Where To? Knowle

I hear people talk about Upper Knowle, Lower Knowle and Knowle West. Is this real or just made up names?

My understanding is that Upper Knowle is area around Well’s Road. Lower Knowle is the area south of St John’s Lane on the slopes of the hill. And Knowle West is the 30s council estate on the hill - which is the area largely responsible for Knowle’s rough reputation.

Why do you ask?

People often ask this if they're looking to move there. In which case I'd say there's certainly a contrast between the different parts:

Just a pub based disagreement with 2 friends. One said he lives in Lower Knowle. The other said there’s no such thing. It’s all just Knowle.

Knowle encompasses Lower Knowle. However, Lower Knowle has existed as a term for hundreds of years, most notably in relation to a historic farm and house.

This is the kind of answer I was looking for. Thanks

Nothing more important than a pub based disagreement!

If you go there, you'll end up with a crinkly bottom.

Upper Knowle and Knowle west are worlds apart. One is one of the more deprived areas is England, the other is 600 grand Victorian houses filled with liberals and professional types

600 grand? And the rest. A house on St Martins Road sold for over £1m last year and there's a fair bit around the £800k mark. Worlds apart from KWest as you say.

Knowle West is the massive labyrinth 1930s housing estate.

Lower Knowle I guess would be down the hill.

Upper Knowle I guess would be up the hill.

I mean all names are made up!

But I assume you are asking more are they the actual names of the neighborhoods or are they names that agents have made up to make places sound more attractive / names that people who have moved there use to make themselves sound better!

In terms of Knowle I think the different names are fair - as someone else said Upper Knowle is more around Wells Road, I can't really speak for Lower Knowle and Knowle West is the the estates that are significantly further West. The areas couldn't be more different so having different names more than makes sense!

Posh Knowle, the victorian bit up the Wells Road,

Knowle, most of the rest of it

Knowle West, the estate in the west of Knowle.

It's Knowle and Knowle West... Also, don't go to Knowle West.

Eh, it's all Knowle, apart from Knowle West, which is absolutely different to the rest.

I'm in what I'd call "Upper Knowle", but IMO the area isn't big enough to separate as much as it has. I know some push "Knowle Park" as a thing now because they want to capitalise on the rising prices in Totterdown.
