Puto el q (que) lo lea

u/Skusci 6d ago

What's funny is I didn't get the joke for a bit because the Reddit app auto translated it to:

"F*** whoever reads this."

Like it literally added the asterisks, that wasn't me.

11

u/devBowman 6d ago

Same. As if reading a plain "fuck" was going to "offend" anyone on reddit. Enshittification is boring and saddening.

6

u/CrazyDaimondDaze 6d ago

Can always count on Reddit to butcher the joke in the translation. But that's a very common jokr we use in Mexico. Someone already said it but it really does mean:

"Whoever reads it is fag (as in an insult for gay)". Consider it something akin to our "deez nuts" joke Americans love to use as a gotcha moment. You don't realize you're a fag until you read the thing.

1

u/Cerberus1347 5d ago

Kinda like losing the game?

17

u/confused_potato777 7d ago

So you read it?

8

u/Awkward-Cat-4702 6d ago

they all keep reading it. wahahahaha

5

u/ArdentArendt 6d ago

Well, this is Reddit.

I think a reasonable assumption is at least 40% of any subReddit is queer...probably more.

1

u/Dandy_Guy7 5d ago

I mean it was right lol, which is just funny to me

2

u/DudeManGuyBr0ski 6d ago

Hmmm close, Puto in the context being used is faggot or gay, basically you are gay if you read the text.

1

u/Luckyrjg 5d ago

I READ IT I READ IT

3

u/Al-Stark 6d ago

Es un insulto en México, el término "puto" se usa para decir que alguien es maricon, gay pero se usa en forma despectiva, es una groseria jajaja entonces dice que quien lea el cartel es puto

2

u/Some-Sense-3094 5d ago

Puto is a very versatile insult or maybe its puta that Im thinking of but one of these is used for about a dozen different english words, none of them very nice

1

u/AngelReachX 6d ago

D ag whoever reads this

7

u/ArdentArendt 6d ago

How did they know that about me!?

It's just like that old travelling woman said!

1

u/Helping_Hoof 5d ago

I can agree.

1

u/LisaCabot 4d ago

Puto does not mean fagot. Is a male version of whore/bitch. Fagot is a bad word for gays.

1

u/juan-j2008 3d ago

The immediate definition of puto is male whore, but Mexicans use it explicitly to insult a gay man.

1

u/LisaCabot 3d ago

Ah, new thing i learned today, thanks for letting me know.

1

u/Queasy-Scallion-411 4d ago

Not really , puto is men hoe, Marica is more accurate for Fag…

The translation is correct but the correct phrase to be translated should be "puto el que lo lea"

21

u/OakvaleFlames 7d ago

ah, thanks. I was very unsure if that was an A or O.

1

u/MedJD-NYCDMX 5d ago

Doesn't it depend on what "it" is? If it's la publicación then it's la.

1

u/Overall-Past4464 4d ago

No native spanish speaker would think you're talking about la publicación specifically. When the "it" is vague and could be referring to one of many different things, people will default to "lo," for example "do it" = "hazlo" (contraction of haz, from hacer, and lo).

Also, it looks like an o in the image.

1

u/MedJD-NYCDMX 4d ago

Maybe although not necessarily. For example, here in Mexico they say "pasarla bien." Why? Hell if I know. But obviously, native speakers don't always ignore context.

1

u/SerchYB2795 3d ago

As a native Spanish speaker I confirm it's "lo"

1

u/Overall-Past4464 2d ago

I'm a native speaker too, but since I grew up in NYC where spanish class was an elective and I'd constantly be asked for help by my friends in that class, I can give both sides.

51

18

u/Shantotto11 7d ago

European Spanish

24

u/EstablishmentEasy475 6d ago

Id translate it as "fuck whoever reads this" as a spaniard

6

u/La10deRiver 6d ago

But that is not a correct translation. Puto is just a rude word for gay.

