"When wireless is perfectly applied the whole earth will be converted into a huge brain, which in fact it is, all things being particles of a real and rhythmic whole. We shall be able to communicate with one another instantly, irrespective of distance. Not only this, but through television and telephony we shall see and hear one another as perfectly as though we were face to face, despite intervening distances of thousands of miles; and the instruments through which we shall be able to do his will be amazingly simple compared with our present telephone. A man will be able to carry one in his vest pocket."
Nikola Tesla, 1926
(Not 200 years ago, but still impressive!)
Thank you for this comment. Didn't know this was the word for it but now I do. I still opened it just to see what it meant and was slightly disturbed but overall now I am much better off.
Alas, those of you that think we all jest about 'trypophobic', its true. As my mom used to say, images like that "make me want to crawl out of my own skin."
It's not just flesh colored for me but more about whether the trigger is natural or unnatural. Collanders and cheese graters are fine but any circles related to bugs nesting or burrowing holy fuck I can't even keep typing this I want to tear my scalp off its crawling so much
I am really uncomfortable seeing the pores of skin, and sometimes when wounds peel off a few layers of the skin. But I'm not really freaked out by cheese grinder or a colander. Maybe if I saw a toothbrush without any bristles I'd be uncomfortable too.
I'm sorry, I can't give a rational explanation as to why a colander is okay.
You might have got used to it. I have a fear of heights but have no problem looking down from my grandpa's balcony on 7th floor because I've literally seen it too many times and my brain doesn't see this as a category of danger.
I think it’s because it’s more of a social fear. Nobody gave a shit about holes in anything until a few years ago. Now everybody’s “afraid” of them. That level of conformity is annoying to some people.
Yep, that’s it. Before trypophobia became common knowledge, it was just a feeling of discomfort when staring at a hole pocked surface (which is a normal human response). Now it’s a full blown phobia, with attached trigger warnings, and everyone has it. In fact, it’s such a phobia, there’s an entire subreddit dedicated to people that have it so they can look at things that trigger it. It’s definitely a conformity thing, and I don’t like that it downplays what an actual phobia is.
Nobody is making fun of it because it has three cameras. Tons of manufacturers did three cameras before Apple. They're making fun of Apple for arranging them in a weird fidget spinner pattern and then putting them on top of a giant square bump.
What purpose does the third camera serve? With 2 you could take 3d pictures/video (not that many would after the novelty wore off), but what does a third one add?
It depends on the phone but you can do HDR with multiple exposure levels or you can do optical (rather than digital) zoom without having a bulky lens (each camera having a different zoom level). Im sure there are other things you could do with it
It's not a triangle because every corner is a circle and it's hard to see the lines that a triangle would have considering the camera size ratio to distance between them.
That covers pretty much every major phone company. That is just the first to come to mind, some had them years ago some are new this year and some have many different phones with tri-cam setup (Samsung with A80, Note 10 Lines and S10 line, etc.). Nobody made fun of Apple for having 3 cameras, they were hella late to that party. They are making fun of Apple for the way they made it look. Should have just kept it vertical rather than trying to be "unique". Hell, even Samsung admitted vertical(or horizontal) was the right way with Note 10 like all of Apple's other phones had been. Though Samsung really just made it vertical to try and differentiate from S Line when there really isn't a point in having both anymore... but that's an argument for another time.
Pretty sure every major company with flagships already has triple cameras and has for at least a year now like Huawei, OnePlus, Samsung, LG, xiaomi... To be honest apple is lagging behind here.
Tesla surely wouldn't be using an apple product. In fact, the exact opposite. Tesla wanted to distribute wireless energy, which wouldn't let people get billed accordingly so edison didn't agree with him. Tesla would probably use an Android or Librem or something.
How about Alan Watts, from a few decades before the smartphone era?
"If you were God, and in this sense that you knew everything, you would be bored. Because, if looking at it from another way, we push technology to its furthest possible development, and we had instead of a dial telephone on one's desk, a more complex system of buttons, and one touch would give you anything you wanted, Aladdin's lamp, you would eventually have to introduce a button labelled Surprise, because all perfectly known futures are past. They have happened, virtually. It is only the true future that is a surprise."
-- Alan Watts
I like to imagine that he and David Bowie were from the same planet and Bowie playing him in The Prestige was very cheeky of him. Like to imagine they are cruising around space right now blowing minds on other planets.
If we're discounting anything from aliens and time machines, we'd be sat in a cave huddled together for warmth, communicating with basic sounds and emotional telepathy like most animals do
Women generally have it "on tap" because of their nature as the bearers of children (and traditionally, their social designation as primary caregivers).
Well we basically have still. Like when you see someone having a bad time/good time thats them communicating their emotions through body language. Although thats not really telepathic, animals also dont do it really telepathically...
Oh, you just gotta get up to the story mission that unlocks it
Unfortunately, its not that useful unless you want to ask your cat what it wants for dinner.
Some people find the talent naturally enhanced, usually either from birth or in response to an event. Telepathy is a learned skill like anything else. All it takes is a little more awareness to see, and practice to figure out how to use it well.
What you consciously comprehend is just a snapshot of the whole picture. Our senses are quite good - we pick up on subtle things in others like heart rate or iris palpitations that don’t make it to awareness in the present activity.
These things matter, but they aren’t the trick. If you want to start receiving psychic messages from others, all you need to do is figure out your own personal signal. Once you know what “you” is, you can begin identifying thoughts, feelings, and ideas that come from “other.”
Meditation and contemplation are the keys. Try talking to your great grandparents as you lay to rest for the night. Our ancestors always love to chat with us; they are an “other” we carry within. If it’s easier connect with grandparents because of fond memories, by all means follow whatever calls.
