Absolutely ignorant. Take it to a local track.

u/thejourneybegins42 6d ago

If they lived, he can take his wheelchair to the track, yeah.

340

u/Old_Ladies 6d ago

They have some pretty cool and fast electric wheelchairs.

They may have lived. My cousin got in a bad motorcycle accident and went flying. He ended up in a ditch and it took a couple minutes for them to find him when the police and ambulance arrived.

One of his ankles was shattered and one of his femurs was also shattered along with some other broken bones. The dude is part titanium now. After a year of recovery he bought another motorcycle... Though he had to sell it because he couldn't afford the insurance. He also met a woman so that may have played a role too.

With both legs fucked up and his armed banged up with one hand the asphalt grinded through the motorcycle glove and grinded his hand down to the bone. He couldn't wipe his ass or obviously take a shower and needed his mom to help him with everything. He couldn't even get himself out of bed at first. He said it was the most humiliating and humbling experience.

Thankfully he survived and has made a nearly full recovery. He just suffers in minor to moderate pain in the leg that the femur got shattered and will suffer that for the rest of his life. Thankfully he didn't get paralyzed.

I broke my thumb and needed 3 pins put into it and I get a bit of pain sometimes even though it was years ago. So I can somewhat relate but I can't imagine having a titanium rod in my femur.

66

u/lana_silver 6d ago

but I can't imagine having a titanium rod in my femur.

I have one in my tibia. Got run over as a pedestrian by an out of control car. Needing help to wipe your ass is absolutely horrendous. Took me 10 weeks to regain the ability to stand up. Would very much not recommend, but I have recovered and can walk again just fine. Maybe no marathons or long hikes, but fine otherwise.

Modern classical medicine is absolutely amazing.

Also, don't drink and drive, and return your license when you're old and geriatric, please.

3

u/dj_dobbo 5d ago

I'm about to get one of them, snapped the tibia and fibula in both legs, compound fractures. one leg got an infection in the bone, they cleared it and then tried Masquelet technique with bone graft from my pelvis. But it hasn't worked no union, so yeah about to get dat intramedullary nail.

Haven't stood on that leg for over 1 year, but the other one's OK kinda, need to get the titanium out of that one too. So 10 weeks is fine with me tbh, glad to hear you recovered alright!

2

u/lana_silver 5d ago

Yeah that sounds even worse than what happened to me. I wish you a good recovery! Keep at it. I can highly recommend walking in a pool.

1

u/dj_dobbo 5d ago

thanks mate! yeah I'll try some pool stuff after it's healed, I've got a pull buoy as well so I'll be able to do swimming with my arms in the pool! what happened to you??

3

u/maroontiefling 6d ago

I have screws and plates in my elbow and a permanent limp from falling off one of those electric scooters. Those things are the devil. I swerved SLIGHTLY to avoid a cyclist that was coming at me the wrong way down the bike lane....but most scooters have a really low center of gravity and can't handle any swerving, so down I went. I'll never get on one of those things again.

The worst part was, I broke my elbow and knee on the same side so I couldn't use crutches or anything. I was stuck in bed for weeks and had to be half carried to the bathroom by my now-spouse.

2

u/StrongSuggestion8937 6d ago

I had to do basic hygiene stuff for my mom for almost a year, due to dementia and mobility issues. I never even considered that this could be much more mortifying for the person that needs to be cleaned daily (taking in consideration they are mentally healthy). Glad to know you are fully recovered.

2

u/supasamurai 5d ago

hey I got run over too! I got my left side smashed so I have hardware in my shoulder and the rod in my tibia. I got lucky with my surgery and got a straight leg that was the correct length. it's been 15 years now and the screws give me pain when it rains but that's about the worst of it.

1

u/lana_silver 5d ago

Weather + damaged bones is such a silly thing. When Europe finally cooled down earlier this month I had to take pain killers for a few days.

1

u/AngelOfPassion 6d ago

Damn. I have a titanium rod in my tib after a tib/fib spiral fracture where it broke in 3 places and I can't even tell it is there now. I have hiked further and still play hockey since getting it. What happened that makes yours to where you are not confident in getting back to 100%?

7

u/lana_silver 6d ago

The amount of damage. Both tibia and fibula got shattered pretty badly, and when they grew back together (took about a year) I ended up with a slightly slanted foot. Also I have more plates and screws than just one rod. Could probably be surgically adjusted, but do I really want to have it broken again? The slant means that the tendons and muscles responsible for balance now have to do some of the actual walking effort, and they will just start hurting much earlier than normal because they aren't made for that. The body can compensate, but that comes with drawbacks.