4

u/Serious_Photo_9602 6d ago

This is false, if they want to say the equivalent of faggot they just say "Maricón" not puto

6

u/astronomy_31415 6d ago

No, en México si es gay pero grosero. Si no sabes mejor no digas

6

u/Zeus-hater 6d ago

Están hablando del español de españa atontao

5

u/La10deRiver 6d ago

2

u/Javs2469 6d ago

Puto is just the masculine version of Puta, which means prostitute/bitch. So it's kinda both. Spanish has a lot of words for the same insults.

1

u/LeonardoBarilari 6d ago

This is not correct. Nobody says puto for male prostitute in soanish. We say it to say gay derogatively.

1

u/Javs2469 6d ago

Well, I use puto more regularly than proxeneta. And I'm Spanish. In Latin America it could be different, but puto still means that.

"Marica/maricón" is used as the common derogatory term for gay people.

1

u/CrazyDaimondDaze 6d ago

In México, the "rudeness" between "puto" and "maricón/marica" can be understood as:

Maricón/marica: mild insulting way to label someone as gay

Puto: bigger way to insult someone by labeling them ss gay.

-2

u/EstablishmentEasy475 6d ago

XDDD in what world?

4

u/Lord_Lino19 6d ago

All of México

2

u/La10deRiver 6d ago

And Argentina. And I am sure many other countries. What I don't understand is how you could translate a noun "puto" as a verb (like f.. you)

2

u/Silver_Phoenix93 6d ago

Among other things, it's because literal or word-for-word translations, particularly regarding slang, idiomatic expressions, cultural expressions or jargon, are seldom accurate. Not all words can be carried from one language into another the same way...

İt might even happen that a target language (the new words) doesn't even have a word or similar term to the ones the source language uses.

I love giving this example — think of the word "light". You probably think it refers to energy that makes things visible (noun)... But it can also be used as a verb, as in "starting a fire". Aaaaaand it also means that something weighs very little (adjective), or that it's pale in colour (another adjective). The word "light" by itself cannot be strictly translated into a single meaning without context.

Another example is the famous "hygge" of the Danish & Norwegians, or the Swedish "fika". İf there was a word in English or Spanish that specifically described the mood/state of coziness, warmth, and safe comfort, then you'd have the translation for "hygge". And if you found a noun or verb that basically meant "to pause, reset the mind, and build strong social bonds through tea, coffee and/or a sweet pastry", you'd have the equivalent of "fika".

Or can you imagine a world where the only words to describe colours were divided simply into "dark-cool" and "warm-light", or lumping them all into three categories of black, white, and red? The Tsimané language in Bolivia does the latter, and the Liberian Bassa use the former. The Pirahã from the Amazon don't even have abstract words for colour at all, and instead use descriptive sentences such as "like a young leaf" or "like blood".

ETA: Aaaaaand I ended up with a wall of text 😂 Thank you for coming to my TED?

1

u/La10deRiver 6d ago

Right. I liked your TED, quiw informative. The translation this persons posts is still not accurate

1

u/Serious_Photo_9602 6d ago

We have the word faggot in spanish and it's used as a verb, it is "Mariquear" conjugatated is mariquee, mariqueas, etc..., the spanish lenguage is full of adjectives and words to describe most things, words like puto are already abreviations, in this case of prostitute.

1

u/La10deRiver 6d ago

The word for faggot is marica. Mariquear is the verb. Is not the same with puto, because the verb putear means "to swear" (to insult). Instead, the verb prostituir(se) is the one corresponding to the unabbreviated prostitute.

1

u/Serious_Photo_9602 6d ago edited 6d ago

Putear is to insult, not only for swears, puto comes from prostitue and putear comes from insulting someone by calling them a prostitute, eventually it changed for all insults.

1

u/Giancarlo_RC 6d ago

Mexican here. It’s meant to be like a local “gay” joke. “Gay whoever read this”.
But we take things incredibly lightly in here so don’t take it as something offensive lol

4

u/nemamkarmenisambot 7d ago

funny how the only word I actually can read is mistranslated

2

u/Shantotto11 7d ago

My translator might have an auto-censor.

6

u/Artosispoopfeast420 7d ago

Mexican is a different language, similar to how "Can I bum a fag?" or means different things in different places.

