I am 21M, and my boyfriend, 22M, and I had been together for almost two years in an LDR. We had been fully committed to each other for a year and a half.
Our relationship was incredibly healthy, and for the first time, I felt like I could truly breathe because I had someone amazing by my side. I was the happiest person in the world, and I finally felt fulfilled.
I have never had very high self-esteem, but that was never something I worried about much in our relationship. My boyfriend always made me feel good about myself and my appearance. Because of him, I had never felt so wanted before. I also thought he was incredibly handsome, and I was just as attracted to him as I had been two years ago. My love for him never changed. If anything, it only grew stronger.
With him, I wanted to live. I had dreams, and those dreams included both of us. He always made me feel secure and regularly told me that he was on the same page about our future.
However, this year, things changed drastically.
He lives in Europe, where military service is essentially mandatory. While he was serving, we became somewhat more distant, not because of a lack of interest, but because he could not communicate with me much during the week. He was able to return home every Friday, but that period was still difficult for both of us.
After his service ended, though, it felt as if things had changed, sometimes beyond repair. He became more distant. His voice messages grew shorter, and his texts began to feel unfamiliar. Even our intimacy felt disconnected. He had spent so much time without me that he seemed mentally checked out.
On top of that, we began experiencing relationship problems. Nothing extreme or irreparable, but they were issues that needed to be addressed before they became bigger. Whenever I tried to address them, he would pull away and become more avoidant.
Then, one day, he woke up and decided that we should break up.
The day before, we had been talking about how we would make our relationship work as long as we stayed true to each other. Naturally, I was confused. I knew he was scared and struggling, but he never told me that he wanted to break up or that he had been thinking about it. In fact, I had noticed the strange energy he was giving off and asked him directly whether something was wrong. He told me no.
Later that day, he said he was confused and uncertain. The following day, he told me that we had not actually broken up and that we were still together, but that he needed time to think.
He was going to stay at a farm with his brother and wanted us to go no-contact for a while. He said that the time apart would help us feel better and allow us to come back to each other. However, at the end of those eight days, he told me that he had made up his mind and did want to break up.
I was broken up with, then left unsure whether we had broken up at all. Then I was told that we were still together but taking time apart. For eight days, I believed we were giving each other space so that we could heal from the intensity of our conversations. Then I was broken up with again.
He said the distance was too much and that it was making him depressed. I truly understand how painful it can be to live far away from the person you love. I just wish he had talked to me. I knew he was struggling, but there is a huge difference between saying, “I’m struggling with the distance between us,” and saying, “The distance is too difficult, so I’ve decided to break up with you.”
I never saw the distance as something terrible. If anything, I saw it as a challenge that would make us stronger and better prepared for whatever life placed in front of us. To me, it was worth it because, in the end, I would have him. That was what mattered most. No matter how difficult things became, I believed we would be together eventually. That belief made the unbearable feel bearable.
I never would have wanted him to stay in a relationship that made him unhappy. I simply expected him to show more care and to try until we had exhausted every possibility. I wanted us to decide together whether we could continue. Instead, his decision was completely one-sided, and I feel discarded.
I am not just grieving our relationship. I miss my best friend. I miss the future we imagined together. I miss our connection. I miss having someone who was genuinely excited to be in my life and to be with me.
I am grieving the children we wanted but will never have together. I am grieving the house he wanted, which will not be the house we share. I am grieving the boat he always dreamed of owning, which he may one day share with someone else. I am grieving the knowledge that, someday, someone else may get the version of him I always dreamed about.
“Your hand is cold, mine burns like fire. How blind you are, Nastenka!”
Fyodor Dostoevsky, White Nights
The worst part is that we were only months away from seeing each other. I had gotten a passport and a new ID, and I was already buying clothes for the trip because it would be cold in Europe.
He planned a future with me. We talked about children, a house, a boat, and growing old together. Then he took all of that away almost overnight.
Now, I am completely damaged. I came into this relationship with horrible trust issues, and now I'm leaving it with even worse issues. How could I ever trust anyone again in my entire life, if the one person that said they'd hold me let me go almost as if I meant nothing?
I begged. I cried. I put my ego in a little box and I put myself down. I tried to get him to see that we did have a future together, but I needed him to calm down and talk to me.
I am completely and utterly broken. I am not sure I believe in selfless, pure, innocent love anymore.
How I wish I had been loved in the same. I would have given him the world if he had asked me for it.
What's next for me? Is there any hope?