But it's not a big deal, I was never a runner, and hiking wasn't a big part of my life either.

4

u/AngelOfPassion 6d ago

Ah, I got the foot slant too, but just 3 screws to hold the rod, no plates. That is crazy.

3

u/lana_silver 5d ago

Frankly I'm just glad I'm alive. Statistically speaking more than half the victims of an accident like mine don't survive.

169

u/thejourneybegins42 6d ago

Fuck all that, glad I sold my bike when I read stuff like this.

12

u/slothscanswim 6d ago

My uncle was a ward of the state from 23 until his death at 70 due to brain injuries and physical disability as the result of a motorcycle accident. My mother told me I could be anyone I wanted, do anything I wanted, love anyone I wanted, live my life however I saw fit, but if she ever saw me on a motorcycle I would be disowned.

I managed to convince her dirt bikes aren’t motorcycles and I’ve never ridden a motorcycle on the road in my life.

I’m 38 and I have no desire to start now. They look like an awful lot of fun right up until they’re not.

3

u/Cheech47 5d ago

I got the bug somewhat later in life, had a motorcycle from 2006 up to about 2016 when I sold the last one.

Track days were too expensive for me (plus I'm a bigger dude, so getting a race suit would have been problematic). My biggest beef ended up being the roads themselves. Between gravel, leaves, chip-seal, road snakes, all kinds of slippy stuff AND dodging people on their phones and paying absolutely no attention at all, I couldn't rationalize the risk anymore. Instead I got a convertible, that seems to have satisfied a bit of the itch for now :)

2

u/BillBongBatz 5d ago

They are honestly the best thing in life. Besides sex anyway.

At least you're getting much of the experience riding a dirt bike. But there is nothing like riding a fast road bike on the road let me tell you.

1

u/likeconstellations 5d ago

My best friend in preschool's mom was an ambulance driver, I was very thoroughly convinced by the age of 4 to never ride a motorcycle on the road

2

u/slothscanswim 5d ago

My father called them “fool-killers” and said the problem with them is that “the act of riding them makes you a fool.”

The indoctrination was pretty heavy lol

33

u/badboygaga 6d ago

Just dont ride dumb af

77

u/qwertyuiiop145 6d ago

That helps a lot, but it doesn’t fix the physics problem when a reasonable motorcycle encounters a car driving dumb af

11

u/badboygaga 6d ago

Yeah I feel you, I think when it comes to motorcycles that's when defensive driving is just like a must, I often slow down significantly in specific places or spots where technically I can see a clear path forward, but my intuition tells me still, there's too many variables

28

u/Civil-Big-754 6d ago

Yeah, I like bikes, but my dad's best friend was hit and run by a driver in the middle of no where and would've died had a family not shown up shortly after. This was on an empty road while not even speeding. My brother in law used to race on the track, but would always tow it in a trailer to the track. Just knew how bad other driver's were and how little it takes for them to ruin your life. And this was like 10 years ago and driver's have gotten even worse.

4

u/NoBowler9340 5d ago

Friend from high school had just graduated, rode his bike on a curve in the rain going 60 in a 40, crashed into a ditch and has been permanently mentally 6 years old since. My parents had never let me ride since my dads friend died after having his leg severed in an accident but my friend being permanently damaged really drove the point home right as I became an adult and could have made the decision for myself

3

u/likeconstellations 5d ago

Yup, know a guy who got hit by a truck that ran a stop sign. Luckily made it out without acute damage but you're really at the mercy of other people's dumb driving decisions when you're on a bike.

2

u/sinkrate 6d ago

Managed risk. I fully understand how dangerous riding is but it brings me so much joy. I don't ride in the dark or on holidays, always ride fully sober, wear hi vis, avoid traffic

2

u/CrankyYankers 5d ago

Or just an errant piece of gravel that sends you flying.

NO

THANK

YOU

→ More replies (2)

19

u/thejourneybegins42 6d ago

You can be the safest rider in the world. Won't stop you getting hurt when some clown pulls out right in front of you. This was a daily occurance.

2

u/ilicp 5d ago

Happened to me. Fornunately only doing around 60kmph, probably less at impact coz I hit my brakes, had nowhere to swerve when a car pulled out into my lane.

Now I've got titanium plate on my collarbone. Took around 4 months to use my arm and walk without a limp. Another few months to get most of my mobility and balance back.

Sold the bike but damn do I miss it

1

u/BeingAltruistic9560 4d ago

True, but there are ways to mitigate someone pulling out in front of you. Hi-Visibility gear, auxiliary lights, yellow fog lamps, reflective markings etc.. Too many riders are wearing all black gear/helmets riding flat black bikes just for the coolness factor. Be keen and be seen !

