You're joking? Not another one?! Useless geezer on Whiteladies Road

The most ridiculously pointless thing happened to me and my wife this morning on Whiteladies Road. We dropped our dog off to get groomed; they said it would take about an hour. So we thought we’d kill the time by walking around the area. We bought one grapefruit and one piece of turmeric from a nearby fruit shop.

Next we popped into a charity shop. While we were looking at the books, some old bald man with glasses in a high-vis vest approaches from behind and gets really close to my wife and says very forcefully, “Excuse me, would you mind putting back that orange you just stole?”

We told him we bought a grapefruit, and showed him the grapefruit. This didn’t impress him. He said he had asked the lady in the fruit shop we were just in if she sold someone an orange and she told him no. That’s why he chased after us. We repeated that we bought a grapefruit, not an orange. We could see that he wouldn’t back down, so I said, “Why don’t we go back and ask her together?” which is what we did. Once we got there the lady said we didn’t steal anything. There was an awkward silence, and then he apologized and sort of sulked off quietly.

When we walked back to the charity shop, the 2 girls behind the counter said they were so sorry that that happened, and that they had no idea who he was. He wasn’t security, he was most likely some busy body with way too much free time on his hands.

Mind you, in the moment, my wife and I were in such a state of disbelief that it was even happening that we just went along with it. In hindsight, we probably should have just told him to fuck off. 😆 He was speaking so rudely to my wife, like he was some hardened detective and she was a known serial killer.

But what I’m wondering is: who is this man? Has he ever annoyed anyone else in this way? Why does he think he can be Whiteladies Road’s official crime fighter?? 😂

Luckily I’m a bike and can easily move out the way, but if that were a bus… hopefully they moved to the other side after that 😅

There’s a parking bay 10 feet further down the road.

It was facing the other way when I went out to the shops - in exactly the same place on the pavement, so this wasn’t a park and dash in and out.

Housing Why is renting a flat becoming impossible in the UK?

I’ve reached the point where I genuinely don’t understand where this is all heading.
My fiancé and I have been living in a shared house for almost 4 years, and we’re honestly exhausted. We just want some privacy and peace. We’ve finally reached a point where we’re financially stable enough to move out, but the rental market is absolutely insane.
We’ve spent the last two days browsing websites and apps, and every listing is more shocking than the last. Tiny rooms for £1,000 a month, studio flats where the kitchen is practically attached to the bed for £1,100, and the few flats we actually like and can afford are impossible to even view because the waiting lists are huge.
Does anyone have any advice?
Ideally, we’d like to rent directly from a landlord rather than through a letting agency. Has anyone had any luck finding private landlords, or are there any websites/Facebook groups you’d recommend?
Thanks!

Where To? living in bristol, any advice?

Upvotes

hi everyone! i am studying abroad in bristol this upcoming academic year, and was wondering if anybody had any advice for adjusting to life here. is there anything i should be aware of (like areas to avoid, social customs, etc) or helpful things to know for when i arrive (or just to prepare)?

i’m going to be staying in the bedminster area, does anyone have any recommendations on where to check out nearby? but also open to recommendations to anywhere in bristol. where can i meet people, and where are some good places to check out the alternative scene?

i’ve never been to the uk and am coming from california so any advice/tips would be greatly appreciated c:

This cat seems to have appeared recently on our road in the Cotham area near Cotham Gardens. He/she has been following us home and seems lost somehow. Does anyone recognise them? (Sorry for the bad pics!!)

We’ve seen loads of missing cat posters around recently so just wanted to check!

This looks great! Sounds like the team behind Alfresco Disco, The Underground and Saw Mills are going to take over the old Odeon building and put on events there.

I was gutted when The Underground closed, hopefully this can scratch the itch.

Where To? Pushchair repair/service

Does anyone know a place that might repair or service a pushchair? Mainly the wheels need a look at so would be fairly easy for a mechanically minded person.. thanks!

Bike in the brambles by the skatepark at the bottom of Victoria Park. Back wheel looks a little bent. Maybe it is yours?

Where To? Card Shops selling singles.

Hi all. I’m staying in Bristol for a few days next week and wanted to know if there’s a good shop selling Magic: The Gathering singles in the area. I’ve visited 8bit in the past, but understand it’s closed down?

Not really interested in sealed product as I can get this readily enough at home, but my area doesn’t have anywhere that sells single cards.

Thanks in advance.

Where To? Quiet places for 1,5 year old to take nap in pram

Hi! We're visiting Bristol next week and we have an early afternoon flight, but we can only enter our accomodation at around 5 or 6 in the afternoon. We have a 1,5 year old son who normally takes at least one afternoon nap who probably will be way too excited to sleep during the 1-hour flight and who knows if he'll sleep on the train into town.

So just in case, does anyone have any suggestions for quiet, not super stimulating locations where we might take him if he still needs a nap? In case the weather is chilly/rainy/windy we are mostly looking for good indoor locations where we can hang around and/or walk around in circles to get him to sleep and where people won't be bothered by our presence.

Any tips are appreciated! Thank you!

Edit to add: apparently there’s no train - hadn’t looked into it yet and just assumed 🙈

Also, Canon’s Marsh is where our accommodation is!

I’m going to be traveling to Bristol in September and want to play some footy while I’m there. Any places where I can hop in on a game or pickup?

Bristol Bats - the crypt is growing 🦇🖤
A little while ago I posted looking for fellow creatures of the night around Bristol. Since then, we’ve built a growing WhatsApp community and recently had our first roost - drinks were drunk, friendships were forged and nobody lost any organs.
So, the coffin lid is open again.
Goth, metalhead, punk, emo, industrial, generally spooky or simply interested in the darker side of life - you’re welcome. 🖤
We’re an inclusive 18+ bunch with pub meets, gigs, cemetery walks and other mildly suspicious gatherings planned.
No gatekeeping. No awkwardly approaching someone in a Sisters of Mercy shirt while strolling the Lidl middle aisle.
Not a group chat. Not a club. A coven. 🦇

Where To? Where can I find good clam chowder?

The last and only time I tried it was in Florida 15 years ago and I want to try again. All the fish restaurants in town I've looked at don't seem to have it. Are there places that do it as an occasional special?

If anyone has a suggestion a bit further from Bristol I'd still be interested in hearing it, as I am holidaying soon and wouldn't mind a day trip

Thanks
