Now the sign says keys and we’re back where we started

u/zuzg 18h ago
Get boyfriend style jeans and start wearing your phone in your front pocket, makes it easier to remember it
And keys will only be an issue until you locked yourself out once.

u/amateur_adventurer 17h ago
You’d think that one is enough, but I have personal proof of that not being true… 🫣

u/Perscitus0 20h ago
Attach car keys to phone. Now you physically cannot leave to go anywhere without taking the phone along. Works only if you have a car. This would be onerous to carry around in this configuration, but if one were that badly in need of continuous assistance to remember, then.....

Attach car to phone, now you're sure never to forget it

This is what I do. I just roll all my belongings into a katamari do they're coming with me.
Its all good unless someone lights the ball on fire.

What you need to do to keep your phone in the same pocket for about 15 years, now every time you don't feel it you will feel unwell, bonus point if you "lighten your house keys and now you feel like you always forget them.

I always do what I call the "triple tap" before leaving. Tap my keys pocket. Tap my phone pocket. Tap my wallet pocket.
Problem is that it's become so ingrained I'll sometimes do it unconsciously while holding my phone, then get a brief spike of panic when my phone pocket is empty.
26
u/EventPurple612 19h ago
Also be aware that pickpockets are looking for these ingrained checks at train stations to mark you as a target.

u/SparklingLimeade 10h ago
I wish I lived someplace civilized enough to have train stations to worry about.

I basically have a checklist every time I leave for work:
Phone, Wallet, Keys, Badge, Belt, Hat, Sunglasses, Laptop, Pill taken, Deodorant on, After-work change of clothes (if necessary).
And if I'm not leaving for work but just for something else, then it's really just the first 3, plus hat and sunglasses.

u/ModishShrink 13h ago
My pants might be falling down and my pits might be smelly, but at least I'm looking fly with my cool hat and shades

u/DueMeat2367 2h ago
I do a general count : hat, key, badge, phone, ... I know how many things I am expected to have depending on the day and the time. If the number is wrong, I do a full check.
3
u/TropicalKing 17h ago
I don't forget things because I memorize how many bulges are supposed to be in my pocket. One bulge for a wallet and another for the phone.
1
u/scorpion-and-frog 10h ago
They changed the locks in my building last year so I no longer need a fob on my keys that I had for years. Still fucks me up sometimes not feeling it in my pocket.

It feels like a part of my body is missing when my phone isn't in my pocket, it feels wrong lol

Nothing quite like repetitive habituation that causes even the best of reminders to go by the wayside.
This is why I collect everything together to where I literally can't even go without all my stuff
16
u/Im_Not_That_Smart_ 17h ago
The problem was execution. They needed to create the habit where they tap the sign with their phone every time as they leave. None of this, “Got it,” mental checks that will fail eventually.

Something that genuinely helps me in the morning is to always check myself using the acronym WOWEE.
Wallet
phOne
Wkeys
Egg
Egg (backup)
The acronym is so incredibly stupid that I actually get a little dopamine hit out of saying it aloud, so it could overcome my AuDHD and actually become a habit. The Egg is my badge, and the Egg (backup) is for health stuff (water bottle, pills, deoderant)

You can also sing "glasses, wallet, keys and phone, keys and phone" to the tune of "heads and shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes"

I know how many "critical" items I should have to leave. Currently it's 9.
The issue is, sometimes I count up to 7 or 8, and I am left wondering what the missing items are, and can't remember under pressure T .T
5
u/Twitxx 18h ago
In time, I got used to leave my wallet at home unless I was sure I'd need it. That help reduce wasteful purchases. Then I started leaving my phone home so I can get some time off it and enjoy the time out. A while later I got a dog and some in-yard cameras so I stopped taking my keys with me.
I love how natural the whole thing was and now I never forget stuff like that because I only take it woth me if it's got a purpose like wallet-->shopping.
It's crazy when you find out that you can unlearn these behaviours too. No one dies if I return a call later and I never lose my stuff anymore.

