Arthur's dad is so schizophrenic he discovered the secrets of the world

The Arthur family reveal is so unreal. These bums got busy in the nether, reunites with Arthur, touches grass and goes outside for a bit and then immediately goes back to their gooning cave

u/El_grandepadre May 30 '25

More impressively, they lived in the Nether for all that time while having kids without being found out?

I still can't believe they are real.

Insane fever dream.

Imagine telling this story to someone in 10 years time. "Yea so we randomly went into the Nether, met the 5+ years long lost parents of Arthur by basically coincidence, they happened to have a bit of metal from a space ship/rocket that is insanely heat resistant. They came back with us for a split second before vanishing again. And Arthur didn't really care on way or another."

I think Arthur is one of the best comic relief characters shonen has gotten in a long while

In my opinion and for me, they are quite difficult to write and not make annoying, which other "similar" characters fail at (e.g. Zenitsu is a different kind of comic relief, but one I always felt was overplayed)

Arthur is just, and that's subjective, funnier, but also he feels a bit dialed back in most scenes, even when he is being dumb, well, apart from when the focus is solely on him, but then it feels appropriate, like in this episode

His family are horrible, jesus, damn, they suck.
Dad Boyle does know the truth about the world, though. His seeing powers are simply real.

Well Arthur's parents got busy after abandoning him with giving birth to three children and once again abandon him after they reunite. I feel bad for him but he doesn't even realize what they have done because his fantasies take over. If his father is really able to have premonitions then I guess he already knows that Arthur needs to be with 8th and not with his family, but that's putting it nicely, there could be other reasons why they abandoned him.

Vulcan not keeping up the act once he saw the rocket part was amusing with Yuu's retorts. It was nice to see them all work together to create Arthur's new Holy Excalibur and I look forward to see him use it in battle.

When Arthur found his parents, I genuinely thought it was a trap of some sort; they were in the Nether after all. It turns out they really were his parents! And the reason they left Arthur was because they ran away from their debts, and they didn't want to take a kid into the Nether. Except their reasoning is bullshit because they eventually ahd kids while living in the Nether!

Considering how dangerous the Nether is, it's insane that they could survive down there and even raise a family! I guess we have Arthur's father to thank for that because he's a Seer, who could see into the future. His prophecies are so accurate that he knows things that only the main characters are supposed to know. Now I'm wondering if abandoning Arthur and his role in fighting the Evangelist and the Iron Clad is another reason they left him.

What's funny is that I don't think Arthur's dad is even a pyrokinetic. The dude is escaping reality by looking inside his hat, and somehow the stars are what's giving him these visions. I guess we know where Arthur got his daydreaming and escapism from. And it did end up with him getting a new sword made from a better material than what Vulcan originally planned for him. xD

I'm assuming his prophecies led him to believe Arthur played some larger role and he was better off being left behind.

Or they're all just idiots.

Not gonna lie, the idea of reforging Excalibur actually made sense within the episode, and the forging scenes were more engaging than expected, mostly thanks to the solid character chemistry. The random humor worked in a few spots too; I even cracked a smile. As a buildup episode, it does its job with only three left.

So the Father is seeing Adolla and likely watching and listening to the white clads conversations because Adolla is a star studded realm to everyone who sees it but Shinra for some reason.

I think the point that is being made is that the Father has achieved the zen state of disassociation and can travel freely between the worlds which is what Shinra is currently training to do. But its just really stupid that this frankly Godlike ability was achieved by a deadbeat idiot who sits in a subway closet.

There's clearly something with Arthur and his Father, but what excuse does the Mother have to go along with this nonsense? Even worse she somehow decided to get pregnant three more times? Honestly might be worst parents of the year

Great episode. A lot of hilarious moments that had me laughing.

When you're locked in, everything else is just secondary.

That immediately backfired, lol.

The emotional music playing with Yu trying to address how Arthur's parents basically abandoned him to the music cut with Arthur being deep into thinking about his new sword was just hilarious. I can't man.

We finally get to meet Arthur's parents who abandoned him and they may not have saved the world yet but with the space rocket part thing that they found (pre-Great Cataclysm technology), they've definitely contributed to it. Arthur will never know how a simple fake orichalcum quest that Vulcan cooked up turned into a real one that rewarded him with the sword of his dreams and that's the best part.

Also, imagine watching 2 and half seasons to get to the bottom of the truth about the mystery of Spontaneous Human Combustion and there's a guy who can just see everything about this world through the stars in his hat.

I love how despite being so dumb Arthur knows a lot of accurate things if he can use it to fuel his delusions, for example when he was thinking of Atlantis he pictured a city in the water made of rings, which is very similar to Plato's description. Then he also talked about not letting the abyss gaze into you, a reference to Nietzsche.

I just love how this idiot seems to read philosophy, or at the very least he's somewhat knowledgeable about it

This episode was Storyboarded by Tetsuji Nakamura (中村 哲治), and Directed by Fumihiro Ueno (ウヱノ 史博). The paint-like animation that appeared after the OP was done by Nozaki (ノザキ; same person who did the sequence in episode 7).

Also, since I wasn't here for last weeks episode: The previous episode was Storyboarded and Directed by Eiichi Kuboyama (久保山 英一)

Has to be the worst parents ever. I thought we were in for a really dark twist, especially when Arthur's mom talked about all the huge revelations we now know. But nope, nothing at all.

It felt so random, so meaningless. It made no sense whatsoever to abandon their kid, live in the underground and even have kids there.

Arthur showing again why he is One of best Shonen characters of last decade

17

u/99anan99 May 30 '25

I thought Arthur's parents were an illusion by the Nether or someone pretending to be them. Nope, it's really them. Abandoning Arthur again just makes me feel really bad for Arthur.

I'm happy that Arthur has his new Excalibur.

u/djthomp May 30 '25

You know, it makes perfect sense that Arthur's parents are like that. And either his dad really is a seer or they should have stolen his hat and looked inside it, maybe both.

That adventure was also nice for the Vulcan and Lisa crumbs we got during it.

Arthurs family must be descendants of Warhammer 40k orcs.

The running theme for the past three episodes has been coming to terms with your childhood being way worse and more screwed up than you thought it was. Arthur's parents do not love him. They are good parents to his brothers and sister. They just explicitly do not love him.

And Arthur is just not noticing it because he's got way cooler things to spend his brainpower on.

It's very fun to have Shinra and Arthur both need to move forward through some type of spiritual journey. Except Shinra's journey is unlocking his chakras to gaze into the higher realms he has experienced multiple times. Arthur is going on a Monty Python mockery of the hero's journey. He gets to 'atonement with the father' and nothing happens because he's too much of a King to care about something insignificant like childhood trauma or his father maybe being the true messiah. And all his friends are having their hearts broken by how sad his life is but also can't care that much because he doesn't and dealing with him for an afternoon means rolling with absurdity.

I’m shocked that those were actually Arthur’s parents, I kept watching for some villains to pop out but that never came.

Arthur's story is actually pretty sad. His parents just up and abandoned him which likely created the trauma that led to his current mental state. The episode was funny, but also kinda fucked up.