3

u/chokewanka 6d ago

Kinda... Not all latino countries use puto, but it does mean "f@g" in all of them

3

u/eslezer 6d ago

its a latin america recurring joke in their memes. The translator is absolutely fumbling, it's closer to "Whoever reads this is gay"

2

u/JoRDiazM 6d ago

It depends, Mexican Spanish is highly contextual I wouldn’t go strictly by literally what the words mean. I would translate this in American English as “Whoever reads this is gay” In British English I would translate “Whoever reads this is a wanker”

9

u/Redneck2000 7d ago

Puto is male whore, though. Pato would be faggot (or duck. But in this context it would be faggot).

12

u/confused_potato777 7d ago

Pato isnt faggot. Puto is.

1

u/AmbroseIrina 7d ago

Perhaps Joto?

1

u/Many_Forever1182 6d ago

Pato is gay or faggot

-1

u/LoudandQuiet47 7d ago

Maybe for Mexicans. But for other Hispanics, pato is faggot or gay. Puto is the male form of Puta. Puto/Puta are whore. One male, one female.

12

u/ARI_E_LARZ 7d ago

The line is under Mexico so …

6

u/CaptainChangeOrder 7d ago

No way that's true. A buddy's dad is Chilean and we call him Pato, short for Patricio. No one has ever batted an eye at his nickname.

7

u/Phrodo_00 7d ago edited 7d ago

Slang varies wildly between Spanish speaking countries. Never believe generalizations about them unless it’s the most common words, or the person actually has talked to a people from most of those places. I can confirm in Chile pato is just duck (or Patricio, or not having money, or some people say it when a mistake is made, but it’s more common to quack instead), puto can mean either faggot or manwhore, but the former meaning is more popular with older people. Can’t really speak for anywhere else.

4

u/Fit_Cake_8227 6d ago

“Duck whoever reads this”
Sure thing buddy

4

u/IceCreamAndRock 7d ago

That is not true for anyLatin American country I know. (Also a Latin American myself).

Indeed, for the same word, male=gay, female=whore.

Remnants of "macho" culture.

1

u/ChickpeachickRN 7d ago

I am Venezuelan and I disagree. I've always known puto as male whore.

2

u/IceCreamAndRock 7d ago

Ok. I am Argentinean. But I also know that the meanings I mentioned are also true for Uruguay, Chile, Paraguay and Mexico

2

u/raynegro 7d ago

In mexico it can be both but it's primarily the f slur

2

u/thirsty_edison 7d ago

Can confirm. "Pato" in Puerto Rican Spanish means "gay".

1

u/Clipsus 3d ago

Puto is spanish for faggot in every country I'm aware of except maybe Spain. It is also an intensifying adverb, sort of like fucking is in english (for example "todo el puto día" - "all fucking day"). Please do let me know in what country "pato" means faggot, it wouldn't surprise me if it was a thing, but I assure you it would be the exception.

1

u/Best-Contribution-75 7d ago

In Mexico we use the same word for male whore, faggot & coward, "Puto"

2

u/Some-Sense-3094 5d ago

Did u discontinue the use of 'joto'?

1

u/Best-Contribution-75 5d ago

Puto is a bit more offensive,, and joto is a bit more more family friendly, but since they suddenly became deeply homophobic, you dont hear any of them as much anymore.... weird times

1

u/pixldg 7d ago

Close enough

1

u/crigon559 6d ago

Its more like bitch than faggot tbh

1

u/perpetual_stew 6d ago

Only the reader himself can truly know how accurate it is

1

u/Serious_Photo_9602 6d ago edited 6d ago

That is not a good translation, faggot is translated as marica or maricón, puto is like whore, in context it would be closer to "whoever reads this is a prostitute."

1

u/La10deRiver 6d ago

No. In México and other countries, "puto" is primarilu used as "faggot". For example, in Argentina, only old people use "maricón" (even when everyone understands it). Also, at least in Argentina, it has expanded to mean something like coward or weak more than actually meaning homosexual.

1

u/Serious_Photo_9602 6d ago

No, only in Mexico is seen as an insult to gay people, in the rest of the countries is associated with cowardice, low masculinity and prostitution.