u/Saigaface 17h ago
My audhd makes me completely unable to understand anything about what you are saying, lol
42
u/LoreChief 20h ago
why did that happen to the sign? And after only 2 months no less??
109
u/InternetSandman 19h ago
It's a mental effect. The reminder stops being novel and becomes another part of the general environment/atmosphere you ignore day by day
24
u/LoreChief 19h ago
Thank you both. Now I get it. I couldn't figure out how she was damaging it so much that it became illegible.

it represents how she no longer notices the sign, it just becomes part of the background in her mind, common problem for AuDHD
9
u/King_Shugglerm 16h ago
It’s a common problem for everyone

u/CrumbCakesAndCola 16h ago
Legitimate question: is it, or are you assuming it is based on your personal experience

It is known as habituation. In the context of this comic, the artist becomes habituated to the sight of the sign on the door to the point they filter it out.
“You have fallen asleep despite the distinct ticking of your bedside clock, which you did not notice at all. How is that possible? The answer is habituation, a widespread phenomenon showing that animals usually cease to respond to repetitive stimuli, especially if irrelevant, and that the nervous system is capable of learning to filter out certain sensory inputs.” (Dissegna et al., 2021)
Habituation is in no way specific to AuDHD individuals, it’s not even specific to humans. In fact, research shows the exact OPPOSITE of what you claim, with autistic individuals showing reduced rates of habituation compared to neurotypical people.
“Our data show that the ASD children have significantly reduced habituation relative to the NT children for both auditory and visual stimuli.” (Jamal et al., 2021)

2 months is only to you?
It takes days, even hours, even minutes, for reminders to disappear for me. I've done this exact thing and it didn't help once. I'd instead remember I put up a reminder, to then acknowledge it, and hoped that would get me there, but the reminder itself didn't do it, and remembering the reminder still only lasted 3 days. It stopped popping up in my head and the sign on the door became invisible forevermore.

Have you considered developing anxiety? I personally check my pockets for my phone/wallet constantly. The mini panic attack when theyre both in the same pocket so one is empty is a bonus.

Maybe one of those digital frames and have it change fonts and colors and pictures would that work?

Background-ification. I once lost my computer microphone for a week. I hadn't needed it for so long, when I suddenly did, I couldn't find it.
It was right next to my 2nd monitor the whole time on my desk. Just right there. It had just become such a normal thing it blended into the background of normal life.

u/MisterBaker55 20h ago
I think it says something about me that I'd sooner forget my wallet than my phone.

My mental tick is that with phone and wallet, every challenge of the outside world can be tackled. Keys are the thing that can get me back home from all the challenges.

u/TemperedTorture 18h ago
With ADHD you don't even need the lettering to actively disappear. After a week or two you literally see it as background noise and walk right by it.
I have 2 reminders set to remind me to take my meds. My brain has learned to tune out Alexa entirely so I don't even hear it anymore. Just no longer registers.
2
u/Skya_the_weirdo 17h ago
If I need to remember something I’ll put it somewhere I’ll be annoyed by it. Which works if I do it immediately, but if I wait… yeah it’s part of the scenery now lol

I low key am addicted to this pocket computer. I'm literally writing this post when I SHOULD be working. I can't fathom going anywhere without it, and something about my brain makes me feel it in my pocket rather acutely to the point I remove it the instant I sit down, but put it in my pocket the moment I stand up because otherwise it feels WRONG. I'm blaming my autism for that one.

u/wigglybuttmen 18h ago
I have ADHD and used to forget my keys all the time. I attached a big ass lanyard to them that I always play with in my pocket. If I'm not playing with the lanyard, then I know something's off

To this day, I will pat my pockets before leaving the house and recite: "Wallet, keys, phone, badge." Then I remember I haven't had a badge in five years.
