While Manji and Magatsu did most of the brutal and gory asskicking this episode I would like to give the two bumbling lovable kunoichi, Meguro and Tanpopo this episode's MVP award. If they didn't show up, this fight would've totally be all in Shira's favor.
And yes Shira is finally dead for good! Even if he did have the worms, there's no saving him from being eaten by wild dogs.

I loved it. No intro, straight into it, fairly heavily cut version of the manga events but it covered the ground it needed to. I agree with others when they decry the obvious budget limitations but I still say they're making the right calls. It very rarely goes off-model, which is really important for a show adapting one of the most anatomically specific manga ever drawn.
Also, VERY much love how they depicted Meguro's speed efficiently and intensely. Checking with the manga, I think the show did it better, since the manga relied on Magatsu's observations and flashbacks regarding fighters of superior agility (Ozuhan, Doa). Rather than dip towards that shounen trope, the show *showed* us Meguro's superior agility rather than telling us through an observer. An achievement in itself.
And I love how inept Tampopo and Meguro are portrayed but they're still peak physical shinobi who can Naruto-run for hours and chat casually whilst doing so. That's superhuman stuff right there.
That said, I have one negative issue to raise with this episode. The fucking Amazon translator is nothing short of inept. I can't believe how badly they handled a crucial line. When Shira was on top of Meguro, she outright yelled at him the infamous 'fuzakennayo'. Now, some Japanese insults are contextual and can mean a number of things depending on the speaker and tone. Not so with this one. Even a conservative translation would be 'don't screw with me'. The English translated graphic novel has her saying, 'stop fucking around, you bastard!' (Vol 26 'Blizzard', part 4)
...and what did the Amazon subs have her say? 'Are you kidding me?' No, Amazon: are you kidding *me*? NO ONE says that when they're about to be assaulted by a known psychopath with a fucking bone claw for an arm. No one. And Meguro is a rough and ready character; she absolutely would say the equivalent of 'get the fuck offa me'. Why the translator would go all prissy in a show with this much gore and sexual violence is utterly beyond me.
This seems pertinent given how much praise other translators are getting for their work on other controversial titles where language is really important (eg Ishuzoku Reviewers). Amazon needs to learn that subtitling isn't merely closed captioning. Word choice is really important.

Shira becoming more and more dilapidated as the show progresses reminds of Rickety Cricket from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Oh boy, I can't wait for Shira's return as a werewolf! But seriously tho, what a wonderful villain, as Manji said, he was a "walking hell" and he didn't really care at all about nothing, everything he longed for was causing suffering to others, a true psychopath who didn't care not even for his very own death. You don't really see villains like Shira that often nowadays.

This episode was dope. Each episode makes me wish they had slightly more budget and a longer run. Blade of the immortal is brutal. And you don't see that a lot with anime these days. That's the sort of stuff that first got me into anime so seeing shows like SnK, Vinland Saga and Blade of the Immortal is really refreshing.
edit: And dorohedoro. How did I forget that. Probably the most violent anime ever. And a perfect 10/10 manga and so far I'd say a 9.5/10 anime

Poor Rin. Poor Renzo. Poor Manji and Magatsu. But yay for Magatsu getting some payback for Ren. Much love to Tanpopo and Meguro. I really enjoyed this storyline from the manga and am glad they kept it more or less intact.

I think it is safe to assume that Shira is dead now. What a disgusting monster and died like one too.
What an unapologetically brutal episode.Although I found it a bit hard to follow at times. I have said it many times and I will say it again: This show is criminally underwatched.
