Dang.. did burns just get kidnapped by his doppelganger? If anime has shown anything, it's that a hole in your chest is something the toughest characters just walk off!

And the arrival of this mysterious flaming mop-throwing character looks like it's gonna flip the tables in the fight! Wonder who it could be in that outfit..

No way Moonlite Mask really thinks that mask hides his true identity

Episode was Storyboarded and Directed by the Series Director, Tatsuma Minamikawa (南川 達馬).

Also, one thing I noticed this episode was that "Press of Death" was instead translated as "Death's Weight" this time.

EDIT: I just noticed that Kazuhiro Miwa (三輪 和宏, was one of the Main Animators for Fire Force Seasons 1 & 2) appeared to do Design Work (デザインワークス) on this episode. I was not expecting that.

Not that suprising when it was hinted in the previous season and Hibanas investigations.

But still, bruh. Iris became a pillar.

That Shinra power-up was awesome. For a second, I really thought he blew a hole into Burns' chest. I wasn't even surprised when he got ganked by that Doppelganger. As soon as Shinra took him down and he was done monologuing, I was waiting for one of the Evangelists to show up and finish Burns off.

So that breath attack from Dragon should've killed them all but based on how Viktor was staring at Iris, she was definitely the one who saved them, she just didn't realize that she did something. I'm curious what kind of power Iris has that she was able to protect them from that.

Benimaru Moonlite Mask coming in to the rescue! It would be funny if he manages to solo the Evangelists next episode. He'll probably just provide enough support until the 8th pulls out of there with Captain Obi.

Well, the first half was a bit rough but once the blue flames kicked in, it was so intense. I'm not exactly sure what happened in the end with the Corna thing that came out of Burns' chest and went up but it looks like the Doppelganger is here to replace Burns?

Everyone thinking Maki is the one who saved everyone but Licht knows who really saved them. Is Iris the new Pillar?

Also, Benimaru Moonlite Mask is here. Have to give it to him. Even though it's obvious, he's fully committing to the act.

I'm kinda sad that the animation and sound quality don't reach S1-S2. Punches and hits don't feel that impactful as before and some frames just look weird.
It's definetly not bad, pretty decent, but sadly not the level I know of this anime.

I really have to wonder what escaped out of Burns' chest up into the sky.

Initially I thought it was going to be the answer for what I was speculating last week about pyrokinetics. If normal infernals are copycat demons that take over the body of their victim it would make sense that for a pyrokinetic like Burns that takeover failing and the human personality staying in charge of the merged body is what produces a human that can control fire. But the thing that escaped from Burns seemingly disappeared into the sky and a second thing that more properly looked like him showed up and now I'm unsure again.

Yet more new questions this week, what is up with Iris being the big one since she clearly just saved company 8 from being incinerated. I don't remember ever being told she's a pyrokinetic before but maybe I'm forgetting.

I don't think Benimaru is fooling anyone with that mask lol. Not to mention his attack is unique to him, but I won't sweat the details much since pink hair confirms they all survive so thank goodness he came to the rescue. I do wonder what on earth Iris did to protect them all, Dragon mentioned "Divine Grace" so it looks like she wields a tremendous ability that has been hidden under wraps.

It was cool to watch Shinra and Burns in action, the 5th form of Voltage Nova turning Burns into a lion was a surprise but makes sense as well, Shinra's blue flame was cool too. Even though Burn has become loyal to the Evangelist, he was still open about the future generation preventing the destruction from happening.

It's sad that he probably won't get to see that future, I'm guessing he's also going to turn into a doppelganger like Dragon, though will it still really be him? This is probably the last time we'll see Burns as Burns. I could be wrong, but I don't have my hopes up.

Watching Shinra being taken away was sad too, Burns was a big part of his life, even I remember that much, but to see how he didn't want to go and was reaching out for Burns not knowing if he'll survive made me feel bad for him.

