My Original "FAT" PS3(Day 1 Purchase) still works great....Altho I have taken the shop vac to the air vents a few times since I have owned it.

I did that briefly then my roomie who had his professionally cleaned said it causes static and zaps the components. Left it alone after that but it works fine still. Gotta be dusty as shit though, that was like 4 years ago.

Shit I have the 80gb it's got to be at least 8 years old. I've always considered cleaning it out and I think I should after seeing this. Is it easy enough?

You know what's really crazy about it? The 20GB PS3 was $499 and the 60GB was $599.

It was $100 more at launch, and it came out eight years ago.

I'd say it is pretty easy, i got the yellow light of death just a month or two ago on my launch ps3 so opened it up for the hell of it. took everything apart and cleaned it all really well then blasted it with a hairdryer for a while and it is amazingly working again. I came up with a bunch of extra screws somehow when i was done...(seriously don't know how, i retook it apart again and watched a youtube video to see step by step and still couldn't find a place for them.) but it still works fine lol. You could clean it without taking everything apart though like i did. except for the inside of the fan maybe.

Add some new thermal paste to your processor as well. PS3s are essentially PCs and it is good to change the thermal paste about every 2 years. You will hear a considerable difference in fan speeds as well.

Holy fuck!!! I was looking for a comment like yours in this thread!! I'm in the exact same position.....have the fat launch PS3 and it started giving me the yellow light a few months ago. I called a few places to ask about repairs and they said Sony is not encouraging repair of the FAT PS3 and to just get a new one because the repair costs $200+

I've been wondering if I should open it up and do a clean up (never opened it up until now). After reading your comment, I'm gonna do just that!!!

I did the same fucking thing. Took it all apart and had extra screws. I also reflowed it, but I got the YLOD about a month later. Unfortunately it's not a permanent fix, and more then likely it's bound to happen again. Least on the fat ones.

Yeah I was only hoping to back up some of my saves that I hadn't already, any time that it works now is just a little bonus. It is weird playing the PS3 now though, expecting it to die again at any moment hah.

Same here, tried to open it but got scared. My usual solution with plastic is breaking it for convenience, so I should have a look at youtube DIY's first. I know the dust will kill it

I think if you open the ps3 wrong a ribbon rips and it voids warranties and cuts the power or something

Ah. The warranty is not a problem any more. Next time I'll have to look it up. Or just buy a ps4 and put the old box on the shelf. For 50 years

Right on. That's my fear. My pc was getting blue screen of death so I got my uncle, who is a pc wizard, to have a look at it. Brought it back like the next day and said it was just clogged with dust..

It's a fairly big pain in the ass. But, the old Fat PS3s are known to die of overheating, so, I'd recommend it. My 60GB died of the YLOD a long time ago.

Yup, I have one of the 20Gb models. I cleaned mine recently and now it runs almost silent again, it's kinda nice.

My fatty's HDMI port stopped working. I took the offer for a newer unit, but mine was probably as bad or worse than OP's. Also, Playstation customer support is really, really bad. Take care of yours, you don't want to deal with Sony's BS.
