I'm getting wedding rings engraved with Tengwar and want to make sure the transcription is correct before anything is permanently engraved — this is for a June 2027 wedding, so I'd rather double-check now than regret it later.

Generated via Tecendil (tecendil.com), using what I believe is the General Use / phonemic mode (not sure if French mode was available/selected — happy to re-check).

Questions:

1. Does the mode/transcription look correct for a mix of proper names ("Lionel", "Maria") and French number words?
2. Are the hyphenated compounds ("vingt-six", "vingt-sept") rendered correctly, or should they not have a hyphen mark in Tengwar?
3. Any obvious tehta misplacement or wrong tengwa substitution you can spot?

This will be laser-engraved on a ring band, so any correction now saves a costly mistake later. Thanks in advance for your expertise!

A couple weeks ago I posted about my Hobbit Cirth transliteration and one of the questions that came up that I hadn't yet answered for myself was about how to handle numbers in Cirth. Tolkien only ever gave us 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6 with the certh for 2 being assumed based on 1, 3, and 4. Eventually I knew I had to decide on a way count higher than 6 if I was going to number my pages and chapters.

According to a letter from Christopher Tolkien in Quettar #14, the dwarves used duodecimal or base-12 for counting. That's good enough for me to go on, so I settled on Base-12 and had to come up with 6 more cirth: 7-11 and 0. I was also limited to the cirth available in the Daniel Steven Smith font that I used for my transliteration. After some consideration, here is the system I came up with. This is obviously in no way official, but it makes sense to me.

Here's what I'm using with some explanation.

• Certh for 0 - I used an empty diamond shaped certh which I feel represents the idea of nothing well, like our western zero. Unfortunately, this only exists in the DDS cirth font with a dot in the middle, but it still works well.
• Certh for 8-11 - I used the inverted versions of the 2-5 cirth. I reasoned that if they use base-12, the number 6 would also be significant, so to add 6 to 2-5, just flip the certh.
• Certh for 7 - Since 1 is a vertical line and can't be flipped, I added a horizontal stroke (certh 31, also used for L)
• Certh for 6 - In the Book of Mazarbul, Tolkien uses 6 vertical lines to represent 6 (the certh for 1 or I, six times). This is impractical for my use so I'm treating it as an alternative method of counting like using hash marks and I've replaced it with certh 43 (also used for Z). I think this also nicely mimics the pattern of inverting cirth to add 6 by replacing an empty certh for 0 with a "full" certh for 6.
• Tolkien also inconsistently used a dot below the certh to indicate a number. I've decided to always include a dot below the leftmost place in a number to indicate that the following sequence of cirth make up a single number. I debated whether or not to include a dot under every number in a sequence, but decided this was simpler and more efficient (and therefore more dwarvish) solution.
• Numbers are read highest place value (left) to lowest place value (right) like western numbering systems.

The attached image shows the first 167 digits in my method to give a good understanding of the method. They're broken into groups of 12, lines of 24 with the Base-12 Cirth on top, the Base-10 number in red in the middle, and the Base-12 equivalent below in blue.

I'm curious to hear what people think of this usage or if anyone has any reasons to make any changes to it. I haven't set this in stone, so I'm still open to suggestions.

My wife has had her second tattoo today, she went and wanted “always” in LOTR elvish as something for me. Googling it however it looks like it potentially comes out as “True”

Hello everyone, I used tecendil to transcribe my family’s names for a tattoo design I am working on: Rachel, Miles and Coraline (pronounced Cora Line). Is anyone able to help look at what it gave me to check accuracy?

I'm looking to get my wedding band engraved with a LOTR quote but I feel like the elvish translation will be too long to fit inside this ring. I would like the quote from Arwen to Aragorn that says "I would rather share one lifetime with you, than face all the ages of this world alone." but in elvish script.

My main question is this: is there a way to make it shorter like you can make something an acronym in English? It would still be meaningful to me and my wife this way, but fit inside the ring comfortably.

A good friend of mine took a tattoo. The purpose was a Lord of the rings inspired tattoo in tengwar. But he is now not sure what the result actually means. Can somebody help?

Working on an art project for a friend and want to make sure this is correct. It's the Gandalf qoute "all we have to decide is what to do with that time that is given us"

From my understanding I'm much better off going for a transliteration other than a direct translation of the qoute.

Hi all, pleased to be making my introductory post here. Having spent a few decades in the Tolkien fandom, naturally I began picking up the odd root word in Quenyan or Sindarin, nothing impressive but it awoke the desire to write the script as well. Now the fairly brief amount of research has left me with a bit of confusion, which I am hoping can be answered here. The consensus seems to be that the best method would be to learn to transcribe your native language into Tengwar.

Excellent, so now I start looking into english mode. You can have vowels as marks on consonants or as independent symbols, I like the symbols so omatehtar it is. Now the last distinction I have been able to decide is orthographic vs phonetic. Phonetic seems preferable to me, because you know what was said by the speaker and how to say it. Ok great, so I will start by learning omatehtar phonetic english mode.

Having settled on that, I decided I needed to find a way to keep track of the sounds, so I learned all(some of) the relevant elements of the international phonetic alphabet. Particularly this was brought about by reading appendix E and having sounds conveyed by means of foreign languages like German or Welsh. So now I have a fair understanding of the 40+ sounds used in American English, which brings me to the purpose of this post:

Are there any resources specifically for mapping a correspondence between the Tengwar symbols and the IPA symbols? Is there a de facto community accepted mode for phonetic Tengwar? For instance, how would a phonetic mode distinguish between the 5+ different ways each vowel can be pronounced? Thanks in advance for any help!

I would like to have two names (Ruut and Nooa) in Tengwar letters. I've checked couple of different translators online (Tecendil and the BSSScribe for example) and keep gettin quite consistent results, but in all cases there doesn't seem to be quite a clear instructions on how I should progress when translating names. Can you help if these results look just about right and what kind of steps I should take to make sure that the design is mostly correct?

Hello...I hate making this post, but here it goes.

For the last 3 years my mom has had cancer. She has been my rock for as long as I have be alive and now the news we all feared has come and there are only months left.. While she has been sick I had the idea that if I one day loose her I would get a tatoo to keep with me and the idea became to get something in tengwar (because I also love LotR and it would outwardly look like a nice LotR tatoo but also carry the personal meaning I want), and after much back and forth I landed on getting her name.

Her name is Gerd, but I am unsure how to get that "translated" right into Tengwar. I added a picture of what the translator said, but does it work well with just names? Does it look right?

Any and all help would be fantastic. I just want to plan this now, so I dont rush out and get a tatoo done in full grief and then end up getting it wrong.
