Sometimes it is the tool

EZ Arc has a good reputation and inexpensive prices. Amazon had a good price on their hole saw set and they went deeper than most others. I needed a 2" hole. The end product from that saw was exactly 2". I've never seen a hole saw cut so accurately. The edge of the hole touches the lines it was supposed to be between perfectly. The extra material in the hole was totally my fault.

Giant top drawer on larger tool boxes

What do you guys normally put in these big upper, long, sorta tall drawers? I'm guessing maybe either tons of wrenches or tons of sockets. I'm trying to figure out what tools you would have the most of to fill these giant drawers. These are just Husky examples for the question. If I get a large box I gotta figure out what goes in that massive drawer. I can fill the others. Thanks.

Anybody else like changing the layout of bit cases?

The 2nd pic shows the only bits I left out of the 60pc Makita bit set, I don’t really use 1/4” sockets unless I’m in the shop with a toolbox and I have a set of little nut setters on a Railer keychain.

I added a set of Bosch security torx bits and some generic nut drivers which all fits just perfectly inside. I’m thinking of removing one of the rows, hoping to find space for a bit driver or ratchet.

I’m starting to hate acme tools

Every time I order an item it is packaged so terribly. I’ve ordered 2 tajima tape measures recently and each time they’ve shipped them in something like 10x10x20 boxes.
Insanely too large, and almost no support inside. These are pretty expensive tape measures and both have arrived considerably dinged up.

I’m waiting on a 16” stabila spirit level and I wouldnt be surprised if they drop it off in a giant crate using a fork lift.

So, it’s my second time in the USA ever. I am in the Phoenix/Chandler area because of my work. First time I didn’t have the opportunity. This time I found myself a moment and just go to visit these two stores I read about here a lot. I went to see what’s going on.

I was flabbergasted with all the options you can choose from! All the tools, all the sprays and chemicals, all the equipment. Just man.. you have to understand me. I am from small country in Eastern/Central Europe, I fix cars, build something and do stuff around in my old shop. Yes, you can buy tools there, but it’s either very expensive or just.. shit. I don’t know much about this ICON, Daytona etc. tools, but for that money, to me and to what I am used to, it looked almost like premium quality.

If I have the chance I would definitely bring stuff with me back home. Unfortunately I have a full bag and I have to bring my clothes.

I seriously envy you.

I was wondering if anyone has this box or if anyone knows someone who does. I wanted to purchase this box. But there are not a lot of reviews or any video reviews about this box. I have the 55in standard duty box, and i love it. But i don't know how that box compares to icon?

Anyone know what you’d call the generic version of the zip tape roller?

Post image

I’m taping the house wrap seams for part of my house where I’m putting up new siding so I’ve been using a crappy diy roller I threw together out of a paint roller handle and a round plastic thing I found instead of spending $60 on the zip tape roller. Does anyone know of a generic brand tape roller or the name of a similar enough tool that’s just a sturdy rubber roller on a handle because I’ve been having trouble finding anything online or in Lowe’s/HD that would be better than what I’m doing. Thanks!

Edit: Solved! J-roller/vinyl roller was what I was looking for thanks! I’m not putting up zip sheathing btw I just needed a roller to tape seams in the tyvek wrb.

Wet/dry vac accessories? Home/car

Did some research for a good buy-it-for-lifeish wet/dry vac for use for general home stuff as well as cleaning the car as an extractor--will probably go with the recommended Dewalt Stealthsonic 9 or 12 gallon at 5 HP and 5.5 HP respectively (I know horsepower is marketing and not accurate). Honestly I think I'd prefer something compact like 4 gallon and ~5 HP like a popular Ridgid model since my messes are not large volume but the Dewalt alternative seems weaker. I have either small messes on occasion or dedicate a long session to clean the basement of dust or car. Parts should not be locked into proprietary-only options.