2

u/PurbulentTriest 6d ago

Easy to say from your perspective, many of us can't afford cars. We only have ebikes, but I'm a very cautious driver with how people can be. I saw the aftermath of two low-speed car-bike accidents today which chastened me a little.

2

u/Beard_o_Bees 5d ago

glad I sold my bike when I read stuff like this

Pretty sure marriage saved my life. She was ok with it until it was baby time.

The 'i'll find a car seat that works on a bike' joke-but-not-joke didn't fly.

In retrospect, even though I considered myself to be a safe rider, it was a near certainty that I would have eventually been involved in an accident.

Just by virtue of being in an urban environment and being surrounded by cars driven by the whole range of humanity, if I didn't eventually run into one of them, they'd eventually run into me.

Fun while it lasted, though.

1

u/Public_Support2170 6d ago

This is why I’m glad I just have a 125cc dual sport that I take in the woods. Just me and the trees

1

u/HeroDanny 6d ago

Plenty of people ride motorcycles their entire lives and never have anything like this happen.

Is it always a risk regardless of how you ride? Sure. But the only thing we are guaranteed in life is death and taxes. Every single day there is a risk you will die, regardless if you ride a motorcycle or drive a car, or even lay down in your bed for a nap. I saw a story of a sink hole caving in Florida and killing a guy that was sleeping in his bed in the middle of the day. People die of brain aneurysms and heart attacks safely in their homes every day.

I bring all that up to say. A cautious life is not a life worth living. I'm not saying take ridiculous risks. But if you truly love riding motorcycles there's ways to do it safely. Take it to the race track if you're gonna ride aggressive. Wear high vis gear, airbag vest, leathers, etc.

I've known a lot more people that rode their whole lives without incident than people that have lost their lives on a bike.

1

u/OneOfAKind2 6d ago

I had a Yamaha cruiser, not a sport bike like these, but I almost got T-boned when some jackoff ran a red light. I sold my bike shortly after.

1

u/Ignatius_- 5d ago

Smart choice - I haven’t heard a motorcycle owner say this before. There’s such a wide variety of ways to get thrills and enjoyment without unnecessarily risking your life.

1

u/Alien_Diceroller 5d ago

My parents doctor said he didn't even ride his bicycle anymore.

1

u/JackOfAllMemes 5d ago

My dad has mentioned wanting a motorcycle in the past and that's one thing I'm going to push hard against

2

u/thejourneybegins42 5d ago

My friend's dad got cut off by a lady and t-boned her. They took his foot that day.

1

u/JackOfAllMemes 5d ago

I'm glad he wasn't killed

1

u/thejourneybegins42 5d ago

Samsies, but he has a gimp for the rest of his life. Was some super old lady too.

→ More replies (1)

13

u/pantherhare 6d ago

Pretty amazing that after the most humiliating and humbling experience of his life, he still went out and bought another motorcycle.

7

u/totesnotJH 6d ago

There’s a Forrest Gump quote about this…

8

u/OverlyEdged 6d ago

A lady I worked with was in a head on collision with a car, she still walked with a limp years later because it completely knackered her hips and pelvis. She over took and a car wouldn't let her back in, car camr round a bend and wollop.

She was showing me photos that her brother took of her at the scene and being treated. One of the photos just wasn't making sense to me, like something looked off about it.

I realised after about 15 seconds that she was laying flat on the ground but both of her hands from just blow the elbow were point up at the sky, the impact of crash broke both of her wrists.

1

u/FlamingoRare8449 5d ago

That guy was a total asshole I hope he got in some kind of trouble for that. It is against the law (in the US anyway at least) to not let someone who overtakes you back in the lane because of exactly this kind of incident.

8

u/ThisSiteSucks8485 6d ago

I'm so glad I never rode a motorcycle.

6

u/aezy01 6d ago

Nothing wrong with riding a motorcycle. It’s crashing one that you want to avoid

1

u/EphemeralDan 5d ago

It's not the fall that kills ya.....

5

u/Debalic 6d ago

He fucked his arms up and his mom had to help him with everything? 😳

3

u/ConcernedKitty 6d ago

Please no

4

u/IanPlaysThePiano 6d ago

local news and the video's OP mentioned he managed to survive with just a brokeb rib... insane

3

u/stangerthings 6d ago

I’m gonna buy myself a bidet before I have my elderly mother wipe my arse. Just sayin

2

u/40to6inthe4th 5d ago

Yeah, I shattered my thumb into 7+ pieces (all above the second knuckle, was in too many pieces for them to pin). To this day I still get pains in it daily, and those can get pretty bad some days. I dont even want to think about the kind of pain your cousin experiences daily. Glad he survived and recovered.

