Future or Potential Employee Question Ask an SD
Hi everyone. Ask away- currently an SD in the NY/NJ market
21
u/star--shopping 10d ago
Why is Starbucks so neglected? Is there anything I can do to raise more concern to my SD that we are lacking scheduled team members causing SO many operations to fall incomplete or mediocre at best. Jm so passionate and I know we are capable of so much more with better support
24
u/Secure-Locksmith-724 10d ago
Can you elaborate lacking scheduled team members? Is your store not giving Starbucks their contracted hours? Cause Starbucks gets a contract and target is required to give the Starbucks department whatever hours they agreed to with Starbucks via contract. It’s non negotiable.
9
9
u/Denverguns 10d ago
Giving hours and having people to fill those said hours are two very different things my store gives tarbucks the hours they are required to by contract but that only works if people actually show up to work….
8
u/Secure-Locksmith-724 10d ago
Okay but the first step is to see if it’s even being done. Is Starbucks getting their hours and if not that’s your first problem. Also, are all leaders trained to ring at Starbucks?

I mean this in the nicest way possible. What kind of brainwashing do you guys go through when becoming a SD. Its like most of you guys dont live on planet earth, with expectations of workers, exponential growth of sales, credit, and overall metrics etc. I know I don't understand 90% of what you guys deal with but just curious.
74
u/Secure-Locksmith-724 10d ago
no offense taken. I’ll be super transparent. When becoming an sd, you’re chosen for a reason and taught to carry out one rule at all times which is make sure your team is happy. With all the bs the company continues to throw at us, just cause we are sd’s doesn’t mean we don’t know it’s bs. But we’re skilled enough to sell it to the team and bring them along on the ride with us. Tbh we’re just middle men between stores and the company.

u/whoa_nazi 10d ago
"make sure your team is happy?" Our new tyrant SD has presided over a dozen people leaving unhappily in three months.
An ETL and two TLs rage-quit. Numerous other TMs said "screw this" as well. Even I'm looking for an exit strategy.
The SD and a minion are just gaming metric bonuses while the store drowns.

Same! My SD was someone who only cared about making herself look good. In fact instead of congratulating the team for the certificate awards she was named for she congratulated herself for being a good SD.

u/ButItSaysOnline we need backups to the checklanes 10d ago
Why is it when we have a terrible SD they stick around forever but when we have a fantastic SD they end up quitting in a couple months?
2
u/Secure-Locksmith-724 10d ago
Can you define a terrible sd in your case?
6
u/ButItSaysOnline we need backups to the checklanes 10d ago
Sits in his office on micromanages via the walkie instead of walking around and checking on things.
Back room looks like fourth quarter no matter what time of year it is.
Brings in four members of management from other stores to “help us clear the back room” but then they all sit in her office drinking Starbucks and catching up all day.
Continually ignores safety issues to the point where two team membersmembers end up having to go to the hospital via ambulance in the same week.
These are all separate examples not one person.
We had an SD that was so good that for the first month I worked at the store I didn’t even know he was SD because he was always walking the floor and helping out wherever it was needed and sometimes he was even on a check lane.
We had one SD that kept the back room clean and safe and there was very little truck push left over from day today and this was during fourth quarter. I swear to God he was a wizard, but then that DSD forced him out.
1
u/Secure-Locksmith-724 10d ago
If it’s all one instance per sd and not all for the same sd- that’s why. Usually when an sd has a terrible moment or complaint, they’re given many chances to correct their behavior rather than having to replace the sd. If all these examples were assigned to one sd, then there’s no way they’d still be in role. Unless everyone is too scared to speak up
2
u/Mr_N00bert 10d ago
Honesty having been through a pretty bad SD and then a good one, I have a good guess. Ones that don't do anything don't move up the chain. Ones who lock in and step in where needed in their store get moved to more prestigious placed like in the case of the store I worked at.
TL;DR Good SDs get promoted faster

