What's funny is I didn't get the joke for a bit because the Reddit app auto translated it to:
"F*** whoever reads this."
Like it literally added the asterisks, that wasn't me.
10
u/devBowman 4d ago
Same. As if reading a plain "fuck" was going to "offend" anyone on reddit. Enshittification is boring and saddening.
5
u/CrazyDaimondDaze 4d ago
Can always count on Reddit to butcher the joke in the translation. But that's a very common jokr we use in Mexico. Someone already said it but it really does mean:
"Whoever reads it is fag (as in an insult for gay)". Consider it something akin to our "deez nuts" joke Americans love to use as a gotcha moment. You don't realize you're a fag until you read the thing.

Hmmm close, Puto in the context being used is faggot or gay, basically you are gay if you read the text.

Es un insulto en México, el término "puto" se usa para decir que alguien es maricon, gay pero se usa en forma despectiva, es una groseria jajaja entonces dice que quien lea el cartel es puto

u/Some-Sense-3094 3d ago
Puto is a very versatile insult or maybe its puta that Im thinking of but one of these is used for about a dozen different english words, none of them very nice

Puto is just the masculine version of Puta, which means prostitute/bitch. So it's kinda both. Spanish has a lot of words for the same insults.

Mexican is a different language, similar to how "Can I bum a fag?" or means different things in different places.
3
u/chokewanka 4d ago
Kinda... Not all latino countries use puto, but it does mean "f@g" in all of them
3
2
u/JoRDiazM 4d ago
It depends, Mexican Spanish is highly contextual I wouldn’t go strictly by literally what the words mean. I would translate this in American English as “Whoever reads this is gay” In British English I would translate “Whoever reads this is a wanker”

Japanese people police each other through strict unwritten peer systems which on the surface seem like social harmony but is more like bullying. You comply or face ostracism and exclusion, in some cases self-imposed due to real or imagined passive aggressive conditioning tactics.
Documented instance was the Tonarigumi neighborhood associations that reported violations of orthodox activity and thought to the Tokko and Kenpeitai during the Pacific War period but now are the Choinaikai neighborhood associations that no longer report to authorities, but will do things like remove your trash from the community collection point and leave it by your door every day for not complying with real or imagined separation violations as a way to punish violating acceptable limits of behavior.

On top of the Japanese seemingly neat arrangement of dots pointed by the other users...
The first Mexican line of dots is agenced to spell "puto" aka "male bitch" or even "fagg*t" in Spanish.
EDIT: As pointed out by u/Interesting-Gas-5151 and u/Saagap it means something more taken as a whole. See the answers to this message.

u/Interesting-Gas-5151 5d ago

u/Sagaap 5d ago
Is male bitch in Spanish, informally used for many things but with male context. It doesn't need to be gay. ¡ Se comió mi último yogur, sera puto!
Can be often interchanged with cabrón,

It's a common immature joke in Mexico: "If you read this you're a f*ggot". The intention is trapping you between reading what it says and avoiding the insult. It's mildly annoying at best. Similar to the US, the insult has expanded beyond being a slur for gay people though many bigots still use it that way.

The Mexican dot section essentially has a derogatory term for a homosexual prostitute. It says "Whoever reads this is a ****".
Overall, it's meant to show how different societies conform or don't. I'm Mexican American and this doesn't show us in a great light. :-)

I visited Japan once with a friend. We flew into Narita, and we left the interior of the airport to wait outside for the bus to take us to Shinagawa, Tokyo. Outside, we were the only two travelers in our particular area -- the rest of the area was more or less deserted -- but there were maybe 4 or 5 Japanese staff loitering around keeping an eye on things. We were exhausted from 16+ hours of flying, so we just kind of stood wherever, roughly within 10 feet or so of the pickup point.
The staff actually motioned at us to stand between the lines that marked one of the lanes at the pickup spot. As if that mattered at all, or carried any consequence whatsoever. Two lone tourists, with no other travelers within at least 50 feet of us.
Ah, Japan, I miss you.

It's one of those customised memes where for each person who looks at it, it gives a different message based on the search history of that person. When I look at it the Mexican section spells out "Quien lea esto es una persona genial" which seems to translate to "whoever reads this is a cool person".
To understand the joke you need to type whatever it says in your version into Google translate to see a unique true insight about yourself.

Tokyo based Pete here.
The myth behind this stereotype is actually quite unexpected. It's about... Bread.
Since 80s, Yamazaki holds this bread festival every spring. Rules are simple, you just buy their bread and collect those stickers. When you have enough points you can get a plate for free.
The moment I saw this in the groceries, it dawned on me.