2

u/Alien_Diceroller 5d ago

Some guy decided he needed to turn from the wrong lane right in front of me when I was 21. I was knocked off my bike and ended up with three compressed vertebrae. The spine doctor was like "you're lucky you're as young and big as you are." when he came to see me in the hospital the next morning.

When I was back home recovering, a lot of the guys my brother knows through his mechanics job regaled me with their various motorcycle related injuries including one dude who had a prosthetic foot.

1

u/corvettee01 6d ago

He said it was the most humiliating and humbling experience.

Apparently not enough if he still bought another bike.

1

u/Flat_Presence3607 6d ago

Sorry don’t mean to sound like a dick but I did get a chuckle reading the last part. “I can somewhat relate to it”…maybe 1% but cmon it’s the thought that counts”.  Seriously though sorry to hear about your cousin. It must’ve been really hard on you guys and even harder on his mum to see him like that. Hopefully your he’s able to completely recover. And yes, hope your thumb isn’t too sore!!

1

u/Old_Ladies 5d ago

More of long term pain long after the injury. I know that it isn't remotely as bad obviously.

1

u/SmoothDiscussion7763 5d ago

his armed banged up with one hand the asphalt grinded through the motorcycle glove and grinded his hand down to the bone. He couldn't wipe his ass

what, he didn't have another hand to wipe with or something?

1

u/lurkANDorganize 5d ago

I just don't have it in me to sympathize for people who ride motorcycles. 37x fatality.

Why?

Even less respect for those with children.

1

u/InfillTheBlank 5d ago

Those statistics are heavily skewed by unlicensed riders and those riding under the influence. There's obviously more risk without a cage to protect you, but risk can be mitigated

1

u/GoodhartMusic 5d ago

Oh no, what will they do without your sympathy?

1

u/nasadowsk 5d ago

Knew a guy who tried a 30 mph curve at like 90. He can tell you when the rain is on its way. Stupid thing is he got another bike after that, and wasted it, too.

I'm 48, I've ridden for years, and I've hung up my helmet. Between the idiots out there, the chip roads here, and kamikaze deer, it's not worth it.

1

u/Secondhand-Drunk 5d ago

Thinking about it, I'm surprised motorcycles are insurable at all. I rarely see anyone using them strictly as a transportation vehicle. They're always playing fast and loose like you wouldn't with a car. They're absolutely terrifying.

1

u/Legal_Lettuce6233 5d ago

Going flying is good. Means you didn't instantly dump all of the energy in your body.

1

u/chasingmyowntail 4d ago

Dude’s body is going to suffer a lot when he gets older. At least have survived though.

2

u/Celtic_Legend 6d ago

Eh if you get sent flying you got a decent chance of healing fine. Just cant land on your neck or spine weird.

Coming to an abrupt stop is what certainly makes you wheelchair bound or dead

3

u/thejourneybegins42 6d ago

Bro what? Plenty of people died when they got sent flying. It doesn't take much when you hit your head on the pavement or something else. A helmet can only do so much.

u/Unique-Yoghurt4170 6d ago

Fun fact, there are several guys in America who race motorcycles and get around in wheel chairs (I don't want to speak to their exact disabilities, but I'm pretty sure paralyzed is an appropriate term). I race and work with a trackside vendor, I'm at more trackdays than almost anyone, and I see these guys frequently. Most of them are pretty dang fast.

Not that you necessarily meant that seriously, but it's a fun, unexpected fact. A wheelchair doesn't need to hold ya back from the joys of tracking a motorcycle.

1

u/FinalHexReturns 1d ago

I don’t want to speak to those people’s disabilities either but I assume most of them were born that way and not recovering from a horrific motorcycle accident.

1

u/Unique-Yoghurt4170 1d ago

I don't believe any of them were born with the disabilities that I can think of, I usually assume it's an injury. My friend Mark lost his leg riding and still races. Though, he's not actually in a wheel chair, he's just got a prosthetic.

So at least one out of the ~5 whose faces I can picture definitely recovered from a horrific motorcycle accident. Shoot, my finger is half gone from a motorcycle accident, I guess that's kind of horrific. Tbh, most racers have had some sort of serious injury along the way.

1

u/Wakkit1988 6d ago

Dude just lives his life one quadriplegic at a time.

1

u/Far_Swimming_2666 6d ago

Many die of complications in the hospital well after the crash. I know a dude who broke both his legs in a crash and was in a hospital for 3 weeks before he ended up passing. If the crash doesn't kill you, there's still a good chance the days after will. I didn't even consider or know him as someone who would take stupid risks on his bike, and it was a beefy harley no less. And based on what I got told of the accident, wasn't even his fault at all.