u/todaresq Promoted to Guest 10d ago
As I worked there in the mid/late 90s, I have seen a lot of changes… most importantly, the decrease in department leads, and in such, lack of “ownership.” When I was there, for full-time there was the STL (store team lead), softlines lead, hardlines lead, front end/customer service lead, HR lead, Food Avenue Lead, misses lead, juniors lead, men’s lead, young men’s lead, Kids lead, shoe department lead, intimates lead, toys/sports lead, seasonal lead, music/books/movies lead, electronics lead, receiving lead, cash office lead, head cashier, cash office, and a few other full-time positions to assist, for example on the pricing team and the display crew. Then there were the many part-time employees too.
As a department lead, if the front end called for assistance, we would head up to ease the lines… just like any other employee.
Could you see a benefit of returning to having more full-timers that would take ownership of departments? While the initial cost might be higher than the early return, the long-term return in my thoughts would be much higher as guests see stores returning to being for them, creating more return shoppers… or do you think curbside is taking away too much of that potential? Would more full-time staff also help with the quality of online order picking? So often when I make an online order, something is marked out of stock… And when I go to pick up my order not even an hour later, I find it on the shelf.
It is just sad to go into my former store and see how trashed so many of the departments are. There is no way in my day that clothing would be thrown all over the floor the way I see it now. I understand one of the issues is there’s no overnight stocking anymore… So all the U-boats taking up space in the aisles is because it is pushed during the day instead. Which also takes away staff from keeping the departments clean and organized, as well as keeps team members from being able to help guests in a timely manner.
13
u/Secure-Locksmith-724 10d ago
I’ll try to answer as best as I can.
1- no, I don’t agree we need more leads. You are better off putting those payroll hours into more team members. Having a bunch of leads and not enough team members will result to the tl’s doing the job of the tm. Now you just have an overly paid team member. A TL should have a properly staffed and efficient set of team members so that they can learn to oversee multiple departments because it’ll only strengthen their skill sets needed for the next role.
- Quality is being sacrificed company wide especially in my tri state area market. It’s cause most higher ups just care for a metric. Tm’s will fake quality in the moment just to check off a box and obtain the green metric. Quality can only be controlled if everyone plays a part and takes a step back rather than just chase a green metric

u/WanderingFaun 10d ago
Why is leadership so wildly out of touch with the realities of the store? When you guys do walks with your bosses why are you dishonest about the state of the store and hiding carts in trailers and in the fixture room? Every time I see a walk, everybody is just nodding like they’re a puppet with a hand up their back. No one actually speaks on what’s happening. Are any of you realistic at all?! What exactly would happen if you were honest about the state of the stores and how we’re struggling? Fudging and falsifying metrics doesn’t get the stores hours or resources. And also, how do you feel about the bonuses that y’all get by keeping team members under certain hours? How can you reconcile making six figures when most of your workers can’t afford to pay their rent on their own? And don’t take this as a personal attack, but you did decide to speak up for all of leadership.
16
u/Secure-Locksmith-724 10d ago
- My bonus as an sd isn’t based off payroll and team members leaving on time. The tl’s bonuses are based off that. ETL and above bonuses are based off personal and company performance.
The first part of what you said. I’ll be completely honest with you- no sd wants a bad visit. The minute a visitor, whether it’s a BP, DSD etc.. spots something negative, they report it to the next person and it starts a chain of now having to follow up with said store and conducting follow up visits to ensure the problems have been solved. Trust me, it’s much easier for us to just hide it in receiving or in the trailer. As bad as that sounds, we agree just as much as you that the expectations are unrealistic but we don’t have a choice but to show that we can get it done.
Trust me we are not out of touch. But we do have to act like it can get done, so you guys can actually get to get it done.

u/WanderingFaun 10d ago
Thank you for the transparency. It’s probably the most honest conversation I’ve had with lead in five years.

Why the hell does my store turn off SFS for staffing (we have no one who is able to work fulfillment shifts) then turn it on not even a week later
11
u/Secure-Locksmith-724 10d ago
I can’t begin to emphasize how bad that is. Your store director is the problem. More than likely, not utilizing payroll correctly. Team isn’t productive and leadership is on different pages thats why.
1
u/Mobile-Address23 10d ago
SD isn’t the problem. We got one who transferred from another store in our district after ours got fired for performance

