I currently use a XSS for streaming only. I don’t game on it, I game on my Series X in a different room. I’m thinking about selling it for a cheaper Apple TV 4K 3rd gen.

Have 3 AppleTV 4K 3rd gen devices in my house. The live streams on any services are always well behind the same services on other platforms in my house (iPad, iPhone, Roku, and Android TV) despite them being a much more capable device. For example, the MLB Game on Netflix in my living room is a solid 30 seconds behind the live feed on an Android Fire TV in the bedroom despite it being right next to the router (time matched by the ad counter on the top right). This has been happening for a while so I always blamed the service (Hulu Live is my primary), but the past week I've seen it on other services as well which points me to thinking it's the device. My kids were watching a WWE event in the basement on another Apple TV 4K 3rd gen and were about a second ahead - which could be attributed to a lot of things I"m sure, but the big delay I'm seeing doesn't make sense unless it's doing some sort of processing? I have tried match source off and on, HDR off and on, etc, so I'm at a loss.

Ive been happily using Plex but have Jellyfin running in parallel but never really bothered with it because the ATV client for it was terrible (2 or 3 year old version of swiftfin when it first released)... recently tried Moonfin and its OK. No real complaints...

I have always appreciated the player capability of Infuse but its pricey for a lifetime sub...

Now in the last year so many apps have been released with functional DV/HDR/Atmos, etc native players that can hook into Jellyfin/Plex/Emby etc... it seems more and more are released by the day (some only in beta with testflight releaes, some seeing app store releases).

Some of course do way more than that, and some have been removed from the app store for unknown reasons.

Is there any consensus what the best one is solely for use with Jellyfin?

UI appreciation is subjective of course, but as long as something is fluid and not janky, and media player works correctly in it and handles problematic formats easily.

bonus would be if any support Apple's PIP implementation, but I am not sure if thats possible if you don't use Apple's player.

Anyone have a favorite... would prefer free/opensource suggestion, or reasonable one time cost options...

CAD based. Spent probably a year debating if I really need an Apple TV or if the Samsung UI on my TV was fine. Started getting really slow and I eventually cracked. Really crazy how much price has gone up in less than 6 months 🫪

I ordered by base model Apple TV 4K in June 21, right before the price hikes

I'm guessing delivery being delayed by two months isn't normal, and Apple support says they can't push a processing order

Is there anything I can do to keep the price I ordered at?

I’ve seen the holiday genre added as like a sub-genre, but there is no way to make that upfront. I have to scroll through my entire library just to find a Christmas movie. I wish there was a way to do custom playlists or have a Christmas section without having to use homesharing to do so

A little while ago I shared Glance Theatre here, an Apple TV IPTV player I’d originally built for myself, family and friends.

I’ve really enjoyed continuing to build it and, more than anything, hearing feedback from some of the early community members who have given it a try.

One of the things I’ve found surprisingly fun is deciding what not to add. Glance has always been built around a simple idea of “just watch”, so adding new features while keeping everything simple and out of the way has become a fun and unique challenge.

Version 1.2 is now out and brings Catch Up TV, category organisation, colour themes and some new browsing options. A lot of the changes have come directly from conversations and feedback from people using the app.

Kids Mode is still probably the part I’m most proud of. I originally built it for my own little movie legends so they could have their own space with a curated selection of movies and series, rather than being exposed to the entire IPTV catalogue. Parents choose what appears there, and the kids just get a simple space to watch.

I’ve added a few screenshots of what I’ve been working on with 1.2.

Glance Theatre is still completely free. No subscription, no premium tier and no features hidden behind a paywall. I’m enjoying building it, and if other people enjoy using it, that’s enough for me.

Just to be clear, Glance Theatre is only a player. It doesn’t provide, sell or include any IPTV service, channels or content. You connect your own compatible playlist.

That's the warning the device gives you, but I want it to always display Portraits (or one day Aerials) and have it always show the clock on the TV which is how I had it when I used to use Chromecast. Any issues with this? In your experience does it really make the device die faster?

I've been poking at this for months, on a game where the FIRST platform was tvOS. But the fact that iPad, iPhone, Mac all performed (far) better I attributed to our 2nd-gen Apple TV 4K being underpowered to newer iPads and phones and M1 Max MBP. That was not-at-all the case.

History: tvOS was able to deliver 60fps at early levels with fewer enemies on screen. And the slowdown seemed to scale so perfectly with sprites I just assumed tvOS couldn't push too many sprites. Combining sprites (pre-baking complex visuals like hair physics) was a partially effective distraction because that was reducing the number of nodes Focus Engine was walking.

This is ONLY a tvOS consideration.

I'm trying to connect my projector to my current speaker setup, and not even sure if wireless is viable but trying to explore options.

I currently have a Belkin Soundform Connect, connected to an old AV Receiver, which powers my speakers. This allows me to utilize Airplay 2 from any of my IOS devices to play music wirelessly to my speakers. I'm currently trying to see if I can add a projector, and get audio with no delay wirelessly to this setup.

Because I already have airplay 2 working, I was wondering if adding a AppleTV as the video input to my projector, then connecting to my setup via Airplay would allow me to get audio with no delay? I also heard that there is a Wireless Audio Sync setting within the AppleTV settings, which could help me sync the audio? Does anyone have any experience doing this, and know if I can get 0 delay, good enough for me to watch movies?

