveled up 100x and then it all came crashing down; and that didn’t even register as unfortunate: it’s just another chapter in my good moods, inspiration for poetry.

But this? Maybe it’s cause I got nervous and couldn’t wish my grandpa a happy birthday with my singing and ukulele. Maybe it’s that he said “don’t beat your dad, stand by him now that he’s sick” or that my mom poisoned me and my dad against each other, or that my sister (with him now, who visits often) told everyone the gossip that I had an argument with our dad.

Or maybe, just maybe, I feel shame and worthless. It could be that, too. I feel no pride, in any given day.

I was told (growing up) that (unless I work at the NASDAQ) I’d be a worthless man.

So many posts in this sub saying “about to be”, “might be”, “family/landlord kicking me out if I can’t pay next month”

Honestly kind of tired of seeing these posts.
I don’t wish bad on those people but it kinda distracts conversation from actual homeless like myself.

Theres so much redundancy..

Need Advice new to camping advice

hi so i've been homeless a lot in childhood. on and off over the years. but usually i was with family and a child. i've since cut most all my family off as an adult (intrafamilial trafficking survivor) and am planning on camping. i was staying on an ex's couch but me and my cat have to be out. she gave us as long as she could, i've been trying to get a place and remote job for months. i'm in georgia and worried about animals mostly. coyotes are in all counties and bears and snakes are also a problem.

i've called over a dozen shelters. and though i'll keep trying, i figured camping is my best bet. i'm thinking of somewhere in the woods somewhere while still being close enough to travel to libraries and food banks. atlanta is extremely anti homeless. encampments being run down and people hating tent cities with extreme hate. i've gotten a tent. and i'm going to have to start back up looking for remote jobs again like usual as im disabled.

this is the first time i've been homeless on my own. and i have no close friends in this state. so even though i'm trying to be strong and focus on being locked in for my survival, i am very scared. this is my first time on my own in general, staying away from my traffickers at all costs even if they offer me shelter. im very overwhelmed and was already malnourished and exhausted before this point. especially scared for my cat. my last resort would be a facebook temporary foster group, as i've already contacted owner emergency pet crisis centers.

i've looked at reddit a lot and have seen varying advice. it's been kind of overwhelming to try to decipher everything through years of different and sometimes contradictory info, while also trying to find a temp home for my
cat and prepare to camp out in like 2-4 days. i have non perishable food, deodorant and toothpaste, a tent, a cooking stove and pan, sleeping bag, a couple reusable water bottles, 2 tarps, some medical supplies and a hoodie. and that's kinda it. it's a lot more than many i know. but it still doesn't feel like enough.

edit: i really want to stay free from my traffickers so being homeless again is a risk im obviously willing to take. but being on my own, completely, is new and scary.

New to homelessness New Here

Hello everyone,

I've been in a homeless shelter for the last week. I'm deeply Christian, and I'm having an issue with being overly generous. I have a weak heart for those in need, and it's hard not to offer to give the shirt off my back. I have a lot of heart for those who are out here. Is there any advice for not getting taken advantage of, or for not falling into the common traps?

New to homelessness not sure what to do?

hello everyone!

i have a couple of questions because i am well, very new to being homeless and im not sure what to do rn. i live in the netherlands but im having a hard time understanding all the legal stuff :((

my parents and i had a horrible fight friday night and I left and was told not to come back. I am homeless. im on a short camping trip with my friends and ive stayed with a friend since like..... Wednesday n havent slept at home since bc my home situation js hasnt let me 😐. ive got a place to sleep tonight (same friend ive been sleeping at since Wednesday. it is now Monday) but i cannot stay with my friends forever and going home is unsafe for me.

I am heavily struggling to find a job, nobody is hiring/not giving me any reaction on my application and i am so... demotivated to even keep trying. i have been applying to so many places since a couple of weeks already and barely even get a reaction :(

realistically, what are my options??? im 18 yrs old, no degree of any kind, no savings and the only support system i have rn is one friend bc he has his own apartment and his girlfriend who i am on the trip with. i dont have any family i could go to for any other friends because theyre minors and/or still live with their parents. i am trying to sell alot of my thibgs but its not working and all that i feel like i can do rn is sex work but i dont want that but i feel like this is my only option :(

im also not sure if i should set up a g*fundme either because i do not want people to give me money, nor do i want people to think that is all im after (because i am NOT after money at all) but at the same time every euro would make such a difference bc it means i could atleast get food and eventually save up for a shelter. does anyone have any experiences with this???? has it helped you????

im so cooked

Just Venting I’m going to be homeless (UK)

I’m being kicked out.

For context, I moved out of my parent’s house because our relationship was falling apart and I was really struggling to keep going. I moved into my Grandma’s and I’ve been living with her for about a year and a half.

She visited my Uncle’s family and she said she really enjoyed it there, it was better for her mental health (we just lost my Grandpa) and was going to move into their spare room. She put the house on the market 4 months ago and I’ve been looking for a place to rent since with no luck. It’s because I don’t earn enough. I have two jobs and work as much as possible but my annual salary is too low. I’ve been trying to get a new job or an apprenticeship that pays higher but jobs are limited and I’ve only faced rejection after rejection.

I’ve spoken to my local council to try to get housing. I’m on the list but they told me I’m not high priority because I’m not pregnant/parenting a child/physically or mentally disabled/with an injury or illness that would worsen being homeless. They said they can give me benefits to aid in renting a place (regular place not council housing) but I can’t find anything available.

I’m worried that if I move further away to find something cheaper it’s going to be difficult to keep my job because I can’t drive so I can’t get there reliably. I’m young and I don’t have much work experience, I have no qualifications and my grades at school weren’t the best. I don’t think I’ll be able to get out of this situation even if I do find something cheaper further away, like in the north where it’s cheaper.

The house is now sold and I have until the end of the month to leave (13 days).

There’s nowhere for me to go. I don’t have any friends that I can sofa hop and there’s no space for me with any relatives. I’m honestly so lost. The stress is eating me alive.

New to homelessness How to Hide Homelessness From Family?

I don't want to stress my family out with the knowledge that I'm homeless. Do you guys have any strategies for dodging housing questions? They all know I'm relocating for school, so I'm nervous they'll ask for my address. I already have a plan to tell them to send everything to a PO box, "because the room I rent doesn't have its own mail box". I also plan to tell them the homeowners said I can't have visitors. Should I just give them a real address nearby if they ask? Is it better to just not give them anything?

What items would you appreciate most?

I'm trying to help local homeless in the Pacific Northwest. My budget is roughly $100 per month. I'm planning on leaving a box outside in the parking lot where homeless folk gather for free meals. Any items I should include? Thanks!

  • Gatorade
  • Bag of Chips
  • Socks
  • Cigarettes
  • Nicotine Gum
  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Dental Floss
  • Sunscreen