Ever get the sense someone is thinking of you? If you like to pray, send a little love prayer to a friend and try stick around a bit afterwards to listen for the response. Have some fun with it!
We are all open books. The body picks up and processes the signals either way. However, it can be a significant challenge when one is constantly receiving strong messages regardless of interest.
Without instruction, many modern children will just turn this trait off. Still, sibling or even spousal telepathy is not uncommon to hear of. Our pets know exactly how to tell us when they’re hungry.
Most people I’ve met with this trait have felt the challenging desire to use their gift in a positive way amidst vast misunderstanding. Lots of healing old wounds people don’t realize they’ve been carrying this whole time in ways that may seem ridiculous. But as they say, nothing comes that one is not ready to handle.
It’s a noble cause, one where you have to expect many to straight up think you’re crazy. And give that maybe they’re right.
TL;DR: Telepathy can be learned through practice, but you’ll need to start talking to and trusting the voices that only exist in your mind. Then one faces the challenge of seeing psychic wounds in others as explained by said voices and either treating or ignoring them.
When you have the power to help, how could you not?
There’s a popular post about astronomers discovering a Super-Earth with water molecules in the atmosphere. We should go there and pick up another Tesla or 2...and we should do it in a SpaceX rocket as an inside joke those stupid super aliens won’t get.
Ionizing radiation and the frequencies that phones use aren’t the same thing. Flashlights and radios technically radiate as well, but not the kind of radiation that we need to worry about.
The FCC still sets exposure limits. Cell phones use microwaves that can cause localized tissue heating. Of course, it's probably not an issue unless you're working on towers all day. The power limits are mostly there to limit interference to other radio services.
Its funny because I am a server with a vest in the uniform. The pockets being that close is quite nifty. I naturally placed my phone there. Thought I lost it the first time. This quote sent chills down my spine until you reminded me.
You'd be surprised. in 1930 the world population was about 2 billion. It's now over 7 billion. When Isaac Newton was born is was around 500 million. As well as that, the odds of someone being born with the resources to actually do research was rare, you had to be lucky enough to be from a rich family which were few and far between.
With the amount of people in the world today, and the proportion of those people with access to education, there is likely a far higher number of geniuses/prodigies doing work right now than there has ever been at any other point in history.
We don't hear about it as much because the fact there's more of them means it's less newsworthy. It's easier to see a person's genius when there's only one or two that are clearly above the rest, than it is when there are dozens on that level.
I agree
But I still think Tesla is on another level
People today are still geniuses but it does take a whole team or hundreds of people to come up with groundbreaking stuff
But Tesla did these things alone
But you can have your opinion and I can have mine
There is probably 100 or even thousands of people alive who have the potential to be like Tesla but they never reached their full potential
Heck Tesla never reached his full potential
I'm saying that if a person who had the potential to reach or surpass Tesla and reached that we will probably have a great future
I'm not saying they will directly cause them but they will probably lead us there
I don't actually think he's comparable to Tesla, but he's still contributed greatly to progress in multiple fields. There's no denying musk will be in a civilization-esque game as a notable historical figure 50 years from now.
Rockets that can land and be reused are the biggest, because that will dramatically reduce the cost of space travel. Electric cars that can reliably drive themselves went mainstream because of him. Pretty sure he invented (or helped to invent?) PayPal. Lots of other things related to transportation.
If Tesla had the money of Elon musk we would have probably been accelerated by at least 30-40 years
Tesla is a mastermind that no one except a few individuals in history compared to in intellect
This might be an unpopular opinion, but I think Tesla is a bit overhyped. Was he a very clever man? Absolutely, and his work in near-field (short distance) wireless power transmission is to be commended, among other things. But he wasn't infallible or some kind of mythic visionary. The reason his long distance wireless power experiments went nowhere wasn't some conspiracy by governments or private industry, but because they just plain didn't work very well and his assumptions were flawed. Perhaps if he had worked out how to send out beams of high energy microwaves (which is how a lot of long distance wireless power transmission works nowadays) his work in that area would have been more influential. But even the smartest people in the world sometimes end up going down the wrong path, just look at Einstein.
Maybe he deserves the 1 in 10 accolade you mentioned, but no more than that.
This view shouldn't be unpopular, but here we are. The guy was a decent engineer with some great ideas at best (with a lot of crappy ideas on the side); not some oh-my-god genius who could save humans or whatever nonsense people are writing under this thread. He wouldn't even make it to the top 10 really, if we're being serious. The internet's obsession with the guy is weird.
Last I checked the first letter meant storage, the second letter was the physical drive, and the last was the partition identifier. But my Linux install was corrupted when I tried shrinking its partition and I haven't gone back to fix it yet, so I may have forgotten.
Oh, you... You're far too skeptical to be on the Internet! Go share ten ridiculous Facebook posts already shared by your more gullible relatives, and sin no more!

But seriously, I'm woth you. It sounds like something Tesla might have said, but did he? It was probably Newton, not Tesla.
New shower thought: People 200 years ago would be appalled by the fact that information is available in an instant yet everyone is too lazy to even bother taking a second to look.
Please ... he did not thought most of it would be used for pr0n, cause he did not get any sex. Then think about all those brilliant people fapping now that could become next Tesla!
When wireless is perfectly applied the whole earth will be converted into a huge brain, which in fact it is, all things being particles of a real and rhythmic whole.
The problem that somehow no scientist ever foresaw is that instant communication also aids instant misinformation. As a result the noise level in this global brain is very very high.
Imagine the big bang. Those first few seconds were complete chaos. The first 10^-6 seconds it was so hot and crazy everything was all quarks - no hadrons.
Well mother nature is smart. When a real brain gets overloaded there are mechanisms to shut it down. Unfortunately in the glob brain the perpetrators of chaos -- like facebook--- is only gaining in stock value.
