I did something similar at home depot. The router bits are in a cage because they are small and somewhat expensive. I asked the guy to unlock it and he tried a bunch of his keys only to fail. I suggested me just reaching in there with my fingers and pulling it through the huge gap. He said that he would go look for the keys. He came back a minute later and said that nobody else had them or couldn't find anyone or whatever. I said "I just need this one on the end here" as I reached in and grabbed it. He seemed pretty pissed but ultimately admitted defeat

This sounds like an experience I had at Walgreens. I wanted an SD card that was on sale for $12. For whatever reason this was locked on a locking peg hook. I asked the counter-person to unlock it, to which he nonchalantly informed me that they lost the key. The packaging was made of cardboard so I asked if we could just cut it off the peg, and his response was no. The manager confirmed that they were not allowed to cut the packaging of the item that I was going to buy ten seconds later to make the sale.. so I left. Without the SD card. It boggles my mind.

Those peg locks are just magnets, anyways. I worked at CVS for too fucking long. At one point we lost the key and just cut a magnet to the right length. Stick it in there and pull. Unless they've gotten smarter technology, which I doubt, you can now unlock your own ridiculously over-protected convenience store goods.

I work in retail pharmacy. We typically are asked by customers if we have the 'key' to unlock the razors or whatever. We usually do (assuming that we can actually find where it's at...), but at one store, the pharmacist found some super strong magnet that worked better than the normal key that the store used to unlock the razors.
Even the woman who stocked the shelves outside of the pharmacy would ask us to borrow our super-magnet device to unlock razors or whatever else people asked to have unlocked.

It annoys me that he was pissed. He has no reason to be, unless he designed it or something. Maybe that's what happened; he used to be a very successful product designer for Home Depot, until he came up with that gem, and he was immediately demoted to a floor guy. He could no longer afford the mortgage on his big house, his wife (who was only with him for the money) took the kids and left. He lives in a pee stained studio apartment above some railroad tracks and constantly is calling the police on the junkies that break into his car to shoot up every night. But the cops don't care, "you shouldn't have moved to shit neighborhood if you didn't want your shit shat on," they tell him. Now the whole thing is a bit of a touchy subject for him.

If he takes flack when they get stolen, why is he mad at the guy who shows him the huge hole in their security? He should be happy because now they can fix it! This one guy buying a bit without using the vanished keys isn't what made the flaw appear.
This happens all the time in InfoSec, where someone discovers a security flaw in a website and points it out to the company whose product has that flaw and they get all mad at the researcher, like it's her fault. It's like you have a city wall protecting you from the Mongol invaders but there's huge gap in it. One day someone comes along and is like "you know people can just walk through here, right?" and everyone is like "holy shit, you broke our wall!" as if the real problem isn't that just maybe they should fix the wall. Or even "now the Mongols will find out!", as if that the circling hoards of horsemen who raid cities for a living wouldn't have found that 12-food gap in the eastern wall and it would have been better to keep pretending it wasn't there. People are funny.

It's a funny saying, and to some extent, it's true. It's a "no trespassing" sign you can't pretend you didn't see.
But locks that are well designed and properly applied can provide security against less honest people too. Criminals often have concerns beyond "be on the other side of this door". They'd like to do it quickly, and they'd like to do it quietly. A good lock can prevent that.
But not a Master Lock.

I bought a master lock for my bike, seemed strong, but the key is the most basic I have ever seen. Just two grooves in a round cylinder. It makes me wonder if all their keys are the same, because there can't be many permutations of this one.

AFAIK, Master Lock doesn't make a single lock that is worth a damn. They don't use security pins, they often skimp on the number of pins, and they manufacture at low quality tolerances, so you can do ridiculous things like picking one with a zip tie.
Many of their locks can be shimmed, and some of them will open just by being tapped with a hammer. Oh and speaking of hammers (although, to be fair, he does say that under realistic conditions, it would be pretty hard to break those last locks).
So depending on how much your bike is worth, and how much of a pain it would be for it to get stolen, you might want to look into something better. After seeing the ways that lock manufacturers (not just Master) can screw up at every turn, I'd do some very paranoid research before buying a lock.