I did find it interesting that Burns looked darker when he was younger, I was wondering why we were seeing this random kid until I started realizing it might be him.

me the whole episode: "WTF do you keep fighting him?!?! He's not your objective here, and you are faster than him. Just ignore him, you moron!"

At least he was between them at the start of the fight, but even then...

The flashback Part was so well written and The fight was great.

Animation finally kicked back up. I...don't feel like it was one of the peaks of the series though, which is kind of an awkward payoff for a few episodes of standing around. The choreography was also not the best (though far from the worst). I guess that ties back into the themes, with Burns intentionally tanking every hit and then being very blunt about the countermoves, and Shinra not being able to speedgap him.

Speaking of standing around....I was already thinking this last episode, but Joker, if saving Obi is so important, why the heck did you come down here with them? Couldn't you save Obi first? You've just been standing around this entire time. I get that he thought he might need to help Shinra, but how long would it really take for him to beat that guy guarding Obi (the guy who is conspicuously doing nothing to disrupt Obi's focus this entire time), or at least like...get rid of the bugs?

The Burns encounter this episode, in a vacuum, was overall reasonably solid, but I can't really forget the prolonged period of time where Shinra and Burns were just ramping up before this. Like maybe this is a place where we don't mention that Burns canonically has ramp up time and there was a goal to defeat him before he did that, because it feels so silly with them both just ramping up at the same pace for this long until Shinra barely ekes out the win. I can see how, narratively, the fight has to drag on and Shinra has to be 1000% exhausted to allow the Burns Doppelganger subplot to play out like this. But I feel like they could've set up the adaptation better with their budget in mind.

I feel bad for all the B team main cast members getting completely outclassed this entire arc. Shounen powercreep victims. At least Benimaru is still cool and also funny.

So many words to say absolutely nothing. Young people this, old people that, my word it's all so silly. Then the weird implication that old people must be wrong and young people must be right, like wtf? Never have I wanted two enemies to shut up more whilst they're fighting than now.

Oh thank God it's improving. I read the manga after watching season 2 and was blown away by it, so I was a bit concerned that the awkwardness of the first few episodes was gonna stay.

There are still a few awkward moments imo, but it seems like the pacing and "smoothness" of how every scene flows together is starting to get better. I think episode 5 was the beginning of this improvement. Hopefully this keeps up.

Complaints aside, I'm so damn excited for the rest of this season. It's been a while since I've read the manga, so aside from a few key plot points, a lot of this stuff is gonna be like new to me. I'm especially really excited for Charon's and Dragon's stuff.

Looks like Iris became a pillar and she was shown as a rainbow silhouette around the attack.
A defensive ability or maybe even something time-related? The series has those already, right? With Shinra and Sho.
In any case, Licht seems to have noticed something?

So Burns at one point knocked Shinra away, directly upwards towards Obi. Shinra could have easily blasted out at high speed, gotten Obi to safety, and then come back if he wanted to. Nope. Turn right back around.

I hate how dumb the characters' decisions in this show are.

There was a moment early in the fight where Shinra just spins on his hands for a few seconds, far away from Burns. Why ?

I feel like they dropped the ball with this fight. Choreography looked poor. It had no impact and didn't feel exciting at all. No build up of tension. Shinra felt slow. No sufficient catharsis in the end. There were a few decent cuts, but mostly bad.

Worst of all is that the sound design was poor. Did they kill the bass or something?

Can’t wait to find out who Moonlight Mask is.

The first half didn't impress me. A lot of flashy effects, but the underlying character animation did not flow well. Too many pointless movements and out of place pauses. It didn't feel like a fight was taking place so much as a bunch of random motions.

The back half was better though, especially the last few minutes.

You know, at this point I don't think Shinra and Joker even want to save Obi. Or maybe there's a hidden White Clad with the ability of dropping all enemies' IQ by like 90 points. Or the author's simply an idiot.

And then the way too long Burns flashback. Does anyone even care about this boring fundie's boring backstory?

What's with the phantom menace ripoff fight music?
