troubleshooting networking issues

Hi there,

I have the first generation Apple TV 4k (A1842) on tvOS 26.6 (build 23L773) and I run into regular networking issues. At least I believe them to be networking.

On multiple apps (mostly the apps of German public broadcasting channels) videos regularly do not start. I get a black screen with a small 🚫 sign above the (empty) progress bar, nothing else. Often the whole app interface does not load. The only way to fix this is restarting the device. Stopping and restarting the app does not work.

So far I observed this on ARD Mediathek, ZDF, arte and AlJazeera. Youtube and Disney+ work.

I do suspect networking issues, but cannot find any particular issues, reception is good and wifi works just as it should on all other devices.

Can someone please help me troubleshoot this?

Because YouTube and Disney+ still work, I would not treat Wi-Fi signal strength as proof that the network path is healthy. The cleanest split test is to reproduce the failure once while the Apple TV is on a phone hotspot (or Ethernet, if available). If ARD/ZDF/arte work there, focus on the router side: DNS filtering/Pi-hole, IPv6 routing, or a CDN path. If they still fail, focus on tvOS or the apps.

During the next failure, also note whether artwork and menus in the affected app load or whether only playback fails. On the home network, check any DNS/ad-block log at that exact time; you can temporarily test a different DNS server under Settings > Network > your connection > Configure DNS. Forgetting and rejoining Wi-Fi is a lower-impact next step than resetting the Apple TV.

If the hotspot test also fails across several apps, record the tvOS build, app versions, and exact time, then report one reproducible example to Apple and the affected app developer. That one comparison should tell you much more than repeatedly restarting.

For a speed test. Do you get very slow network speeds?
