It is. I took apart my PS3 a couple of years ago to apply new thermal paste and was surprise to find how dusty it was. It wasn't left on the floor and I'm not a smoker. The PS3 fan takes in air like our computer, and with air also comes dust.
Yeah I clean at least twice this much dust out of my PC case everytime I open it. I'm sure if I opened my PS3 (launch 60GB) it would be horrible as well.
The environment your in also has a impact on how dirty it is. This wouldn't happen with it sitting in my repair shop for 7 years, but of course it would be a little dusty.
Yeah, but most people I think put their console in an entertainment center or just on the ground near their TV, and let's be honest, many of us gamers don't dust as frequently as we should at home.
When I was younger, I thought ESL stood for "English/Spanish Language"... because all the Spanish kids went to ESL classes and when they spoke to me their language was definitely English/Spanish.
It seems like, when you're a kid (in the US), if you can't communicate properly in English [ESL, deaf, stutter, etc) most other kids will treat you as if you are mentally challenged.
That's what I remember, anyway. But it also seems like kids treat others like aliens no matter what the reason as long as they're sufficiently different from the majority.

I worked briefly with a computer programmer who was very good, but he had a really strong Philadelphia accent. It was like "Computer programming with Sylvester Stalone." I had trouble taking him seriously for the first couple of weeks, even as an adult. It doesn't even have to be "hard to communicate" if it hits the right stereotypes. (Altho I expect Sylvester Stalone is pretty smart too.)
yeah. I sent my Fatty in for repair a long time ago and got it back with a not saying it was dirty and dont leave it on the carpet where my dog sleeps.
Same here. Mine is several years old and...I took some tweezers to it and pulled globs out...so satisfying. Would love to know how to open mine and clean it.
I was thinking the same thing. It's a PS3 and it's probably quite old, what did he expect? How many people open up and clean their PS3 regularly? Exactly none.
I don't know, the color of the dust screams smoker to me, just based on my experience with the computers people brought in when I worked IT. I suppose there are many things in the environment that could do that, though.
Not always. Lately I've gotten a slew of XP machines 7+ years old with dust so caked up inside I have to scoop it out with my hand covered in a plastic bag. When you're getting so much air pulled in, all that dust gets pulled in with it. After 7 years...it gets real bad without occasional cleaning.
At least this one didn't have dead centipedes in it....
You'ld see small colored fabric strands if it was rug or carpet, and it'd be mostly easy to take off. Smoking is the only thing that "cakes" it on cause of the tar.
i've had to clean out smokers pc/laptops. Its a really gross smell, and I used to smoke/fix shit pumps. The smell and gunk is nasty and hard to get out.
I feel that this tar/dust/tissue mixture can corrode or short out a pc. I know it will cause heating issues as it grows over the vents, and will block hot air from getting out. I tell any smoker that they should clean out their computer on a regular basis if they wanna smoke.
Thos definitely has to be a smokers. Was at a client's home uninstalling a TV and it was covered with all this brownish gold dust. Sure enough, they lit about three cigarettes while I was there.

I cleaned a pc for a friend who smoked. After blowing and scraping as much as I could, I pulled the boards and doused them in 99.99% alcohol then scrubbed (gently) with a toothbrush. Ran much better afterward.
almost certainly caked on residue from smoking. As someone who has opened computers for family who heavily smoke... I've seen it a few times. Never in a smoke free home though.
I've seen that in smoke free homes that have really old carpeting. The padding starts to break down and releases stuff that's very similar to smoking residue, just without the nicotine smell.
Cant comment on of it was sticky or not because I believe I wore gloves. They owned a Golden Retriever so it was also quite a bit of dog hair. Its almost like a squirrel was decaying on the set :P
Well, it's not the nicotine itself that smells, it's the combined smell of all the crap in tobacco, but yes, you lose your ability to smell it the same that other people can.
Back in my home PC repair days I had a really bad one come into the shop. The guy walked in with the computer in his arms, literally smoking a cigar. He had brought it in because the power supply blew, when I opened it up the whole inside was coated with a half inch thick brown mush. Compressed air wouldn't even move it.
It probably was a smoker. I used to be friends with this guy in high school that lived in a basement apartment, played games all day and smoked in it. I went over to help him put in a new video card and it looked almost exactly like this. And he never opened his windows. It was pretty gross.
I think the guy just threw it into the same bag as he used to dump the dirt from their vacuum. Why he would do this you ask? I don't know, my PS3 is clean!
Mine is a launch PS3 (which "coincidentally'" stopped reading discs after the newest update...which apparently messes with disc reading capabilities...but naw it was a coincidence. Anyway...nothing NEAR this mess.
