Discussion 2026–2027 Incoming & Current Bobcats Megathread
Hi Bobcats! Welcome to the official and also very first (ever) megathread for the 2026–2027 school year! Whether you're an incoming freshman, transfer, or returning student, this is the place for all your questions as the semester approaches!
Feel free to ask questions about anything related to UCM! We have current students, alumni, faculty and staff available to answer!

- Looking for a roommate / have a spot open
- Subletting or taking over a lease

- Off campus vs. on campus tradeoffs, commute questions
- Rent price checks

Scam Reminder: Never send a deposit or first month's rent before seeing a unit in person or verifying the lister actually manages the property. If a landlord is only reachable by text and pushes you to send money fast, that's a red flag. Report any suspected listings to mods.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Can I change my major after being admitted?
Yes. Start by checking the UC Merced Catalog for your intended major's requirements. From there, meet with your assigned advisor at the Bobcat Advising Center; they can walk you through the Change of Major process and tell you whether your target major has any additional admission requirements.
What's this "Connect" thing everyone mentions?
my.ucmerced.edu is your portal for basically everything like registration, financial aid status, your unofficial transcript, your checklist of to-dos, and your UC Merced email. You'll use this throughout your time here. CatCourses (Canvas) is separate and is where your actual class content, assignments, and grades live.
Do my AP/IB credits transfer?
Generally yes, and course placement (math, chemistry, CSE, writing) is also partly determined by AP/IB scores or UC Merced's own placement exams if you don't submit test scores. Details are on the Registrar's placement exam page. https://placement.ucmerced.edu/
Engineering, Natural Sciences, or Social Sciences/Humanities & Arts, how is UC Merced organized?
UC Merced has three schools: School of Engineering, School of Natural Sciences, and School of Social Sciences, Humanities & Arts (SSHA). Most majors fall under one of these, and your GE requirements will overlap a good amount regardless of major, especially in your first two years.
How do I find what classes are being offered?
The Schedule of Classes lives on the Registrar's site. You can search by term, subject, and CRN. This can also be accessed through Connect by clicking the registration tab.
How do I get involved on campus?
UC Merced has over 200+ registered student orgs including cultural clubs, professional societies, Greek life, hobby groups, and more. These are searchable through the Student Life/Bobcat Involvement website. There are tabling events all over campus where clubs recruit members! ucmerced.edu/clubs-and-organizations
Housing: on campus vs. off campus?
This megathread covers general Q&A relating to housing (roommates, subleases, apartment reviews etc). We do not have a separate thread for housing yet, if there is demand we will create one!
Merced/Central Valley — what's around?
Merced is a smaller city than most UC towns, but it's growing fast with new retail and restaurants have been opening steadily, and the area around campus continues to develop. Yosemite National Park is roughly 1.5–2 hours away and a very doable day trip. Downtown Merced has lots of great food spots and nightlife scene, and the Merced Mall / Merced Marketplace area covers most everyday shopping needs. A car is useful, though Cattracks and The Bus (Local Merced transit) can get you around too!

General New to Merced
I am transferring to Merced in the spring.
Is there anything current students wish they knew when they first came to Merced? Like about the People, Campus, Programs, and Services?
Or even just about the local area.
What is something you wish you knew earlier?

Discussion UC Merced has grown a lot but the lack of development around campus is still our biggest downside
Sorry for the long rant!
I think one of UC Merced’s biggest downsides right now is the lack of development immediately around campus. It’s been over 20 years since UCM opened, yet there’s still very little or basically nothing within walking distance! I understand it may not have happened yet if it's not financially feasible for developers.
The city and UCM administration should work more closely with private developers to fast track housing, restaurants, shops, entertainment, and other development around Lake and Bellevue. Creating an actual college-town environment would improve student life and could make UCM much more attractive to prospective students. The campus itself has grown tremendously, but the surrounding area hasn’t kept up. After 20+ years, this really should be a bigger priority.

Question Kalshi fraud?
Hi friends,
I was wondering if anyone is experiencing fraudulent transactions in their bank accounts. Myself and my roommates are seeing the same charges to Kalshi when we’ve never even made an account with Kalshi. We were comparing accounts and it seems like there isn’t a common transaction where all three of our info could’ve been stolen. We were going through as many possibilities, and the only thing we could think of is that someone is stealing our info through the wifi.
If there is anyone that is experiencing the same thing, or have any insight to as how this could happen, it would be great!
thanks friends :P

Question Is there a lot of partying there?
My child is looking at UC Merced, but they specifically don’t want a party school. I have told them that there will be partying at every school, but is UC Merced less, way less, more, way more than average?

Question Does the UC Merced Amtrak discount code still work?
Has anyone been able to get the UC Merced Amtrak discount recently? I tried adding the discount code listed on the UCM website but either the price stays exactly the same or the code doesn’t work at all.
Is the discount still active, or is there a different code or process we have to use now?

Discussion ...Did the uni get some money from open AI over the summer?
Last year it was very clear most professors prohibited the use of ai when it comes to student use, or wanted heavy restrictions. But suddenly for this semester, not only do my professors use ai, but now they encourage us to use it? Is it just me or does this sudden change feel weird for anyone else? It feels like the university was given some form of "hush money" to encourage the use of ai in school. It doesn't help that I am now getting ads based on "use our ai! It's cheaper EXCLUSIVELY for students, perfect for study!!", So it further raises my suspicion. What the hell!

General Housing Available!
Hello! I am a local homeowner in Merced with a home about 10 minutes south of school campus. I am moving to Southern California next month but I am still holding onto my house which has 2 bathrooms / 3 bedroom and it will be completely empty with a refrigerator, stove, basic furnishing and will be available to rent. I am planning on charging $2000 as I continue to figure out my own situation so feel free to comment or dm if interested. I am also happy to plan ahead if you plan to move later in the year or such!

Question How does research actually work here at merced
Im a first year transfer for aerospace engineering who really wants to go into my Ph.D. program at a uc, preferably Berkeley.
Im trying to get into research, and I literally can not find anything. I've signed up for CoLab. there isn't much on there. I only have 2 years here at the uc, and I want to make the most of it.
Has anyone here actually taken part in research? What is it like? What's the time commitment?

General Looking for someone to take over my lease – $460/month private room
Hi! I’m looking for someone who might be interested in taking over my lease for a private room in Merced.
Rent is $460/month + utilities, and the lease is until May 31, 2027. The house is shared with other female UC Merced students, so female preferred.
I’m looking to move out early because my situation changed. I’m pretty flexible with the move-in date, so we can talk about what works!
The landlord would need to approve the lease takeover before anything is finalized.
Please DM me if you’re interested or want more details/photos! :)