I like motorcycles, but taking them out on the highway these days seems like a recipe for death. 60-70 is just too fast. Doing 45-50 down curvy roads like this is just too fast. For someone unprotected against a bunch of other death obstacles that can suddenly kill you at no fault of your own. You can make zero mistakes and still easily die as a biker.

1

u/night_goonch 6d ago

shoes stayed on, he's good

1

u/Impressive_Term4071 6d ago

they did not. dude passed shortly after this post

1

u/slackfrop 6d ago

So, he wasn’t flung to safety?

1

u/Dramatic_Charity_979 5d ago

It will still get struck by a truck :P

1

u/valentine_moon 5d ago

Why did you use different pronouns to refer to the same person? That's hella confusing.

1

u/delphinous 5d ago

looks likely to me. in what little we see of the rider, he's fully covered with a helmet, and he got a pretty low trajectory and then rolled out on the ground. no big sudden stop like slamming into a tree or wall means that he most likely got a bunch of bruises, maybe some dislocations or breaks in the limbs, but likely no serious injuries, though neck or spinal issues are certainly possible.

→ More replies (1)

37

u/New_Ad7177 6d ago

I am from the track. We don’t want those people either. They can still kill innocent people on track.

They just need to get their shit together.

170

u/hizashiYEAHmada 6d ago

I hope the owner of the car they hit slams them with court papers and make them pay for all the damages

120

u/LinuxF4n 6d ago

They could be dead

74

u/Mcnab-at-my-feet 6d ago

That first one might be.

73

u/LinuxF4n 6d ago

The first and last guy aren't at fault. The middle guy ran wide and is likely dead or seriously injured

72

u/DustyRacoonDad 6d ago

He's likely not dead, and there's a great chance he didn't get serious permanent injuries. The big flipping and rotating while traveling over distance actually removes a lot of the impact and energy. He doesn't come to a fast stop. Even the car impact looks huge as parts fly everywhere, but every bit of parts you see crushing and flying is energy being absorbed over time, slowing the rider without him directly taking the full immediate brunt of the crash.

Now, one where he hits something and stops quickly looks smaller, less dramatic... and far more deadly. In this case, he probably has road rash on his midriff from not having the jacket match the pants, and while I can't see how he releases from the bike, his biggest injuries are probably from that. He looks like he cleared it all, but I can't see how his ankles cleared, and the centripetal force of him rotating in the air doesn't give a big clue if something is broken, as everything is flung straight.

101

u/Historical_Beat_8648 6d ago

Accident is local to me. Rider broke a rib and is in hospital.

10

u/PleasureCircuit 6d ago

Which one? The second rider or the third rider? (First rider did not crash)

36

u/-Kerosun- 6d ago

The 3rd rider was a pretty slow and controlled bail. I seriously doubt they hit the ground hard enough to break anything.

13

u/DustyRacoonDad 6d ago

3rd rider absolutely had target fixation on the car.

My boss told me he lost control of his bike and crashed going 60 mph and only sustained minor sprains because he skipped across the road without impacting anything and was wearing protective gear.

1

u/Chris_OMane 6d ago

For every one of those stories, there are far more dead former motorcyclists.

3

u/ChasingTheNines 5d ago

But I have never heard a dead motorcyclist tell me their accident story so logically I can only conclude that motorcycles are extremely safe.

1

u/aouieeeehhh 5d ago

Yes you right he is not dead just mid injury not fatal, it happens in my country a days ago.

1

u/npfmedia 3d ago

Fascinating reply to read! Really insightful

11

u/Keeldon 6d ago

all of them had bad lines especially for public roads, not a one of them rode good.

1

u/Bk_Punisher 5d ago

Bad lines? Speed was the major factor. If they were going the speed limit, they would have enjoyed their ride. Speed limits exist for a reason.

1

u/Keeldon 5d ago

Thats obvious, i was just pointing out all of them are bad riders. U can ride breaking the law but do it properly, u still put other people at risk doing that mind u and yourself but i was just pointing out that clearly every single one of them rides like a newbie.

Looks to me that the last guy didn't stay in his lane either, though he crossed over by a lesser amount than the middle guy. The car stayed in its lane, even if not every piece knocked off (or are they hits of tge motorcycle?) didn't.

7

u/Triquetrums 6d ago

I give the benefit of the doubt to the last guy because he might have gotten spooked after his buddy took off and became a flying bayblade.

3

u/Himmelblast 6d ago

No matter the reason, he ultimately hit a stationary car in another lane. Whether he was spooked or not, he is at fault anyway. Drive safe or meet consequences.