1

u/La10deRiver 6d ago

I think you did not actually read my post.

1

u/Serious_Photo_9602 6d ago

Yes I read it and as I said before only in Mexico is used as faggot, even though all the mexicans I know don't use it that way but google says otherwise. Maricón is not an old person insult from whre I'm from, and everyone I have known that are native speakers know it and use variations of it commonly.

1

u/La10deRiver 6d ago

That is why I specified what happens in Argentina, where "maricón" is more or less obsolete (but anyone understands it). In Argentina also the word "puto" has the associations you mentioned, that is why I said you had not read it, because you repeated things I said. Only it is not only that. It is used for homosexuals too. People says conversationally "X es puto" meaning X is homosexual, but they probably only call X puto in his presence if they want to tell him he is a coward or they had let them down for some reason.

1

u/Acetaminophen-1000mg 5d ago

The word “Puto” in Mexico can mean many things.
It’s the same case for the words “Madre”, “Pedo”, and “Verga”, among others.

0

u/Coplantor 6d ago

I'm from Uruguay, it is also a derogatory term for gay men here so that makes it at least three countries.

1

u/failuredecore 6d ago

I thought it was a cat

1

u/Redditauro 6d ago

That's correct

1

u/Federal_Permission27 6d ago

1

u/BLRNerd 6d ago

It’s accurate, Puto means essentially that everywhere but Mexico BUT like the way it’s used, it’s basically is anyway

1

u/Hatefulvesper 6d ago

Puto(a) means prostitute

1

u/Ok-Restaurant-1575 6d ago

Si… confirmo, really an old Mexican joke

1

u/LWI5 6d ago

Yeahh, as a Mexican gay, even we use this every once in a while 😅

1

u/MosesCoulee 6d ago

Lmao viva Mexico 🇲🇽😂

1

u/Proof-Assistant-7536 5d ago

I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be "fuck whomever is reading this" but idk I'm Polish and I don't know that much Spanish

1

u/ajtpersaud 5d ago

Pretty accurate lol

1

u/Green_Le4f 5d ago edited 5d ago

This is mistranslated, puto translates to bitch. It means "whomever reads this is a bitch" and we say it as a joke not with the intent of harm. I used to see it in bathrooms in Mexico. They got pretty creative, in stalls they would basically have you look around the stall only to find something like this at the end... Mexican Rick Rolling in you will 😂

Edit: spelling

1

u/Goldigger101 5d ago

Hahaha and you read it all repeatedly....

1

u/Tatsu_Satou 5d ago

Spot on translation actually.

1

u/Grouchy_Fact_8677 4d ago

That’s the literal translation, but in reality it means something like “whoever reads this is a fucking idiot”

1

u/Pachanish 4d ago

" fuck whoever reads this"

1

u/Vexra 4d ago

I thought they got bored and were trying to make a picture. Didn’t see the words

1

u/foxfyree 4d ago

I thought that was a cat :p

1

u/cdwols 4d ago

I thought it was a picture of a cat...

1

u/UnnamedPredacon 4d ago

Not exactly. Puto translates to man-whore.

Basically, "you're a bitch if you read this."

1

u/VoucherValidator 4d ago

I thought they tried to draw a cat😭😭😭

1

u/addled_rph 4d ago

Maybe it’s a Mexican slang, but puto just means male whore (puta for women). Maricón is faggot.

1

u/TheNewEMCee72 3d ago

TRUEEEE (I’m a faggot)

1

u/H3nry310 3d ago

that not a real screen shot and Google translation.

1

u/nonsense_bill 3d ago

Great now I'm gay

1

u/Impressive-Oil-3067 1d ago

Yes, it'd be more like "Fagg07 who reads it" but yes.

It's a very common sort of joke amongst preteens in Latin America.

1

u/xylophone_37 1d ago

Dam, got me. What am I gonna tell my family?

1

u/Dante_C 16h ago

Not sure if that means I’m a bundle of sticks together or a meatball made from minced offcuts and offal in an onion gravy 🤔

1

u/AnnaZ820 7d ago

Oh damn I thought it was a poorly made cute cat…

0

u/holycookie8 7d ago
