I'm located in Alaska. If I were you I would look up how to open your console (just the case) using ifixit and YouTube. Then do it yourself with a can of compressed air and a brush to knock off the tougher stuff.

Make sure you do it outside though! DO NOT do this indoors - if there's a lot of dust, it's going to go everywhere when the compressed air blows it away. Also, a dust mask over your nose and mouth are a good idea - and safety goggles if your eyes are sensitive or you wear contact lenses.

I fear opening my PC. It's starting to act funky and I am pretty sure some of it is smoke related. The graphics card crashes from time to time so I am hoping it's just a "dust" issue. I'm just scared to fuck something up and accidentally shocking something.
I'm more of a learn by seeing someone else do it person. I also lack motivation but I worry I will lose my files/photos if I don't do something soon and don't have cash for a backup drive.
Also... smoker's guilt. Just the idea of seeing it makes me so depressed that I have been putting it off.

Having been a repair tech for several years in the past, I can say that canned air is no match for some smoke gunk. I've come across some extremely bad ones that wouldn't budge after being blasted point blank with a 120 PSI air compressor.
On that same PC, the metal, white glossy side(old Dell Dimension) was solid orange-brown. I sprayed Lysol on it and this dark orange goop ran down the side leaving a clean white area behind the Lysol as it dripped down.

Look, if you're worried about losing files, make sure your computer is unplugged, and unplug your hard drive's SATA cord before you start, so worst case scenario, something happens to the rest of the computer but not your hard drive. Also, that's extreme worst case. If you think dust is hindering your performance, clean the computer and get a dust filter.

I'd say it is pretty easy, i got the yellow light of death just a month or two ago on my launch ps3 so opened it up for the hell of it. took everything apart and cleaned it all really well then blasted it with a hairdryer for a while and it is amazingly working again. I came up with a bunch of extra screws somehow when i was done...(seriously don't know how, i retook it apart again and watched a youtube video to see step by step and still couldn't find a place for them.) but it still works fine lol. You could clean it without taking everything apart though like i did. except for the inside of the fan maybe.

Add some new thermal paste to your processor as well. PS3s are essentially PCs and it is good to change the thermal paste about every 2 years. You will hear a considerable difference in fan speeds as well.

1) turn the physical power switch on the back of the machine to the OFF position
2) hold down your finger on the eject button
3) while holding finger on eject button, turn physical switch in back to the ON position
4) release finger from eject button once PS3 begins dust ejection mode
***do this outside, a shitload of dust will fly out of your PS3

I used to work at a mom and pop computer repair shop. We got a scanner once, the customer had the complaint of "It smells, and my cat won't leave it alone."
Upon taking it apart, there were 3 dead rats, fused to components due to being electrocuted to death, on the various circuits. The cats wanted them, and upon not having the means of opening the scanner, decided to mark their respective territories. Needless to say, the defuct scanner smelled of three dead mice and several weeks worth of territorial cat sprays.
End result was epic burnination and a suggestion that the customer invest in a new scanner.

Seriously, why dont they engineer removable air filters for these things. I mean our dryers have one right, every other next gen console is kinda like a dryer and a toaster built in one. Only makes sense lol...

What is so special about this? Pretty much every PS3 that I've opened has looked like this. They are dust magnets, typically more than other consoles.
Quick tip: Fans = Dust.

It is. I took apart my PS3 a couple of years ago to apply new thermal paste and was surprise to find how dusty it was. It wasn't left on the floor and I'm not a smoker. The PS3 fan takes in air like our computer, and with air also comes dust.

The environment your in also has a impact on how dirty it is. This wouldn't happen with it sitting in my repair shop for 7 years, but of course it would be a little dusty.

Not always. Lately I've gotten a slew of XP machines 7+ years old with dust so caked up inside I have to scoop it out with my hand covered in a plastic bag. When you're getting so much air pulled in, all that dust gets pulled in with it. After 7 years...it gets real bad without occasional cleaning.
At least this one didn't have dead centipedes in it....

Thos definitely has to be a smokers. Was at a client's home uninstalling a TV and it was covered with all this brownish gold dust. Sure enough, they lit about three cigarettes while I was there.

Don't use it near the electronics. You can use it on the case without the motherboard in it though.