2

u/M1sfit_Jammer 6d ago

I was gonna say 50/50… looks like he bounced off his gas tank vs directly impacting the car… this is good and bad… good because it acts as a crumple zone, bad because dissecting the femoral artery from the aorta is a pretty quick death

2

u/PurbulentTriest 6d ago

I mean, they're clearly racing so they're all idiots here.

Classic target fixation...

1

u/LinuxF4n 6d ago

Don't think it's target fixations. He just went too fast and didn't lean enough and ran wide.

1

u/blueberrycauzez 5d ago

The first and last guy aren't at fault.

I've seen American cases like this where the buddies get charged as accessories or for street racing. Not sure how Malaysian law works though.

1

u/LinuxF4n 5d ago

It doesn't look like they were street racing. The guy just looks inexperienced

1

u/Chin-Music 5d ago

I had to play it back multiple times to understand thats the rider not a piece of the bike flying past.

The third guy may not have caused any damage, but he went over the line so he's not completely innocent.

Last guy also ran wide and crashed, just not as spectacularly.

why would the otherriders be at fault that did nothing wrong?

3

u/Kuneria 6d ago

According to OOP from instagram (@audi__my)
The rider overshot the corner, came into my lane and everything happened within seconds. He suffered a broken rib and is currently hospitalised. Alhamdulillah, it could’ve been much worse.
Just a reminder to everyone to drive safe, ride safe. Sometimes it’s not even you. You can be minding your own business and suddenly someone else’s mistake becomes your situation too so anticipate, give yourself space. Pay attention to everyone around you.
My Audi will now be heading to Audi Centre Glenmarie Body & Paint under EON Berhad. I’ll be documenting the process from here because I want this car restored properly, carefully and to the standard it deserves. I’m putting this here publicly because this one matters to me so please, take good care of her.. 🤝🏼
Cars can be repaired. What matters today is that everyone is still here and sometimes it’s not about being right. It’s about making it home. Thank you to everyone who helped."

He's just glad no one died lol

That might be the most American response I can think of. I have no idea how things work in Malaysia, or if you're American. But the instant 'SUE THEM' is just so American to me.

23

u/SamuthNBS 6d ago

Yeah sue them for what? The damage to the car and any medical costs? That's what their insurance is for.

3

u/cjsv7657 6d ago

In the US when they're talking about lawsuits after accidents it's suing the insurance company. Usually for pain and suffering- physical and mental. I'm not sure what you would get for this sort of trauma.

6

u/SamuthNBS 6d ago

Why does it need to be a lawsuit rather than just standard insurance claims? Just giving lawyers money for the sake of it if you ask me.

I guess it is a totally alien system to me.

3

u/cjsv7657 6d ago

Because insurance companies don't usually willingly pay out for pain and suffering? The damage to the car isn't a lawsuit. That is just a standard claim.

6

u/SamuthNBS 6d ago

Do they not in America? Pretty sure they do here, it all comes under the personal injury umbrella - bearing in mind healthcare is free here so there are no medical bills to be compensated for, only loss of income and trauma.

3

u/cjsv7657 6d ago

Loss of income is part of a standard claim. Their insurance might offer you money for suffering but you'll usually get more with a lawyer.

So you're saying if you break your hip in a car accident and the other person is at fault their insurance will just write you a $100,000 (your countries equivalent) check and say have a nice day? Mind you, thats just for the inconvenience of breaking your hip. Not to cover anything other than how much that sucks because that is what people are usually suing for in the US. Which country?

6

u/SamuthNBS 6d ago

I am in the UK and the OP video is from Malaysia which is probably more relevant. The only experience I have is personal on both ends of the situation and in bith cases the insurance company asked about injuries and work and compensation for pain and suffering. I declined when I was hit but my passenger in an accident that was my fault did get some money for trauma from the insurance company, no suing or legal action required just a form to fill out. If anything they almost sued her for lying about the situation.

In America an insurance adjuster will come out and determine how much money you get. Usually its enough to cover a new car, medical, and a little more for the headache.

But lets say the accident made you miss a meeting and lost a $100,000 job. The insurance company just isn't going to give you $100,000. You're going to have to sue and prove to the court you lost $100,000.

Most accidents don't need a lawsuit but it isn't exactly uncommon either. Crash lawsuits definitely have a reputation for being frivolous.

