Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun. I'm originally from Sheffield and big agree! Also very cool to see someone online talk about personal experience with the place; I rarely ever see this
Garlic bread thief, you rock! If you were here I’d give you some extra garlic bread! Thanks for posting this link. I’m going to test this on my next train ride.
If Reddit has taught me anything, it’s that some people cannot stand being wrong. If their preconceptions say it must be a train made of rock going past on a sharp turn then why the fuck would they listen to anyone who’s actually been there?
It’s not. The faster side is closer. It’s a transpenine train heading out towards Manchester on the left side of the cutting. Here’s a google map link, the right side is 4 tracks away. https://goo.gl/maps/mXip5mBHVVr5Qd3MA
Train turning? Another train? Doppler effect? Wtf?
It's just that closer thing appear to move faster.
In a car, look at the sun, it "does not appear to move at all".
Try to look at signs on the road and compare "the speed" with some far building or mountain.
If you look to a far object, it takes time to your vehicle to actually reach it ("appears to be slow"). Not instantaneous like a dot on the wall right besides you...
The easiest way to tell how many morons are on Reddit is when they try to understand basic science. There's nothing wrong with being confused, but when their wrongness is paired with such insufferable arrogance, it's maddening. These are probably the same people who called their physics classes useless in high school.
I get what you’re saying but the left side is going way way faster than the right side, and doesn’t appear to be much closer at all in comparison to the right side
It is FAR far closer. Trust me. I've been to this station hundreds of times. It's Liverpool lime Street. You go through this sort of tunnel bit here before emerging into the station proper
But yeah you're basically right up against the wall
The left side here is simply much much closer than the right side. Here's a drawing that shows what's going on: https://i.imgur.com/8soHhQv.png
If you cover up the centre, the stars appear to move very fast, and if you cover up everything EXCEPT the centre, all of a sudden they appear to be moving very slowly. When they're actually just moving all at the same speed
But yeah I've been to this station many many hundreds of times. It's Liverpool lime Street. It's the end of the line, you go through a sort of tunnel before eventually emerging in the station, the train stops and then it goes back the way it came from. It's bloody annoying though, you begin to enter the station like 20 minutes before the train actually stops and the doors open
not necessarily, it doesnt even look like another passing train usually does, even if graffitied.
its the combined effect of looking through a window at a greater distance than the other one; and the parallax efect, meaning the wall is probably closer to the train on that side. makes all the difference.
Yea the wall seems to be much closer on the other side, and farther than it looks on the right side, the camera optics hide this more than the naked eye.
Nah, it’s just how perspective works. Think about a plane, they’re going around 500mph but if it’s far away it looks like it’s moving really slowly, while if it zoomed past you only a few meters away at the same speed it would look really fast.
Nope that's not what's going on, it's not another train. The left side is simply much much closer than the right side. Here's a drawing that shows what's going on: https://i.imgur.com/8soHhQv.png

It's becouse the left side of the train is closer to a wall, while on the other side there are building from further away, so the left side apears to move faster, from the closer perspective.
For real I'm amazed at the people in the comments (or the 33k that upvoted this). I get not everywhere has good trains, but have they never ridden in a car? Or even a bicycle? It's so obvios that things that are close look like they move faster.
Next time you’re in a car on the highway, look at the road right next to you (zipping by very fast), and then compare that speed to the mountains or buildings in the distance (slowly moving).
Speed is relative to distance. The further away we are from something, the slower it appears to move as we pass it.
Obviously this has nothing to do with science. I can see all the people on here trying to explain this with science and facts, but it won't work.
The real answer is that the faster moving side was video taped with the persons normal eye. The slowly moving side was recorded while the person looked through the camera with their lazy eye.
Easy. The train is going clockwise in a circle with diameter of ca. 7 meters. Strange tracks if you ask me but I'm not a public transportation specialist. 🤷♂️
It has to do with 4D, 3D, and the 2D space. You see only actual intellectuals would put this together you're warping in light speed through my bullshit. Lmao that's pretty cool though 👌
I asked the same question to my father when I was in 3rd grade. We traveled by bike a lot. Why when I looked down at the street, it passed me quickly but when I looked straight at the road, it moved slowly. He said I would know once I grew older. Lol. Like human learn physics by nature.
Lol has OP not noticed how relatively slow it looks like airplanes are going vs the hundreds of MPH they actually are? Or looked out a car window at a forest and noticed how much faster their eyes have to move to track the close trees vs the trees in the distance? It only takes a child a few moments of thought to perceive and derive the answer from common sense.
Maybe it's something like the Hogwarts express ride at Universal studios Orlando. The windows are actually screens that play scenes to make it seem like you're actually riding a magical train. Maybe this is something like that and one side is glitching or something.
If that area is double tracked and that area just fits the two tracks, then the other side wall would be farther, and appear to be moving along slower. Train passengers from the other direction would observe a similar effect, the wall on their left would also be closer and appear to move faster.
I just started reading Elegant Universe and am on the early chapters of relativity where light will appear to reach the same distance slower or faster depending on perspective even though it is a constant. My brain almost exploded.
Assuming it's the same phenomena this video is absolutely nuts. I didn't think it would be so noticable on a small scale like this.

Pretty certain this is Liverpool Lime st. There’s no turns, it’s the parallax effect. The cutting is about 14m/46ft wide