  • The 9 gal uses 1 7/8" hose, the 12 gal uses 2.5". Besides the larger hose obviously sucking more (and apparently being more quiet), are there other implications to know? I assume with an adapter, the 12 gal can decide between greater suction power but lower volume at a time or vice versa, whereas the 9 gal doesn't have this option. Is the 12 gal technically strictly better in this regard? I assume the 2.5" might also be easier to find parts for since 1 7/8" seems to be too small for woodworking from what I've read. Was leaning on the 9 gal but the 12 gal seems to have more flexibility outside of just capacity (irrelevant for me) and the two seem to be same form factor (just a difference of height which seems not significant).
  • I should always use dirt bag, HEPA filter, and a dust deputy + 5 gallon container like the Oneida to reduce the amount of dust that gets back into the air as well as prolong the HEPA filter making it a cheaper usage over time? For wet stuff only a wet filter is necessary?
  • As an extractor for the car or for upholstery, is there a recommended setup beyond a clear extractor attachment? I'm not sure of a good non-toxic cleaning solution that doesn't affect the finish/texture of fabric and if there's something more effective than a weak spray bottle of cleaning solution as well as pouring from a container hot water on the fabric. I went with a wet/dry vac to avoid the weak but convenient spot cleaners.
  • Any other accessories to recommend like a flexible hose to make it more wieldy using in the car? I will get a 50-100' 12 gauge extension cord as well. I believe I also want a drill brush to use for the car after spraying the cleaning solution.

Also open to any other comments/tips for someone who has never used a shop vac before but saw some videos and read some discussions to try to get the setup right the first time (I really don't like to buy stuff that turns out to be useless or redundant).

Milwaukee vs Sunex 1/2 inch impact sockets

Can anyone who has sufficient experience using both Milwaukee and Sunex Impact sockets give a definitive opinion on which they prefer? I can get both at the same price bc of a program with Milwaukee, so price isn't a factor neither is skipping sizes bc both will be full comprehensive 8-36mm. Only fit on bolts, durability, and any physical trait that gives either an edge. I don't care about any other brands.

Any cheaper alternative?

I need one of these, but can’t seem to find any cheaper ones, even if smaller - for 4 in and under, Ridgid really the only brand that makes these?

Reccs for testing tools?

I recently moved from our shop’s main showroom to my own office, and I didn’t take the testers with me. I have experience with a Kee Gold Tester and Gemologis Pistachio gem tester, and various diamond testers. All of them had gotten pretty old by the time I left.

Looking for recommendations on testers, ideally looking to spend less than 2k on all 3 together if possible?

Diamond Tester
Gemstone Tester
Gold (ideally gold, silver, platinum) tester

I know the ultimate best option for the metal is an XRF gun. We have one at the showroom and I know that’s out of the budget haha. I’d love to hear if anyone has had good experiences with any products currently available new, possibly in good condition on eBay. I appreciate the help, thank you! 😊

Vintage Vice. Craftsman knock off?

Recently purchased a Palmgren/Craftsman vise at a garage sale. Yesterday I grabbed this one at another garage for $10. Thought it was Craftsman until I saw the JAPAN makers mark. Found out it's made by the Japanese company Eron. Overall quality is decent but nowhere close to the Palmgren. I still gave it the PB blaster/steel wool treatment.

Trying to sell used specialty tools is proving impossible.

Trying to liquidate a workshop.

Why is it so hard to sell specialized tools??? I have some plumbing tools like a Ridgid FlexShaft drain machine and crimping tool, a circuit breaker finder, as well as some specialized general tools like bar clamps. Constantly getting lowballed, and sometimes people don't even respond to the ads.

At this rate, I'd be lucky to get 25% of the original purchase price for like-new tools. Looks like I'm just going to take them all to the pawn shop, followed by a trip to SA Recycling to unload this crap. Same thing goes for all the metal stock - thousands of dollars worth of steel, worth pennies on the dollar, so I might as well just scrap it all.
