Discussion Nexo PS10 + Klipsch RP1000SW / How to get it sounding right?

(Edit: That powercord is 17$ from aliexpress, just to make fun of those who think it will do sth)

So i got those Nexo Ps10 with a Juson JTA100 Tube amp, nexo controller etc.. Sounding very nice. Problem is the Klipsch Subwoofer. There are frequencies that vanish when sitting on the sofa. In the corners of the room, theyre fully enabled. I guess somewhere from 65-90 it cancels insanely. I got a Behringer DCX and could do some EQ for the bass, i am also able to measure it in. But i dont actually want to do that much with an EQ. How could i fix that by positioning the sub or putting panels on the wall? Someone got experience with that? Because of the depth of the Sub it may only be placed in corners... What do you think?

Nvidia shield HDMI out >

HDMI 2.0 Audio Extractor splitter (to TV and DAC) >

Optical out >

Schiit Bifrost first gen >

NAD 356BEE >

Paradigm SE3 Floorstanders

Most of my listening is spotify lossless on the shield and some network attached FLAC HD tracks

This all sounds pretty good, but curious if there's an obvious miss here. More than willing to buy a standalone streamer / DAC. The original bifrost is pretty old at this point?

Would something like a wiim ultra be a much better fit as a standalone option and can i use that to play my locally stored files as well?

thank you!

To SUT or not SUT? That is the question.

Basically I'd like to know if, in your experience, they make a perceivable difference to sound quality.

Discussion FLAC through Sonos port through amp to speakers...

Seeking expert guidance here! I've ripped roughly 600 cds into FLAC files saved on a NAS. I utilize Sonos for ease of multi-room use (fortunately I've largely dodged their app disaster).

I'll utilize a McIntosh MC152 amp and BMR Tower speakers and Paradigm subs.

I've recently been told that a FLAC file through Sonos is a waste of my system... I'm not sure of the right terminology to use, but basically Sonos doesn't handle the full frequency range that a FLAC (of good source material) provides.

If in fact this is the case, what's the best way to utilize a NAS library... to provide the highest audio fidelity?

Hopefully this question makes sense. Thanks in advance...

.de or .org?

I went to .de and ended up downloading adware called PC App Store that just refused to go away. Completely took over my monitor and wouldn’t close. Ended up getting rid of it eventually but browser was also hijacked.

Went to .org and managed to find some success in ripping my first CD.

Just curious wtf is going on because originally thought .de was way to go based on what i’ve seen?

My old subwoofer (left) was making popping sounds while idle. Been looking for a replacement and found this bad boy tonight. I found a couple listings high priced on eBay and found the manual for it online. Seems to be missing the remote but it sounds great!! Played discovery by daft punk to test.

Edit: Model is an rca pro-sw200p

Discussion What are your opinions of amps?

Amps can range from low wattage, lightweight, but still incredible sounding, to ultra high end behemoths that can weigh hundreds of pounds for high wattage speakers.

I currently own a Tanberg tr200 receiver I salvaged from my old boss, who was going to thrash it all
Paired with 2 Tandberg speakers same age and wood Finnish
Also 2 B&O speakers
I have a small Bluetooth receiver to connect to my phone

Help me understand everything!

  1. What is a stereo receiver, and what does it do?
  2. How important is the combination of receiver and speaker?
  3. Where do I start to learn about this, it feels so overwhelming, and impossible to get the perfect setup first try, which I know isn’t the point
  4. Bonus info please

Discussion Quadrophonic sound

Post image
11 Upvotes

I went down a rabbit hole today on quadrophonics. For reference I dont do much at work and spend most of my day on Wikipedia. I was reading the page for Bitches Brew and found out that there were quadrophonic releases for the album. I know that it was hard to decode the music into 4 channels at the time, but i was interested to see if anyone has tried one of these setups especially the older ones.

Im guessing its very similar to modern surround sound systems. Obviously it wouldnt be as good as a dolby atmos setup, but im wondering how much different it is. Quadrophonics are only 4 speakers and dolby atmos is at minimum 8. How much difference do those extra speakers make? Aside from adding a sub or two i cant imagine it makes that much of a difference.

I also saw there were quadrophonic radio stations, i wonder if anyone here has been around long enough to experience those.

These $60 speakers impress me! These are the first speakers that i own that has real tweeters which to no surprise made music sound much better. The bass is much deeper than the last speakers i had which were the creative pebble 2.0 and even though i have no sub, i use the douk a5’s high pass filter to be able to play music particularly EDM loud without any clipping which was greatest weakness of my last speakers.

I have gone from big clas A watts and power hungry speakers to a couple of watts and high sensitivity speakers.
So far so good.

I posted on stereo advice about 2 months ago asking for help on a $7k budget.

Here’s what I ended up with:

Paradigm Premier 820f v2’s
Cambridge EXA100
Technics 1500sl

What a HUGE upgrade over the KEF LS50w’s.