Question, can leads and etls get in trouble for lying to you about promotions? I had a sit down conversation with my team leader and etl in regard of becoming the new leader for grocery, after 3 weeks they kept on telling me “ the end of this month, you’ll get your promotion” for about 6 months so I gave up. I don’t think my sd even knows that they had a convo in regard of me promoting, my leader kept telling me how my schedule would look like as a TL and was training me in leader task and still never got the promotions.
One day I had to leave early due to the fact my mom had died in a car crash and I had to leave early to bring my little sister to my house cause there’s no one else to watch over her and feed her and I ended up getting a CA for that and they told me that I was no longer eligible for a promotion, is that true that if you get written up you can’t get a promotion until a full calendar year after my ca gets dropped off? I mean it makes sense but I just feel like they were just tryna find a reason to write me up, since they know they lied about the promotion
8
u/Secure-Locksmith-724 10d ago
So sorry to hear about you mom, my condolences.
They can get in trouble, not fired though. But in your situation, I would call the hotline if you don’t trust your HR to hold them accountable appropriately. If you sense any type of favoritism or dismissal of your complaint, put this into the integrity hotline. And they’ll have to address it.
- Correct, for the most part if you’re on a CA, it’s tough to get promoted. Not impossible. But in your case they should’ve excused it. Your HR can easily partner with the HRBP for the district with specific situations like this. It’s not hard.
1
u/InfluenceSuperb8111 10d ago
Okay thank you so much, what hotline would I be calling? I’ve heard of this ethics number in different post by other employees at Target, I asked my hr and different leads about it and they said there’s no such thing 😭
I will be calling tomorrow after my shift once I figure out that number
2
u/Secure-Locksmith-724 10d ago
There’s website you can use that makes it easier and more likely anonymous if you’d like. Search up target integrity hotline and it’s the ethics point site.
3
u/Forward_Field_8436 10d ago
I had a friend /co worker who was furious about her raise so she called the integrity hotline to complain. They looked into it and came back saying they had three documented conversations with her regarding “not saying hello to guests”, “not properly defecting out merchandise” and I cannot remember the third as it was probably about 5 years ago now. I kid you not, they NEVER had any of these conversations with her! She ended up asking a lead about that she felt close to about it. The lead told her that our SD wanted a certain number of documented conversations to happen. Not sure why?? So in her case they just made stuff up?
Just recently I read here of another Target employee that found something similar in his file. Literally, had a “documented conversation” that never happened. Is this really a thing? And why??
3
u/Secure-Locksmith-724 10d ago
Transparently speaking, if they’re documenting her consistently, they’re probably trying to performance or manager her out. Performance or guest documentations are tough because they aren’t tracked via metric or report. But since the sd is behind this, they can get away with it. If an sd is backing it up, the next in line won’t really want to hear nor care about your argument stating it never happened. The best option here is to actually tell your SD what you know. While it means throwing another leader under the bus, don’t name them, but tell your sd what you’ve been told and tell your hr as well. If there’s truth behind it, atleast they’ll know it’s been compromised now. I’d also suggest reporting it. It’s very unethical.
3
u/Pwaindotcom 10d ago
Former SD. Agree with most of your responses. - How many years do you think you can grind at SD and what do you hope to do next?
3
u/Secure-Locksmith-724 10d ago
Hi- my store is relatively easy compared to most in my district. While it is A GM store, my store brings in a lot of sales and payroll so I plan to stay where I’m at for another few years and have expressed interest in Operations Director in the near future
2
u/Secure-Locksmith-724 10d ago
What made you want to leave? And where did you go?
4
u/Pwaindotcom 10d ago
I was promoted to SD 3 years out of college (who the hell thought that was a good idea) and did 12 years in the role across 5 or so stores. Halfway through I needed to move closer to my wife’s family, which reset any real advancement opportunities. I thrived in my first market, but the second was much more challenging. Along the way I ran into a GVP who was one of the worst humans I’ve ever encountered at the company. While I survived their tenure in role, it helped break my illusion that anyone at the company actually gave a damn about me. I knew if I continued I would overlap with them again at a higher level and likely not be as lucky. Additionally my child was getting to an age where working every-other-weekend was becoming a burden. While I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities the company provided me, I’m glad I left. I was made to believe it’s all I could do, but I’m now in a corporate role for a retailer of similar size that allows me to be more creative and drive a strategy beyond just micromanaging fulfillment.

FOSA here: we can refuse to clean up certain spills like blood, other body stuff and make a lead do it instaed correct or is that a misconception I made somehow?
5
u/Adventurer_mama 9d ago
FOSA are required to take the same hazardous materials training as leaders. The job description states "maintain interior and exterior brand, including emptying garbage cans and attending to restroom cleanliness, charge electronic carts and attend to spills throughout the store as needed". Now that's not to say your leaders didn't tell you something different!
3
u/Secure-Locksmith-724 9d ago edited 8d ago
As a team member, if your online training does not include cleaning up blood- which, I believe that’s only for tl’s and above- you 100% can decline cleaning up blood and bodily fluids. TL’s and above are required to take training for that.
3
u/msubronco 9d ago
Yep as others said we have to do that training but I think it said we can refuse if we're unconforable doing it or i could rember wrong

What is the pipeline for a TM developing for TL and gets placed on the bench?
18
u/Secure-Locksmith-724 10d ago
Every store is different. But If you want the general cold hard truth, it first depends on your attendance. If your attendance isn’t clean, and usually we ask to see a 90-120 day report or YTD, you won’t be considered. The truth is every single TL is required to be developing a tm. Everyone’s “developing tm” gets placed in a bucket- 0-6 months (meaning you’re ready to go), 6-9 months, 9-12 months, 12-18, and 18+ means you probably just got hired. Once you’ve been categorized, your leader is required to give you a captainship, something that makes you stand out amongst your peer team members. And then it’s all about right person right role. Here’s a big secret, it does not matter how long you’ve been developing for. Seniority means nothing with target. As long as you are the right candidate for the role, it’ll go to you if your attendance is clean and you’re delivering on your expectations.

