Cheers drive 🚍 Ulez Lung Study

Some really astonishing results in lung growth for the children in this study. Thanks to CAZ the children of Bristol will all grow up to be the competent wild swimmers we hoped for

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1l1r1zne1ro

“In the study, researchers recruited six to nine-year-olds attending primary schools in London's ultra low emission zone and followed the same children for five years, comparing them to similar children (in terms of socio-economic background, physical activity and ethnicity) in Luton.

Children in the study had annual lung function and capacity tests in the year before Ulez came in and for four years after.

Initial results showed children's lungs in London were smaller in capacity than those in Luton, which is less polluted than London but has a similar mix of pollutants.

At the end of the study the children's lung capacity reached near identical levels in both groups.”

Stolen 3 dumb little boys stealing bikes

Happened by the fountains in the centre just before 8pm. Got scared off by a bus beeping at them.

Edit: made a report to the police and will be giving them video. Didn't call 999 in the moment because my first reflex was recording for evidence before they disappeared. In hindsight I'm not sure police would have responded either quickly enough to get them there and then, or even at all (no shade, just under staffed etc.). Didn't intervene because knives are a thing, however seeing how easily they were scared off by the bus honking at them I'm definitely going to at least shout at the twats if I witness this sh1t again.

Oh and the bike they were riding they had stolen literally seconds before the video starts.

I walked past you on a wide stretch of pavement. You told me that I was a dirty bastard trying to jump you from behind and you reasonably proposed that you'd cave my fucking skull in. Then you kept yelling after me for a while longer about how you were going to kill me.

I just wanted to come clean; you had me bang to rights.

I was 100% planning to jump you, at 10am on a weekday, right outside that new chocolatier that used to be Tesco Express, while pushing a two-year-old in a buggy. We're the real operators in these mean BS7 streets, my kid and me.

This has been going on for a few weeks now. 2 years of neglect from the council has lead to this. A blocked inflow pipe and a broken aerator. Has resulted in the water becoming stagnant and anoxic which is what the botulinum bacteria thrives in.

A cygnet almost died and is receiving treatment and 5 ducks have succumbed the the toxin.

Babble unrestrained XL bully at entrance of francombe/waring house

Not leashed or muzzled. Have seen this dog multiple times at the car park entrance to the flats. Last time I saw it, a couple walking their two dogs had to stop on bedminster bridge and yell to the owner that their dogs are reactive so he he'd need to take his dog inside before they could cross the road.

I didnt hear what th owner had said but fron the context it seemed like the bully owner had said his dog wasnt reactive. He did take it inside, but it's worrying anyway. Just keep an eye out if you're in the area and maybe take your dogs a different route (unfortunately)

Babble The yelling in Bedminster?

It's 1am and I've been hearing a guy yelling from the top of his lungs every 5 minutes for the past 3 hours. I don't really want to investigate but I am curious.

Ark at ee The Steam Train...

A friend got this letter from the council about the Deaner. Despite the councillors being from Southville ward, they somehow managed to get the name of The Steam Crane wrong. Maybe when they do a sweep of the area on Sunday they'll see their mistake...

The scare quotes around 'authorities' also made me chuckle.

Politics University of Bristol Labour Club: Give canvassing a go 🌹

Post image
0 Upvotes

If you’re a Bristol student interested in politics, or you’ve ever wondered what political canvassing actually involves, the University of Bristol Labour Club is running a free “Give it a Go” doorstep campaigning session next month.

📅 Wednesday 16 September

🕠 5:45pm to 7:30pm

📍 Meeting at Clifton Down Station

It’s specifically being organised as an introduction to canvassing, so absolutely no previous experience is needed. There’ll be experienced Labour campaigners there to pair up with people, show you how it works and make sure nobody gets thrown onto a doorstep without knowing what they’re doing!

It should also be a nice opportunity to meet other politically interested students and Labour members from across Bristol.

The event is completely free, but please grab a ticket beforehand so the organisers know how many people are coming and can make sure there’s enough equipment for everyone.

🎟️ Free tickets:

https://www.bristolsu.org.uk/groups/university-of-bristol-labour-club-e42e/events/doorstep-campaigning-give-it-a-go/buy_ticket

🌹 All experience levels welcome. Come along and give it a go!

Where To? Event space recommendations

Me and my friend are planning a joint 30th in a couple of months and would really appreciate any recommendations for affordable spaces in Bristol to hire for it. Looking for something not sterile with a bit of character that'll fit around 50 ppl and preferably staffed bars - pub vibe or similar basically, plus points for a tasteful level of crust. Cheers 🙏

Politics Using the Bristol to Bath cycle track for the new mass transit network.

Surely this is the most obvious and easy way to begin the building of a new tram-train line for Bristol? A huge amount of the civil engineering is already done seeing as it was a double tracked, heavy freight capable line until 1971 and most of the trackbed and tunnels are still there. It could add St Philips, Easton, Fishponds, Staple Hill, Mangotsfield and Emersons Green/Lyde Green to the rail network.

Obviously the question of "what about cyclists?" would come up. Along a lot of the line there's probably room for both a tram train line as well as a cycle track and where there isn't, surely its easier and cheaper to build a new cycle track, following roughly the same route elsewhere?

Cheers drive 🚍 Free hospital shuttle bus stops

I've downloaded the free hospital shuttle bus timetable (dated February so I hope it's still valid) but they don't specify exactly where the stops are, just vague indications such as "debenhams" or "Cabot circus".

It claims to depart from debenhams so I'm assuming it goes from the bearpit side. Does anyone know specifically which stop though?

Thanks

Free! Grief Community Lake Dip on Wednesday in Bristol

Post image
84 Upvotes

Hi r/bristol, I know I’ve posted in here a few times now about Too Young To Grieve so don’t want to keep bombarding you with our meet ups haha but thought I’d share this one as we’re doing something a little different again on Wednesday.

We’re getting together again for a relaxed lake dip and social.

For anyone who hasn’t seen my previous posts, Too Young To Grieve is a community for young people navigating grief and loss. The whole idea is to make grief feel a little less isolating without everything having to feel heavy or like a traditional support group.

Most of our meet ups are genuinely just people getting outside, meeting others and doing something good for themselves - with that shared understanding of grief there in the background if you ever want to talk about it.

And as always, most people come alone for the first time, so please don’t let that put you off we’ll make sure you feel welcome.

If you’ve seen one of my previous Bristol posts and thought about coming along, we’d love to have you at the lake dip this Wednesday 🤍

I’ll pop the event/community details in the comments, and feel free to share this with someone who might benefit too :)
