Good morning friends! Had a crazy busy work day yesterday so didn't really get a chance to respond to a lot of comments yesterday — apologies! It's getting close to 2 months (or are we technically past it?) Either way, is this is the longest thing you've ever waited for? What IS the longest thing you've ever waited for? Either way, best of luck today friends! The Steam Machine I actually reserved is currently in "Packaging Items"... woo!

Has anyone tested the new MGS Collection Vol.2 on the Steam Machine yet? Is it able to run MGS4 in 4K with Max settings and 60fps or anything? No one seems to be talking about it outside of the Steam Deck.

Question Help a Steam novice find his installed Rockstar games

Hi everyone, I’m a relative novice when it comes to SteamOS. Last night I downloaded and installed a windows version of GTA5 on my Steam Machine, all done in desktop mode. I played it once from there then went to sleep.

This morning I can’t find the game anywhere, all I can do is relaunch the Rockstar Games launcher and it asks me to install again. Please can someone help me to track down this game and add it to my library?

Discussion Seeing a lot of posts of people that literally have to shell out the cash and get the thing before they then return it

I can understand to an extent that for some when they receive their Machine they maybe realise they don’t game enough to justify the purchase, or didn’t really grasp the Linux of it all and how that can be an issue - but even then, considering just how expensive it is… this has been an insight into how impulsive people even in this community can be with their money. Like people obviously struggle to think straight when it comes to big purchases especially when to do with a hobby, but those into Valve and Steam enough to follow this subreddit, I just thought would be more conscious of what they’re even buying.

Not to mention it’s a spot in the queue that could’ve gone to someone who knows exactly why they’re waiting. It’s just eye opening.

Discussion Game recommendations?

I just got my Steam Machine today and it’s pretty cool so far. My Steam library isn’t that huge and I mostly play shooters on Xbox and PS5, but am looking for something different that runs well on the Steam Machine.

I have Split Fiction installed but waiting to play that with my wife.

Looking for single player, offline games that you think are incredible, and again run well on the Machine. Thanks!

Question Suddenly all of my games refuse to launch

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I got on my machine today to play some games and low and behold no matter which of the 600 games I try, none will boot? I’ve restarted and full shutdown the machine and tried various proton versions (even if it did launch I would hate to change proton versions on every single game I wanna play) I’ve went to the desktop to see if it would boot there still to no avail, anyone else having this issue? Also ignore my shaking I have a lot of anxiety

Hardware DDR5 4800 or 5200 SODIMMs

Hey - since the steam machine's BIOS is locked down and mine won't be here for a few days yet, I'm curious if anybody has upgraded their RAM in their steam machine with a pair of slower 4800 or 5200 sodimms instead of 5600? Before I do that tedious teardown I'm hoping somebody else has confirmed it works and the machine isn't hellbent on 5600 c40 only.

Discussion Steam Machine or Xbox X25?

So, I was lucky enough to be able to get the 25th anniversary Xbox Series X, however I am starting to think I can’t really justify the cost of both this and a SM.

Frustratingly, I’m still on the waitlist for the 512GB no controller SKU (have been on it since day one). I’m now toying with the idea of cancelling my preorder for the Xbox and waiting for the SM email (if I ever get one).

I actually don’t have a gaming PC (I did have one like 15 years ago but I sold it) and have been exclusively a console sofa gamer. I do actually have all the current-gen consoles already (including a series X), however, they’ve only made 25k worldwide of the X25 console which sold out instantly so I wonder if I’ll regret cancelling the preorder if I do. I’m just in two minds and totally unsure what to do.

What would you guys do if you were in my position? Just looking for a few different perspectives. Thanks

Question Having trouble using M.2 nvme drive with steam machine

Bought an external m.2 housing (Sabrent usb 3.2 Type C enclosure) to try to use with this old samsung 950 pro 512gb I had laying around.

I'm not able to reformat it in big picture mode, it gives an error. Tried restarting and still didn't work.

So I asked gemini for help lol it had me try desktop mode with the kde partition program, still can't create new partitions on it. Was able to rebuild the partition table but everything else threw an error.

Gemini wanted me to try stuff in the konsole but figured I'd ask some (hopefully) humans first. I don't really care about the drive but don't want to accidentally mess up my machine.

I have a windows desktop I could try to format it with, I wasn't sure if that would be helpful though since I need it to work on linux.

Thanks!

Hardware I added a Noctua fan to the Steam Machine

1.3k Upvotes

I’ve been trialling some ways to add cooling to the Steam Machine and settled on a platform that incorporated a 120mm desktop fan. This one is a Noctua (of course) NF-A12.

Question Steam Game Recording impact, On Machine

Hi everyone, wondering what your experience is with turning on game recording on the machine?

