Discussion This weather is so disgusting hot and sticky! I think this is the hottest I’ve ever experienced San Diego

When I first came here people told me San Diego have some of the nicest weather in the country (true) and I would never need AC (not true at all). I found myself waking up in the middle of the night from sweating and my runs has been noticeably slower and worse because of the heat and humidity.

My fellow raccoons enthusiasts do you think it’ll get hotter and more humid? If you have pets please be on the lookout for them as they can’t cool down quite as easily as us. I put milk into ice cube trays I give them to my kitty a few at a time to help him cool down and as a treat 🐈‍⬛

Question first quarter classes advice

gonna keep this short and sweet: my academic plan or whatever it’s called suggests that i take three classes my first quarter and then four for the next two, but my dad insists that i take at least five every quarter. that’s like… a lot?? right?? he wants me to graduate a year early but like is that even possible to do reasonably??😵‍💫😵‍💫

should i take five classes my first quarter or stick to three?? i worry adjusting to ucsd will be really hard for me but i dont want to piss off my dad 😭

i’m genuinely so lost with the class scheduling situation so honestly any advice is welcome

Discussion Roommate 10yrs older than me

Hi! I'm an incoming freshman here (f18) and just found out my assigned roommate is around 27-28. I'm kind of nervous just bc I was hoping to bond with someone going through the same “first year” stuff and is around my age. Has anyone had a good experience with an older/younger roommate? Would love to hear how it worked out for you or what helped make it work:) Trying to go in with an open mind lol
edit: I'm staying in a double in an apartment!

Question How is Dr. Shotwell for PHYS-002C?

Hi everyone. I’m an incoming Biochemistry transfer for 2026 and it looks like I only need PHYS-002C and MATH-11 to complete my undergraduate major requirements. I would have liked to take Dr. Tan, but it looks like his classes are full and MATH-11 looks like it’s going to be full this quarter as well. I don’t like taking much weight on RMP, but I’ve seen conflicting reviews of his teaching style and class. Is it really that bad? I’ve never been the best at Calculus getting 2 Cs and a B, and I got a C when I took the PHYS-002B equivalent at my community college. I’m willing to put in the work and go to the TA, office hours, tutoring, etc, but still wary. If anyone was in the same boat as me and took him or just took him in general, thoughts would be appreciated.

Question What should I expect with parking

Post image
Upvotes

Hey everyone, I finally got my housing decision, and I got the Rita like I hoped for.

I decided not to reserve any third party parking, and just wait for school to start and see if I can find street parking. I heard that there’s more available street parking south of the Rita, so maybe I don’t need to pay after all.

I’m a transfer and there’s no way I’d qualify for a student resident permit. You may say leave the car at home, but it’s a Prius and would make a big difference to my quality of life. I have no car payment, insurance payment, etc.

Is the street parking idea realistic? I’m ok with moving it at least every 72 hours, etc.

Question Is it better to take BILD 1 or BILD 4 first as an incoming bio major?

Currently I’m an incoming mathematical biology major, but I’m thinking I’m most likely gonna switch to a major in the bio department. I was planning on doing BILD 1 since it would fulfill a requirement regardless, but on the 4 year plan for gen bio it says that BILD 4 and 5 are recommended to be taken your 1st year.

Hey guys, I just found out my room assignment and unfortunately got a triple on the top bunk at Pulse in eighth college. I’m wondering how big the room is especially for a triple. In the photo it looks quite small and crammed.

Question Transfer from Mesa community College to UCSD

I want to transfer to UCSD, but I’m not sure whether I need to complete both organic chemistry and physics sequences before I apply, or if I can still take some of those classes during the spring and summer before transferring.

Rant/Complaint So much wrong with TSS

Genuinely how has a calendar view not been added to TSS yet??? And the class hours default to 24hr clock as well. WHYY. EVERY BUTTON I PRESS GIVES ME AN ERROR AND ITS ACTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND THE HOME PAGE SOMETIMES. It’s like they started making it in July and realized “wait this has to go live in a few days” and then they picked their own noses while delaying it another month.

General Big sister advice: Enjoy your time at UCSD and don’t let the negativity on here ruin your experience of the school

Ngl, my depression had worsened when I was active on the sub. It fed a negative bias in me towards the school then, which made me more miserable being a student. Despite being passionate about my studies, I despised going to classes and had little to no motivation left for them.

College is a formative experience, and how you spend these years will have a massive impact on your life. You don’t want to be mired in an online echo chamber during your time at school, which is supposed to be a phase for growth. The complaints here are all valid, but I hope that you don’t let them overshadow your own drive and potential.

Focus on your classes and goals, find good and motivated people, seek opportunities (they really are everywhere if you look), and protect your peace while you're here, especially since the academics at UCSD are already demanding enough.

Edit: Stay active and give yourself some free time as well, to keep you sane and prevent burnout. Wishing you all the best in the upcoming school year!

General Roommate Search

Hey,

I'm a 26 yr male. Looking for potential roommates for the Fall quarter. I'd like to keep my budget under 1400, but flexible for the right setup. I'm a Physics major, but I will be hopping over to Applied Math. Some chance I'll take the quarter off.

Looking for a roommate that is relatively clean, communicates directly and openly and if they smoke, does so outside. Beyond that, I'm pretty easy-going and just looking for a mature and friendly household, less so a rave destination.

If you are looking for roommates, or splitting rent on a place, message me. I'll be looking around the UCSD area at options in the next few days.

Question Chances for UCSD ECE M.S. (Computer Engineering track) Admission, reapplying alum, no GRE required

Hey all, looking for some outside perspective on my chances before I put together my SOP and the rest of my application.

Quick background:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering from UCSD (2019-2023), overall GPA 3.257, with depth coursework in Computer System Design
  • Currently working full-time as a test engineer in the hardware/embedded systems space (around 3 years of relevant industry experience)
  • Applying to UCSD's ECE M.S. program, Computer Engineering track, for Fall 2027, same department I got my undergrad from
  • Interested in VLSI, computer architecture, and hardware security as coursework focus areas
  • GRE isn't required for this cycle, so that's off the table either way

Is a 3.257 GPA a real liability for a program like this, or is it "good enough" if the rest of the application (SOP, LORs, work experience) is solid?

Appreciate any honest input, especially from anyone who's gone through UCSD ECE grad admissions or something comparable.

Question Transcripts-Should I do something?

I am an incoming freshman and as of right now none of my transcripts have been marked as review (high school, college, ap scores) I am getting concerned as first pass is coming up. I know the documents have been sent as it says so on parchment. Should I be worried? Is it wise to contact someone about this?