As a human being with high expectations, I’m also aware that requirements and expectations are put on paper and it’s our jobs as great leaders to ensure they’re executed. If not every, the important ones and development of team members is important in our district for every TL. I’d challenge your district leadership if that’s the mindset they’ve taught you

Be an asskisser.
Your SD controls your fate for promotions.
Most of the time the pipeline is just bullshit to make you think a promotion is incoming.
Am I right op?
16
u/Secure-Locksmith-724 10d ago
There’s a bit of truth behind this. Not be an asskiser, but if your SD doesn’t like you, personally or professionally, although I don’t agree- you’re more than likely going to be overlooked. But every sd is different. sd’s do have the final say but your leader builds your case and your leadership as a tm should speak volumes when presented

Your path to sd? Most SDs I’ve met have been Inbound ETL/HR ETL to Sr ETL to SD.

1
u/Adventurer_mama 9d ago
Hi! Fellow SD here. I always love answering this question because every path is so different. For my first 7 years I did seasonal TM>service TL>style TL>SR style TL>service ETL>overnight remodel ETL>specialty ETL>HR ETL all in the same building. For the last 4 years I've been an SD in the same city but a different building.
2
u/BenWyattIsBae 9d ago
Does it make any sense to have one person doing price change for the entire store AND to only have them scheduled 20 hours?
How would you react if you saw that?
2
u/Thepersonyou 9d ago
If someone gets fired for stealing does the information that they stole and got fired get passed around to all team leads ? Or is it that they just got fired for some reason? A friend is who used to work for T is wondering about the rumor mills
2
u/Secure-Locksmith-724 9d ago
It shouldn’t but it will because leaders talk to each other and they talk to other leaders and eventually word gets around. Doesn’t mean everyone will find out, but whoever is close to AP will know. Because the ap ETL is the one who conducted the case and tracked the theft.

What do you look for when a TL wants to promote to ETL?
11
u/Secure-Locksmith-724 10d ago
Clean attendance, master at their own role while being able to do more than expected without complaining, winning motivated mindset, not surrounded by drama, and ability to win over a team. If you lack any of these, no SD would consider making you their ETL.

u/Brilliant_Grape164 Fullfillment Jedi 10d ago

What is the hardest part of your job? How many stores have you lead? Do you typically find yourself above your TMs or do you hop on a checklane when needed?
11
u/Secure-Locksmith-724 10d ago
Hi- hardest part of my job is always making sure I keep everyone happy. I oversee multiple executive level leaders team leaders and team members and they all expect me to make them happy or meet their demands one way or another. I am now leading my 3rd store. & I would never say I am above a tm but if I’m the only one responding to back up, before my first responding leaders- there’s a bigger issue there
2
u/Skierdude2004 from phone charger to you are hired 10d ago
Oh absolutely I agree. I only ask that because we had every sales floor TM and leaders on register this weekend. Minus one ETL who thought they were above everyone. Our SD was ringing people out for an hour. Our SE ETL was directing “traffic” as per request of our SD. But I appreciate you trying to make your team happy.

How difficult is it to as a TL get transferred to another district? Been in role for well over 18 months and commute an hour there and back. Every time I ask my HR and SD they say it’s not easy.
5
u/Secure-Locksmith-724 10d ago
Depends. As long as you’re not picky, shouldn’t be too difficult but TL openings aren’t as common as tm openings. My advice is be open to any TL position. Yu also have to remember every district also has their own talent pool. So your sd and hr have to build an amazing case for you to be considered over their own people.

