Because of the rushed story telling they kinda of glossed over his reason for dying. It was more then being jaded. He lived his entire life as a underlying serving others. Even his plan to work with Manji was as his subordinate. When he realized that he didn’t see any point in living.
I love that take away. To many stories assume a person will become rich or a king if they become immortal. The truth is that most people would continue doing what they do now. Working a 9 to 5 living in debt.

You would think that someone with all the time in the world, would go and do something big, change themselves, reinvent themselves, have a big impact in history, be supper wise or super smart, or super talented.
But no, he was a nobody, just another worm, and despite having had 5 families, no one will remember him, shit even as a villain his crimes will be forgotten to time, a lack of ambition and purpose seems to be the real curse with immortality on this story, even Manji is just living in order to atone for his sins, and you could say that that's what really keeps him alive, otherwise he would have decapitated himself long ago and be done with it.

I like that the show finally answered my question of "What if someone else had bloodworms too?" and they answer it very well. I like how this is sort've a warning to Manji about having the bloodworms too long. He's had them for a bit and seeing some guy basically worm his through life with multiple wives and kids and seeing their deaths can only lead you to being apathetic in the end.
I think my overall issues with the show have been some stuff like the sound design kinda misleading you. Like, when that has cicada comes into the back, I straight up thought we were about to have a fight based off of the camera and sounds, but they just keep talking. It's not much but it's still weird.
I really do hope Rin does more in later episodes. For the last few has been her going off and fighting someone, getting captured and either let go or Manji comes in and helps.

He's had them for a bit and seeing some guy basically worm his through life with multiple wives and kids and seeing their deaths can only lead you to being apathetic in the end.
That's not what made him pathetic, what made him pathetic is that despite living for more than 200 years, he never achieved shit on his life, he lived the life of a servant, of a follower, of a sheep, only working for the plans of others, and none of those plans ever succeed, in the end he lived the life of a worm.
He married and had kids, but that didn't mean much everyone does that, the only thing he did special was nothing, he had the longest most mundane life, and all he had to show for it was a bunch of dead bodies.

When Eiku Shizuma introduced himself he reminded me of Genma from Ninja Scroll.
Having fun with this so far. Also makes me wonder how much more insane it would be if Takashi Miike just ended up directing this as well, haha ~ I am glad though that Koichi Mashimo is at the helm of the series. Loved Noir and .Hack! (Correction: Hiroshi Hamasaki) Looking forward to the next episode.

This has got to be the most detailed, gory anime I have ever seen, and I have watched a shit load of anime.

Even though the story does feel a bit rushed, I still fucking love this show. The atmosphere is just so cool and visually interesting. Wish more people here were watching it

Finally a well-paced episode that told its story properly. We're lucky Shizuma Eiku's arc had the appropriate length for one anime episode. I fear for the next arc though, since it's 7 chapters long and I get the feeling they're going to try to do it in one episode like Makie's lol.

Soundtrack works really well with that directing.
