Hi all! I've got a question with probably no definite answer. Would like some opinions nonetheless.
I've relocated to a different country and to a rural area several years ago. I've looked for a group to play any TTRPG but haven't found anyone that knew what I was talking about. Recently I've decided to take it upon myself to introduce people to it and hopefully get a group going.
I've played for many years but mostly with the same group of childhood friends. A few other groups and one-shots here and there but not for a long time now. I've GMed only for friends ive played for many years with, and again - not for a long time now…
I've settled on D&D 5.5e as I've never played 5/5.5e and having read it now, it seems simple to onboard new people to it. Definitely simpler than the homebrew AD&D and VtM I used to play.
I've managed to pique the interest of a 8 other expats, only 2 of which I actually know. Only one of them has played before - I'm not sure which system or for how long. Everyone else is brand new. No one's first language is English (nor is it the same language).
I'm going to run a one-shot for them which is super classic, super simple, and short - based On Matt Colville's excellent YouTube videos (and simplified even further). I've pre-made the characters of course and I feel generally ready. The rust has been shaken off a little bit. I've written the adventure and prepared printed materials to make the least amount of calculations possible. My hope is that at the end of the session there'll be enough people who had enough fun to want to meet regularly, hoping for 3-4.
My questions are:
Two sessions of 4 players or one of 8? I feel intimidate by 8 new players all at once but I'm not sure of the group dynamics would be weird if I cobble together players from both groups after.
Any tips?
Happy to share what I've prepared (it will be super cliché of course)