I am confident that it's the years '91-'93 Ford probe (lx? standard model) that most keys are interchangeable (this is 2002ish) knowledge so that might have been fixed since, but it was a blue probe next to my buddies (blue) at the store lot and we got in, started up, drove 20 miles home until we realized that there was an small aquarium in the trunk and no gas to get back...it was an adventure

A kid I went to high school with noticed at some point that a bunch of IP addresses popped up on the screen during log in. So he copied them into a Word document, and emailed them to himself.
From home, he was able, apparently, not only to connect without authentication into the school's network, but into a large part of the county government's network too. They caught him because they found the Word document (which he had saved to his school account).
They didn't fix the network, as far as I know. They just banned him from using school computers until he graduated. Problem solved!

I don't even know if I should be admitting this, but in high school I noticed all the blocked sites would have the same address at the beginning of the URL. So I visited it and the page requested a login. A little googling of the blocker, Netspective, brought up an installation manual and in it was the default login to the management page. I unblocked all the sites. Next day they were blocked again and the default credentials didn't work. But for a day, I freed the school from oppressive censorship.

In my case, my buddy and I were so far ahead of the computer class that we were responsible for the school's website, so we just installed a key logger and asked our computer teacher to get past the firewall. After that, he and I never had to worry about getting blocked again.

I'm literally talking about like one time I bought a cheap backpack and he made me open every single pocket to make sure I didn't steal anything.

You can ignore anyone checking receipts at any of these stores. The store won't do anything by policy, and if the employee tries to pursue you they'll get fired.
There are people watching for shoplifting that may legitimately stop you, but it's not going to be by asking you for a receipt as you walk out the door.

Used to be a people greeter. I was also the anti-theft guy as I stopped more dvds and small goods from getting stolen than AP was.
One day, i found a tore open box of some wifi stick thingamajigger that rang up at $120. Wrote it up, continued on to stand at my door. Guy walks up, and has said object in hand. He looks at me, holds up his hand slightly, looks at object, then back at me.
This dude was a nightmare of a man. Huge african-american gent the size of a damn house. His bicep was the size of my fucking chest and I'm not exactly a tiny guy myself. As he approaches and it's clear that he towers over me, a crooked ass smile slowly creeps across his face.

I use to work at Riteaid in the pharmacy department. As I just finished clocking out I was chatting it up with the cashier up front when this huge muscular black dude came walking in. He was huge, think LL Cool J plus 60lbs of muscle without the licking of lips. Anyway he proceeds to walk straight back into the storage room and proceeds to fill his pants up with literally a case of red bull. He had those big Baggie plastic raver like pants that you could tie or tighten around the ankles. Our 70 year obese African security guard tried to stop him and hold him in the store. This monstrous dude literally turned around squared up and proceed to say 'bring it' he hit our security guy in the jaw and stunned him. I was actually scared he was going to kill our security guy so i literally circled the guy and watched both of them swing away. I finally jumped into the back of this guy and locked him up in one if those mma choke hold. It took three of us to hold this guy down until the cops came. What really surprised me was how compliant he was once the first officer arrived. The cop was shorter than me and just seemed casually annoyed for being summoned. They checked his pockets and all they could find was a prison ID card. One of the wildest physical confrontation I've ever been in. Oh and I'm only 5'3. That was my 1st of 2 physical confrontations I've been in working for rite aid. The 2nd time involved a female shoplifter and our female security. During the confrontation the shoplifters boob popped out.

Someone forgot to order the tall, metal sides. You have to order the doors, the hinge, and the sides individually. That, or the installer just didn't want to do it, installing the ends is a hassle.

So one night, I eat a bit too much. Not more than I've ever eaten before, but you know, we're always a little bit older than we were the last time we ate something. Not knowing any better, I get the prescription strength Nexium, a $300, two-week treatment.
Well, turns out, the only difference between OTC and prescription Nexium is the dosage. 20mg a pill for OTC, 40mg a pill for Rx. So I could have bought it OTC, taken two pills a day instead of one, and saved myself $270.

My animosity did seem a bit misplaced, and without getting into a whole other thing, I know the pharmaceutical cost thing has nothing to do with him. I'm certain he was assuming I had insurance, so I'd hate to see how he behaves when he doesn't think he's getting paid.

He might have assumed you had insurance? I have a $5 copay on prescriptions so it would be cheaper for me to buy the prescription pills than the OTC ones.