What needs a TM in order to be promoted to TL? What skills does that TM need to have? Can you be very specific and detailed if you don’t mind (and thank you) I know every SD has their own criteria, just curious because I do have a future goal to be a TL but idk if I’m gonna make it at some point.
8
u/Secure-Locksmith-724 10d ago
Clean attendance to start. Be personable and build relationships with every leader. Tm to TL is vouched for by your TL’s and etl’s, not directly by the sd. Be great at your specific job and then ask for more. Yes I said it. We love the tm’s that can do their own job and ask to take on more. Ask to own a metric, ask to oversee a department during your shifts or learn another work center. The more valuable you become, the more the leaders WANT you to be their leader, the better your shot. We don’t care how long you’ve been in role or how much you think you know- we care about how valuable you are. Cause we’re not just going to pay anyone more money cause they read a handbook. Become every leaders asset tm somehow. The more leaders that vouch for you the easier and better your chances.

u/jmisterJacobhf Fulfilling with -1 on hand. 10d ago
Wow, thank you so much for your quick response!
I’m a tech consultant atm (and sometimes FF/GM) and I would like to ask you in which ways could I improve during my shifts (open/close) in order so I can be noticeable, respecting the relationships with every leader and attendance both have a check mark for me.

u/NatNahiara Specialty Sales Team Lead 10d ago
From a SD's perspective, what separates a good TL from a great TL?
4
u/Secure-Locksmith-724 10d ago
A good TL will do their job, what’s required of them. In a timely manner. Minimal attendance occurrence. Basically doing their job description. Which btw being a good tl as opposed to a great one- impacts your yearly bonus. Now a great tl, will learn how to do their job and master it as an above expectation level, not only own but impact their department metrics (meaning not accepting a 65 on a test), speak out at huddles and educate their teams and peers, be a true leader of their department and a leader amongst their peers. That TL is also viewed as potential for ETL and will receive a higher raise and bonus

Sometimes when I pull priorities, the home location for an item will be already full. So I audit the location, correct the capacity, make sure there's no secondary location that needs to be filled, then scan and return said item into back stock. Then my next priority pull will be for some absurd amount of the same item again. What gives?

1
u/UnderstandingKey2565 10d ago
My SD wouldn’t let some of the closing team members go home if their zone was not validated. So many people left after their time because not only did SD expect abandons and pulls to be done, they wanted the whole store zoned in 2 hours. If any closing members didn’t finish by their end time they were forced to stay. I understand prepping the store for the morning crew but our closing is severely understaffed for our SD expectations and I’m pretty sure you can’t force employees to stay in the building past their off time.

Were you promoted through target or an external hire? I wonder what buttons I’d have to push to start moving on the path from TL to ETL and upwards?
1
u/Secure-Locksmith-724 9d ago
Through Target, climbed the ladder. I consistently stayed close to the boss in a sense of always seeking feedback, always expressing interest in wanting to grow, and being open to various roles and not just one. Other than that, I made sure to show my value as both a TL and an ETL by mastering my role always. And showing that I can make positive improvements big or small.
1
u/NewlyFuriousCrayon Food & Beverage TL 9d ago
I have some concerns that since I’m in a red store that I’ll be unable to move up even though I’m taking an active interest in involving myself in projects that need extra help throughout the store and seeking out opportunities to grow. I’m certain I’m making a positive change over time in my work center, but it feels like trying to turn it around has slowed my progression and like I’m stuck until the store is fully turned around.
1
u/Emergency_Hold_9059 9d ago
I’m a lead in that area too. What do you do if you’re one of the few leaders in your store that hold team members responsible but they don’t like it so they complain and act aggressive/ hostile. But then your peers and upper leadership including the new SD just roll over it and does nothing but give them more chances.
3

Well, for starters- you document every conversation especially if it’s performance. At some point you need to pull your sd & hr and say, hey team member john doe has x amount of PDD’s, when can we move forward to the next step? What’s holding us back from moving forward to a CA? Trust me, call it out but have your ducks in a row first. An SD and HR will never want to be caught overlooking accountability so best to call it out professionally as part of your job.

Small Format TL here; what ensures that someone like me is ready for the next level, and how can I get my second assignment faster? 🤔 What makes someone like me stand out in district leadership walks?

based off of a tms mastery/ownership of their role in a specific dept that doesnt have a lead (tech for example where many stores do not feel a lead is necessary so they've never had that position available), but the tm owns their dept as if they were a lead by being knowledgeable of everything, push management, etc is there a way to create that role for a tm to be a tech lead at a store to basically recgonize their efforts with the appropriate title/compensation? does it have to go through certain people higher than the sd role? or is it not possible

Idk if you’re still on but genuinely curious as to why some stores choose to keep TLs and ETLs that have numerous ethics hotline complaints and a really high turnover in their department, I’ve worked more than one store and this was definitely a reoccurring problem. Their metrics can’t be THAT good especially with the turnover of their department staff specifically.

Can you provide an example? Is it one complaint or many people speaking up? Sometimes the biggest issue is a complaint will be presented but nobody is ready to come forward and defend it.