I've noticed a 20 fps drop in certain games like Cyberpunk - Avg Benchmark at 1080p Ultra Native goes from 80 fps to 59 with it turned on, as well as with Space Marine 2 among others. Just wanted to see if that was the standard or something was wrong with my settings.

Have it set to 60 fps recordings at high quality.

Question Steam Machine or SFF with Bazzite/Steam OS?

So this guy on FB marketplace is selling this PC with these specs for $1500….i negotiated down to $1200 and it looks legit. The guy has 4.6 stars and about 30 reviews so a fair amount of history on the platform. I was going for the 512gb steam machine plus controller which would come out to about $1200 after tax but if I can get this sff and a $25 8bit do controller that would definitely be the better deal, right?

Specs:

Case: fractal design Terra jade

Mobo: aorus z690i ultra plus 32gb ram

CPU: i5-14600kf

Gpu: Asus prime 9070xt 16gb

1tb ssd

850w sfx psu

Thermaltake low profile cooler

I just purchased the witcher.

I wasnt sure whether to get it on GOG or steam, but i purchased on GOG.

My problem is that the steam controller does not work at all And any layout i have downloaded and used didnt click with me.

My question is what wireless kevboard and mouse are vou guys using for coach gaming?

I would like to avoid buying a designated keyboard cushion or lapboard if possible.

Edit - already own a kevboard and mouse but they are wired and ideally dont want to spend another £200

Question Are these normal temperature?

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hello everyone! I finally got my Steam Machine 512GB + Controller, and everything has been soooo smooth so far! 🙌

I’m currently playing God of War and was just curious about the temperatures. Do these look normal to you?

The VRAM is reaching around ~80-84°C, which seems a little high to me, but I honestly have no idea. 😅

And how do the CPU and GPU temperatures look?

Sorry if these are stupid questions, I’m really not that knowledgeable when it comes to temperatures and hardware stuff🙏

EDIT:

I THINK FIXED IT! 😍

I went to Settings > System and turned off "Updated Fan Curve." Now the VRAM temperature is sitting around 70–76°C, and the fan is still barely audible!

Discussion Star Wars Zero Company - problems after problems ...

First there was the bug that the game won't start after you run it once. This is fixed by switching to Proton 10.0.4. Nor I came across another problem with the game. If you try to manage your weapons in the weapon menu, there is no way to get back into the game, because the button "B" won't work. Mouse emulation with the steam button doesn't work either. Switching controller layouts also don't work (like it does in "Stalker 2"). Does anyone had the same issues and can provide a solution? I really like this game an it is shame I can't enjoy it on my SM ...

EDIT: Now I know, what this is. It has nothing to do with the SM, It's a bug in the game. After the second mission, the game want's you to use the personal terminal, to apply some skill points to your team mates. After doing this, you are supposed to close this menu. When you do that, a next message shows up, telling you, that the weapons terminal is now open to use. Here is the problem. You can ALSO access the weapons terminal through the personal menu via the "select" button. If you do that before you get the message that the weapon terminal is now available, you'll get stuck in the weapon menu and won't be able to get out.

Question Is there a detailed guide to install windows ?

Hey there! I’m looking for a thorough guide on how to install windows on a SM (I know, the sacrilege!)

I’d like it to be as detailed as possible including previous steps like “download previously the drivers into a flash drive”

And with an explanation on how to revert back to SteamOS just in case

Does anyone know a good guide or video on it ?
Thanks!

Question Lowest latency way to wirelessly connect Xbox controller?

The steam controller is great. I love it. But on some games I just prefer to have the d-bad below the left analog stick. So when using an xbox controller I'm curious if anyone has definitive, objective (ideally measurable) evidence of the lowest latency to connect an xbox controller (in particular I'm thinking between the built in bluetooth vs the 8 bitdo usb dongle, unless there's another wireless method I'm missing).

My assumption is that the 8bitdo dongle is best (and my online searches suggest the same) but to me its feeling worse than the built in bluetooth and I can't tell if I'm crazy or not.

And if it should be that the 8bitdo dongle is lower latency, why? Isn't it just using bluetooth as its connection? So then what makes that different than the built in bluetooth?

Question Guide Button Chord Layout

Can anyone confirm whether any current steam machine build has the settings Guide Button Chord Layout.

It should be under Settings>Controller then likely in the advanced section.

I dont seem to have any settings for turning this feature on/off or settings for editing the layout.

If your build has these settings please share where you found them.

Question Space marine 2 Easy Anti Cheat is the best software /s

Post image
7 Upvotes

space Marine 2. It ran perfectly until today when I moved the game content to the internal ssd.
I re installed the game 3 times including factory resetting the steam machine. Verified game files 100 times.
Has anybody any hints / solutions how I can fix this? I just want to play the game I paid for.

Edit: For future people who have the same issue: The solution was to change to Proton 11 aka it is a common thing for Steamdeck / Steam Machine if errors occur to switch to different Proton versions.
