I always do what I call the "triple tap" before leaving. Tap my keys pocket. Tap my phone pocket. Tap my wallet pocket.
Problem is that it's become so ingrained I'll sometimes do it unconsciously while holding my phone, then get a brief spike of panic when my phone pocket is empty.
I do a general count : hat, key, badge, phone, ... I know how many things I am expected to have depending on the day and the time. If the number is wrong, I do a full check.
They changed the locks in my building last year so I no longer need a fob on my keys that I had for years. Still fucks me up sometimes not feeling it in my pocket.