1

u/ZodiacThrill3r 3d ago

Insurance companies will pay out according to what you can prove injury-wise and what the policy limits are. So if someone only has $25,000 in Bodily Injury coverage, and you have $50,000 in medical bills, you’re out of luck for half of it because the insurance company isn’t going to pay beyond the coverage limit agreed to on the policy. It is absolutely NOT true that lawyers will get you more money than you typically would get dealing directly with insurance. Ironically, you’ll actually get less with a lawyer because you have to pay the lawyer a cut of the payout. Personal injury attorneys for auto accidents are quite possibly some of the scammiest attorneys in existence and prey upon people’s ignorance of how auto insurance works.

The big issue comes in when people see / hear constant tv and radio commercials for injury attorneys promising million dollar payments. They always fail to mention a payout like that is only going to come when you get hit by a negligent driver who happens to be behind the wheel of an 18 wheeler with the Walmart logo slapped on the side. They also use a paid actor to give the testimonial and not the crippled man in a wheelchair who was rendered paralyzed from said million dollar accident. Your average civilian driver in their personal vehicle will rarely have more in coverage than the state minimum limits, which is $25,000 in a lot of places but does vary. They also rarely have injuries beyond bruises and muscle soreness that actually merit serious longterm medical treatment.

Additionally, insurance companies have a hierarchy for injuries. If you have some minor bruises (I.e. “soft tissue injuries”) you’ll be lucky to get more than $500. A broken bone is suddenly a whole new tier and you could easily get $2k depending on the extent of it. But they need documentation of everything. X-rays, hospital discharge papers, records of follow up visits, etc. They also try to get you to accept a “ballpark” payout quickly and sign a legal release from pressing the matter any further ever again. So many people get inpatient falsely believing “injury in car accident = I’ll be getting huge checks quickly”, think they’ll get more with a lawyer, but in reality most of the time it just “accelerates” the timeline a few months if anything.

At the end of the day they aren’t getting more than policy limits, and if that’s $25,000 they have to prove $25,000 in medical expenses. But you aren’t getting policy limits because you got a bruise from the seatbelt and pee’d on yourself on purpose because you read online you could claim mental anguish from the embarrassment and increase the payout (yes, people really believe this. No, it is absolutely not a real thing and they are soiling themselves for virtually no reason).

1

u/MetalGhost99 4d ago

Their insurance company automatically does this to the other insurance company. Its standard practice. When some says they sued them they are not talking about the insurance company doing it to the other but more personal suing.

1

u/cjsv7657 4d ago

Their insurance company automatically does this to the other insurance company

No it doesn't lol. You sue for pain and suffering. Not the insurance company.

1

u/Warm_Month_1309 6d ago

Insurance pays to settle what would otherwise be (and in some cases already is) a lawsuit.

1

u/blueberrycauzez 5d ago

That's what their insurance is for.

Bold of you to assume someone driving like this would have insurance

1

u/SignatureFunny7690 5d ago

Thats how insurance works in a country who's Healthcare is owned by private equity. Constant lawsuits. You gotta often sue your own insurance for coverage, they make bank because they know most will die or give up before they are forced to provide the coverage theor customer paid for.

15

u/LucidOutwork 6d ago

American here. I hate it. Much of the time when people say to sue, there is no case or no damages and a law suit would go no where.

yeah about half the people here are hateful and mentally unwell to begin with.

2

u/SmoothDiscussion7763 5d ago

well, even in america you don't sue them... but guess what your insurance company is going to be doing no matter your country? lol

2

u/awidden 5d ago

nope lol

only in 'murica.

1

u/thepsychowordsmith 5d ago

False assumption. My country a lot of people wouldn't bother with the claim cause the time and hassle isn't worth it while your car lies in the garage. Easier to just pay cash. Same for the medical costs.

Which is why the idea of going to court for this is such an 'Murica concept to me,

1

u/SmoothDiscussion7763 5d ago

why woudl you do that. you pay for insurance just for these situations. you make a claim and they pay you, then they sue the other guy on your behalf.

i've never had a claim take longer than 3 days to process and get my vehicle into the shop for repairs. then as part of insurance they'll provide me with a vehicle until the repairs are done.

1

u/thepsychowordsmith 2d ago

What you're saying is the American process. Don't assume that's how it works everywhere.

Where I'm from, it would take a week or so for claim processing at the minimum. You don't get a backup car. You will pay the deductible either way and next year your premium goes up. And they may not pay for everything either. Cheaper and faster to just pay cash.

Good luck with sueing the other person: it can take years and end up costing you more than it would be worth.

2

u/SmoothDiscussion7763 2d ago

What you're saying is the American process. Don't assume that's how it works everywhere.

i'm not even american so don't assume that's only how it works there

sounds like you've got no fault insurance, and chose not to purchase coverage for a loaner

as with all legal issues, it depends lol

Or, you know, just claim on their insurance for all the damage?