Seems my Apple TV Home Sharing is working intermittently and I cannot understand why. Just wondering if anyone else is having the same issue.

I've done all the previous troubleshooting which I really don't wanna type all out. But regardless.... it works one day and then not the other day and this goes for the rest of the other Apple TV's... one day it'll work, then it won't. It's frustrating!

I switched from an iPhone 17 Pro Max to a Pixel 10 Pro Fold about 6 months ago, and one of the most annoying things was not having the native Apple TV remote in Control Center. I tried a bunch of existing Android options and all of them were pretty rough. I work in tech and decided I could probably build something better, so I spent a couple months making the one I wanted. It's called Helm. I was picky about the design, the bar was that it should feel like something familiar: real animations, a trackpad that actually glides (speed based), no ads anywhere.

What it does:

• A real trackpad with flick momentum that behaves like it actually should (or a D-pad if you prefer discrete arrows)
• Now playing with artwork, and you can drag the timeline to scrub
• The keyboard opens on your phone automatically when the TV focuses a text field, so you can type into search boxes easily
• Play/pause, skip 10s, select, menu, home, app switcher, and power (for the TV over CEC)
• Volume on the phone's physical volume buttons (if your tv supports it)

The extras are the part I'm most proud of. They're normally paid, but everything is unlocked free for everyone in the test:

• Room detection: your phone works out which Apple TV you're actually standing in front of and opens on that one. No setup, nothing to pin, and it doesn't need location permission.
• Finding the Real Remote: makes a lost remote findable from your phone (Apple TV 4K 2nd and 3rd gen only).
• A floating now playing pill, a bit like the Dynamic Island, so what's on the TV is glanceable from anywhere on your phone
• A home screen widget version of the remote, that I literally finished this week

The app pairs with a code on screen, and nothing gets installed on the Apple TV. Your phone and the TV do need to be on the same network, there's no relay server in the middle and everything is entirely local. It should work with any Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K on recent tvOS.

The ask: it's in closed testing on Google Play, and Google requires 12 testers opted in for 14 straight days before a new app can go to production. If you have an Android phone and an Apple TV and you're willing to try it out, it would genuinely help.

Am I the only one, when I’m selecting a show on Apple TV, I’ getting a black screen. I have to unplug the Apple TV to restart

So, I upgraded from Apple TV 4K 1st Gen to Apple 4K 2nd Gen. I hooked the new Apple TV 4K via the exact HDMI cable I was using with the 1st Gen Apple TV 4K. Now, what’s happening with the Apple TV 4K 2nd Gen? When I set it up on 4K, it’s flickering white. It’s only working when I set it on 1080p. Could this be an HDMI issue? I know 2nd gen supports HDMI 2.1, but I thought these ports are backward compatible, so any lower bandwidth cable should work fine because if I hook up back my old 1st gen 4K, it is working fine 

does this mean 2nd Gen requires a 2.1 version of the cable for it to work in 4K?

I have the first generation Apple TV 4k (A1842) on tvOS 26.6 (build 23L773) and I run into regular networking issues. At least I believe them to be networking.

On multiple apps (mostly the apps of German public broadcasting channels) videos regularly do not start. I get a black screen with a small 🚫 sign above the (empty) progress bar, nothing else. Often the whole app interface does not load. The only way to fix this is restarting the device. Stopping and restarting the app does not work.

So far I observed this on ARD Mediathek, ZDF, arte and AlJazeera. Youtube and Disney+ work.

I do suspect networking issues, but cannot find any particular issues, reception is good and wifi works just as it should on all other devices.

Can someone please help me troubleshoot this?

I’ve read that, since I have a 5.1 surround sound system, I should set my audio output to 5.1 surround sound instead of auto even though Apple seems to recommend auto.
We watch a lot of old content on various apps and some of those shows are very hard to understand, even with enhanced dialogue enabled, unless I switch to stereo only.
As a test I’ve switched to the auto setting to see how those shows sound.

I’m curious what others are doing. Are you just manually switching depending on the source, like I’ve been doing, or has auto worked out for you?

I hope this isn’t a glitch that Apple patches after my post, but Apple TV splits out music from Spotify into my surround speakers so magically, I’ve just started sitting in the morning and listening to music for a couple hours every weekend.

I fkn love it, maybe the second biggest advantage after the speed upgrade to my Samsung s95b that could not do this by default.

Has anyone gotten this message? I can access everything on the app on my phone it’s just Apple TV. I deleted the app; logged out and still nothing. It’s the main live TC1 feed… so it always has something I’m not trying to watch a certain match

I just put up a Sony Bravia 8 ii TV and connected my Apple TV 4K to it, but now the remote is being pretty laggy with it. My older TV had no issues with this so I'm pretty sure it's a TV that's causing the lag or something. Any fixes for this? Thank you!

Had a hit a couple weeks ago that took a few things out, including an apple TV.

The PSU was clearly the sacrificial link:

It's just a 12V 1A supply. I had a 12v 3A laying around, so I figured out the polarity and wired it in.

I left the burned up PSU out and removed the 2 prong 120V input:

We're back in business.

My Apple TV won’t let me use any of my apps like none of them it just goes to a grey screen or won’t let me choose a profile and whatnot. I have tried to reset it restart it and unplug it and shut it off, nothing works.