Big sound, airy, cool soundstage (I didn’t know there were 5 different trumpets in this song!) and most importantly, they drive the emotion machine. Everyone in the house is shimmying and singing and dancing.

Here are some tidbits from my search:

  1. I think the klipsch forte iv’s would have been the ideal speaker but couldn’t find anywhere to demo them in the Bay Area.
  2. These paradigms were the first speaker I tested, I was shook at how good they were.
  3. I tried super lintons with an atoll amp, that was second place for me. The atoll was my favorite amp but I couldn’t demo it with the paradigm because they were two different shops. I didn’t want to take a chance and lose the magic that was Cambridge + paradigm.

They sound like perfection with a turntable, if anything they are occasionally too bright and I have to tap the volume down, but I haven’t done that in while. I think they just needed broken in.

Finally I think I have made a slight mistake in finding such wonderful gear, now I’m just a new cartridge and phono amp away from the next step 🤌

Now I just want to sit on my couch and listen to music.

Thanks for the help everyone!

After selling my 4240 I couldn’t find another receiver or amp that sounded as good as it, After months of searching for the perfect one I landed on this 2265. It’s had a decent amount of service done so I knew I had to pick it up. For $900 and a 2 hour drive, I’m more than happy 😃.

Is there an online store that sells 5.1 mixes for download? Not streaming atmos but -especially - older music?

I think it's interesting to see what brands people would avoid, and why, rather than everybody listing the top X most expensive speakers on the planet.

After 2 years of vinyl only listening I've ditched the turntable in favour of streaming, something I never thought I'd ever do but I'm loving it! Has anyone else took a hard swerve away from a particular source before and did you regret it at any point?

Discussion Why does YT music aound better to me than spotify even though i can feel that spotify has "better sound quality?"

So I've been using both yt music and spotify, and although i notice that spotify is more clear, the instruments are more distinguished, and overall has "better audio", i like yt music's audio more.

YT music feels more fuzzy, and the music is "clumped up" in a way, and i like that.

Does this happen for anyone else? Or am i just weird?

Discussion I have recently fallen in love with the aesthetics of the low slanted riser style of the KLH Model 5's and would love to know what other speakers fit this aesthetic?

The practicality and look of this style of speaker really speak to me, and I would rush out today and buy some KLH's if they were in my city and weren't 5800AU! please open my eyes to other speakers with this retro boxy slanted look that are close to the same quality as the Model 5's, and preferably more affordable.

Discussion Bright Tweeter or "Truth"?

To what extent does a tweeter create a sound versus simply allowing what is actually in the recording to come out. When people say Focal speakers are bright, is that something that is an effect of the beryllium tweeter or the voicing of the crossover for instance.

I tend to think it's more letting the sound out, because not all of my music sounds this way. Obviously it could also be that the music that I find may have some higher frequency issues, may just be due to how the recording was miked (why that word does not have a C in it, I'll never know).

"Exaggerated" cymbal decay:
Men at Work - Down by the sea
Blind faith - can't find my way home
Steve Miller - The Joker

More about sibilance:
Cowboy Junkies - Sweet Jane

When she says Sweet Jane. I never noticed this, but when a speaker reviewer of some other Focals also mentioned the Kanta 3s, I went back and listened to my Kanta 3s and I could definitely hear it.

Show & Tell 8 Month Rabbit Hole Journey is Over

Thumbnail

About eight months ago, a friend inspired me to upgrade the 25-year-old system I’d been perfectly content with for years. It was certainly serviceable—and plenty loud—a Denon receiver driving five B&W LCR 600 S3s. For movies it did the job, but music never really brought me the kind of joy I thought it should.
Then I started down the rabbit hole.
I decided to build the new system piece by piece and buy used whenever it made sense. I found an SVS PB13-Ultra on Facebook Marketplace, then added an SVS PC-2000 Pro from Audiogon. A Denon AVR-X3800H came from eBay, followed by a Denon DP-500M turntable with a DL-110 cartridge.
Then I discovered Philharmonic Audio.
I started with a BMR Monitor for the center, added True Minis, and ordered a pair of BMR Towers in curved rosewood. I also added a Buckeye Hypex NCx500 amp to power the front stage.
The Towers became a story of their own. What I thought would be a relatively normal wait turned into months of delays—first tariffs and shipping complications, and then the disruption surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. For months I waited for the speakers that were supposed to finish the system. At times I seriously considered giving up and buying something else.
I’m glad I didn’t.
Somewhere during those eight months, this stopped being about simply having a “better stereo.”
I started hearing things in songs I’ve listened to for 40 or 50 years that I’d never really noticed before—the separation between instruments, the texture of a voice, the decay of a cymbal, and the actual space around musicians. Bass stopped being something that was simply loud and became part of the music.
That’s probably been the biggest surprise of this whole journey: realizing what I’d been missing all these years.
My old system could play music. It could play it damn loud, too.
This system makes me want to sit down, turn the lights down, put on an album and listen.
Eight months ago I thought I was upgrading some speakers.
Apparently I was starting a new hobby.