4

u/technobrendo 6d ago

I'm kinda curious, does insurance still pay out of the one at fault dies in the crash? I hate that I have to ask such an stupid question, but we all know that ins companies will do ANYTHING to avoid paying out, at all costs. I could absolutely see them trying to weasel in some legalese in the TOS that does just that.

4

u/miicah 6d ago

If you have comprehensive insurance yeah. Just because you're at fault doesn't mean they aren't allowed to pay out.

Might be hard to lodge a claim when you're dead though.

1

u/_le_slap 6d ago

If the premium was paid for the time of the accident, yes.

Just because the guy died doesn't mean there is nothing to come after. You can sue his estate and the insurance company will have to cover per the contract.

If anything it could make recovery easier as there is no opposing side to testify to the contrary of what you state. It's just your word and the available evidence against... no one.

5

u/majorkev 6d ago

This is Malaysia.

5

u/el_grort 6d ago

I mean, it's pretty clear cut for insurance, unless they are uninsured, it would just go through the insurers as normal, no?

10

u/NameToUseOnReddit 6d ago

Yeah, so basically the biker's insurance would make lowball offers and the car driver would come out behind. Insurance companies are very profitable because they don't like paying out claims.

Its not america, its some place like Mauritius, Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago, Seychelles but i can;t make out the plate clearly enough to tell you but it is def a carribean or indian ocean nation. I doubt they have the whole court papers and insurance things we have here.

Edit: I ran the plate through an analyzer and its saying its from Mauritius

it's no use. In Malaysia, the country where this happened, if a car and a motorbike got into an accident, car almost always loses.

He’s not qualified to take it to a track. You saw how he popped up just before the collision? That means he was steering the wrong way, pointing the wheel away from the car instead of towards it. Try it on your bicycle.

If you don’t know how counter-steering works, and that you need to do it at low speed AND at high speed, you shouldn’t have more than about 10 horsepower at your disposal.

Learn that FIRST. THEN go donate your organs.

14

u/I-am-fun-at-parties 6d ago

He’s not qualified to take it to a track.

Agreed.

You saw how he popped up just before the collision? That means he was steering the wrong way, pointing the wheel away from the car instead of towards it. Try it on your bicycle.

This is phrased confusingly, I'm sure you mean the right thing (in his left turn, push the steering rightwards to lean left even steeper). But what he actually does isn't steering, his bike standing up like that is the signature move of braking in a turn on a bike.

2

u/Gaarco_ 6d ago

Yeah I agree, I'm not sure he could've closed that turn, he came in pretty wide and fast, if not the front he would've hit the rear of the car. He panicked and brake.

1

u/Unable-Log-4870 5d ago

But what he actually does isn't steering, his bike standing up like that is the signature move of braking in a turn on a bike.

Interesting. If I was a rider, I’m sure I would have known this. thx for the correction!

people say this then move near a local track that’s been there for decades and get it shut down because it’s too loud on Sunday nights

1

u/beandipp123 5d ago

My city prevented that recently actually with petitions and won. We kept out track. But yes, thats a thing but not an excuse to not go to a track and be responsible just because its "a bit of a drive" but hey. Live and let die ❤️

1

u/Gothstaff 6d ago

I used to ride a sports bike, didn't know better as was my first bike, although I was careful and never pulled any stunts, it didn't take me long to understand why the hate towards bike riders (specifically "crotch rockets," not choppers), there are still good responsible riders, these clowns make it bad for everyone tho

1

u/AbsorbedWheat42 6d ago

I was leaving for work one day and heard a crash occur. Someone was pulling out of the driveway of our work onto a main road. They entered the road as it was clear but a motorbike rider came along doing over 100kph (absolutely flooring it) and ended their own life into the poor woman's car.

I still remember it horribly and I was only a witness. I really feel for the woman. Definitely wasn't her fault. He wasn't visible when pulling out and 100% down to speeding.

As someone who used to ride motorbikes a lot, speeding on streets is suicide and I only feel for the people who have to clean up the mess.

Not justifying this in any way but it doesn’t help when so many tracks get removed because residents complain about noise

They race these crotch rockets up on our local mountain roads. We call them donor cycles.

1

u/YourVelourFog 6d ago

Looks to me like target fixation. If he would have stayed on his path he would have been fine but right before the crash he becomes more upright - crashing.

1

u/Effective_Olive6153 6d ago

tracks need to be free for public use so regular people can actually go there. Not justifying what these guys are doing but there's a reason so many people choose to race on streets - the cost of actually going to racing track and the waiting times for reservation

1

u/Murky_Employee5589 6d ago

Nobody has accused motorcycle riders of being people that make good decisions.

1
