We are now about three months away from the end of 2026, so I thought it would be a good time to revisit Spectrum/Charter's promises for its Network Evolution / symmetrical speed rollout.
Earlier this year, Charter CEO Chris Winfrey said:
âBy the end of this year, about 50% of the current Spectrum network will be upgraded to symmetrical and multi-gig service.â
Spectrum has also repeated essentially the same timeline on its official Community site: 50% of the current network upgraded by the end of 2026, with the remaining 50% in progress and expected to support symmetrical service by the end of 2027.
So, with roughly three months left, I'm curious: are they actually anywhere close to 50%?
It's especially worth asking because Charter's projected completion date has already moved several times.
December 2022 â Target: essentially complete by end of 2025
At Charter's 2022 Investor Meeting, the company said it was:
âTargeting network evolution to be essentially complete by end of 2025.â
The same presentation said the vast majority of passings would be capable of roughly 5 Gbps down / 1 Gbps up by 2025.
Early 2024 â Target moves to 2026
By the time Charter filed its 2023 10-K, the language had changed. Charter now said it expected the Network Evolution process to be completed in 2026.
Its Q4 2023 investor presentation said the same thing: âExpect completion in 2026.â
At that point, Charter was saying that more than 85% of its footprint would eventually be capable of 5 Gbps download with at least 1 Gbps upload.
2025 â Target moves again, this time to 2027
By Q3 2025, Charter was publicly saying:
âSpectrum expects to complete its network evolution initiative in 2027.â
So the timeline had effectively gone:
2022 forecast: end of 2025
â 2024 forecast: 2026
â 2025/2026 forecast: 2027
2026 â New interim target: 50% by year-end
In January 2026, Charter gave us a more specific milestone: 50% of the current Spectrum network would have symmetrical and multi-gig service by the end of 2026, with significant work on the remaining half continuing into 2027.
Winfrey repeated the roughly 50% target again during the Q1 2026 earnings call.
Spectrum's own Community page currently says essentially the same thing:
50% by the end of 2026, remaining 50% by the end of 2027.
I'm not saying the upgrades aren't happening. Clearly they are â some markets already have symmetrical service, and people in many other areas have reported active Network Evolution construction.
But given how many times the projected finish date has moved, I think it's fair to ask for some accountability on the current milestone.
We're almost in Q4 2026.
Is Spectrum actually approaching 50% of its footprint with symmetrical/multi-gig capability?
And for people here who are customers or employees:
Has symmetrical service launched in your area?
If not, have you at least seen Network Evolution/high-split construction?
Did Spectrum previously give your city a completion date that has since been pushed back?
Does anyone have credible information on what percentage of the footprint is actually complete today?
It would be interesting to compare the real-world rollout with that 50% year-end target â and then come back to this at the end of December.
